The stock market de veloped an Impressive show of strength durlns the latter part of today. The principal Infiu ence In the rise was a resumption In the up ward movement in Pennsylvania and Balti more & Ohio stock. The recent reaction In these stocks has been accompanied by rumors that important speculative Interests which had been prominent In the advance had sold out nd taken their profits. The news of the very heavy outlays in prospect for permanent bet terment and increased shipments awakened some apprehension of dividend Increases belns Indefinitely postponed, not only on Pennsyl vania stock, but also on Baltimore & Ohio and many others which have been subject to ru mors of Increased dividends, but today the re port of a probable Increase In the Pennsylvania dividend rate took form again, and was circu lated with great explldtness. Bids were made on the board for the next semiannual dividend on Pennsylvania on thou sands of shares of stock of 2?i per cent, com pared with 24 per cent, the last rate. The meeting of the directors for the purpose of fixing the dividend rate is fixed for Tuesday next. These reports In regard to Pennsylvania had the most Indirect Influence In Baltimore & Ohio stocks next to Pennsylvania Itself, hut the whole railroad list responded In varying de grees to the influence of this movement. These pools, whose operations for a rise were Inter rupted by the Steel & Wire episode, resumed thlv nnntlnnl trt snm fnf Tt.1. .-. notably true of the Gould Southwestern group, I FINANCIAL NEWS 4 which are subjects of teeming rumors of pros pective combinations or consolidations. The determined firmness of 8ugar and its buoyant up-turn had a sympathetic effect on the market. The movement is still attributed to the demand from shorts, but the many as sertions of favorable developments In the trade war may have had their effect. A number of unusually favorable railroad statements also had a strengthening effect on the market. In creases In net earnings for March were re ported by the Atchison. Topcka & Santa Fe of 53 per cent; by the Hocking Valley Railroad of 103 per cent, and by the Central ot Georgia 30 per cent. Returns of gross earnings for the third week In April were also uniformly favorable. These factors of strength caused growing uneasiness among the rather unwieldy short interest, and the demand from that element had no small part In the rally In the market. The un steadiness of the sterling exchange market to day gave ground for renewed doubt as to the continuance for the present of the gold-export movement. The strong return of tho Bank ot England for the week, as well as that of the Imperial Bank of Germany, had some effect on the exchange market. The Subtreasury"s debit balance at the clearing house showed a further decline today, falling to $300,130. com pared with the recent average of over $1,000,000. If this replenishment of the money market Is cut off. It may serve to prevent the outward Sow of gold. The bond market showed Increasing activity and strength today. Total sales. $2,280,000. United States bonds were unchanged In bid quotations. BONOS. H- g-i ref. Htttf'D. & R. O. 4 90't U. S7"2s, tZT. lOiGen. Electric 3s... 120, do 3s, reg lObN. Y. April 28. The Commercial Ad vertiser's London financial cablegram says: The markets here were quiet today, but there was more Investment business. The bank re turn caused a firmer tone, although the close was rather unsettled. Consols were fraction ally .harder, and the war loan touched 1 1-3 premium on strong buying, finishing at 1 3-1C. Americans were Inactive but cheerful, being mode hard here, despite the absence ot Conti nental support. New Tork responded, and tho close was near the top. The features were Bal timore & Ohio and Wabash bonds, the latter on New York Inquiry. Corpers were again wanted at a quarter rise on bear closing. The bank lost 70.000 gold to South America, and bought 30.000 In German coin. The fall la sterling exchange reduced the telk of Amer ican exports, but It Is reported that gold Is going out soon from London to Parts. Call money was firm at unchanged rates, and bills were harder and fewer were offering. The bank renencd tho few sums due. and also lent slightly, besides doing a moderate business In discounts. The bank return shows a rise ot $2 500.000 In public deposits, merely represent ing bankers holding back funds for the end of the month and the war loan call of 10 per cent on Thursday. PORTLAND, April 26.-To the Editor.) in theso days -when the dally press Is continually publishing editorials and com munications concerning manufactories that Portland requires to Increase lu prosperity, tho writer would like to call attention to a fact largely overlooked namely, that capital will Invest itself in that line, not because It is a good thing for Portland, nor because it Is offered a bonus to do business in some particular locality, but because It will pay. and in order that it should pay it must have the practical support of the people hero; that Is, all things being equal, they must buy ar.d Insist on dealers offering those goods which are mado here. At the present tlmo there exists quite a feeling of Indiffer ence on the part of some, and a direct pre judice on the part of others in reference to where goods are made. Any goods bearing an Eastern trademark are bought without question. Goods made here are looked at doubtfully, or rejected with out examination. Manufacturers of goods here will bear out this assertion. In today's Issue of the Oregonian will bo found two advertisements of a certain kind of goods for men's wear. One "ad" states that the goods are made by Portland women, the other ofrers the samo kind of goods, but of Eastern make. How many men have the welfare of the city or its working people enc;igh at heart to examine the goods offered at both place and then buy the Portland goods if equal to the other? Every dollar paid out In Portland In wages benefits all pf the community. If paid out for Eastern made goods It is ot scarcely moro benefit to Portland people Steamship Co. than If paid tor goods manufactured out of the United States. When Portland people learn to be loyal to their own manufactories It will not be necessary -for tho Manufacturers' -Association and similar bodies of men to ad vertise for Eastern capital end Eastern men to establish themselves here. They -will come without asking. Ii. J. TEE RUNNING RACES. Yesterday's Winners at Coast and Eastern Tracks. SAN FRANCISCO. April 26. The weath er was lino at Oakland, and tho track fast.
