It .COMMERCIAL AND The business world was not moving very briskly in Portland yesterday, but the traffic on the whole wa sabout up to the usual Monday proportions. The changes In prices were few and of no great Importance, except in wheat.' which continues to gravitate to a lower level. There Is more of a demand for good potatoes, and eggs are slightly higher on an Improved demand for cold-storage purposes. Sales were generally made at 13c Dutter continues weak, and it Is too early In the week for the poultry market to shape Itself. llanlc Clearing. Exchanges. Balances. The European markets were, also In bad shape, and In the local, market matters hae not been worse till season. Nearly all of the exporters were out of the market, and the few who ventured a quotation did not care to go much above S2c for Walla Walla, and about the same for Val ley, although It Is posilble that Walla Walla might have been worked a shade higher. Saturdaj-"s break In prices of stocks brought large selling orders Into the market, and they were In evidence all through the list at the opening. But tnerc was also buying orders on a ery large scalo to take the offered stock. Part of these were evidently placed In the market by friends o different stocks for the purpose of supporting them. The expectation was quite general that the market would open with something like a crash In a!ues. but. as Is cot unusual In Wall street, overexpectatlon defeated Itself, and there wre enough buyers waiting to take ad vantage of the crash to steady the market almost Immediately. Professional Wall street perceived the ab sence of pressure of long stock in the steel Industry, with the lack of surprise. Evident ly the opportunity had been seized to dispose of long stocks at the higher sevel of prices, and the shorts were the most eager operator! In the market In the endeavor to cover. This pretty clearly Indicated a pause In the most aggressive tactics of the bear campaign. A collateral object of that campaign Is generally believed to be to take on various stacks at th lower level of prices. The pressure of liquida tion continued heavy during the first hour, and a second drive was made by the bears at the end of that time. But the steady absorption of offerings begot a very cautious mood among the professionals, and a decidedly quieter tone ensned In the market. Some of. the bull pools, which have recently been active, notably that In Missouri PacfUc, FINANCIAL NEWS showed a disposition to resume operations. Th undertono of the market was firm during the latter part of the day, and at the close wal strong, and rather act lie with the steel Indus trials at the best level of the day, at a con siderable net gain, amounting to 2 In th case of Federal Steel, and 2J4 In Steel & Ire. Wall street still keeps an anxious eye on thi situation In the Iron and steel trade; but l Inclined to go back of official utterances In forming Its opinion. The alarm first created ocr the cut In prices Is somewhat mltlJAUl by the well-dlled ranks of the consumers, who are thought to be watting to place contracts at a lower level of prices. Last year's high prices are known to have been made by bclatd bidders, who had to buy at any price to rX contracts, and the dealings at the high letcl were for only a small part of the total prodjet. A large part of last year's business ws on M contracts, which were known to have been worked oCC at lower rates. While the reduction in current rates has proved a severe shock to the financial world, and a great disappointment to holders of the stocks of the steel companies. Wall street li beginning to Indulge the hope that at cut prices the year's average rate may still prove to be above the average for last ear. Gold exports are looked forward to without alarm on account of the ease of the money market. Today's small shipment to Buenos Ayres was without Influence. There was a whole bunch of bearish considerations presented for view in the wheat pit at the beginning of trade. -Cables were easy, world's shipments heavy, there was an Increase on passage, and the weather continued favorable. It waa said that there would be considerable liquidation of n'av thu v.hu hut it did not materialize early. The market was fairly firm for a couple of hours after the Initial concession of about Ma Later the stuff began to come out, and then, waa selling In sympathy with tho break In corn. May had hesitated early, balking at the G3c mark, but the liquidation carried the price through that. The market was very 'weak at this time, but the selling pated the way for reaction, which began during the afternoon. The short so lien concluded not to remain In that condition over night, and bought back some of their early sales, and turned what looked Uko a bull rout Into a retreat In good order. The cash busi ness was slack, and the export inquiry rath't discouraging to holders. Trade was dull In spots, but the session fcrnlshed considerable animation most of the time. The Times' London financial correspondent says: The British money market Is In the state known to scientists as unstable equilibrium. The bill brokers have reconciled themselves to the Inevitable, and no longer seriously attempt to depress rates, for they have lost money by their recent efforts In that direction. The Bant of England holds the market In Its grip. The bank continues to charge 5 per cent for short advances, and means to make no departure for the present from this rule. The stock markets are decidedly uncomfort able over the prospect of paying 5 per cent for an Indefinite time ahead, with the probability of i further advance before greater ease re turns. Many temporary holders of the war loan paid from 5H to 514 per cent In the we, k ending April 14 for money to carry their bar gains into May. 'Where dear money presses hardest is upon good securities, and day aftur day these keep dwindling in price. Operators In America have exhibited splendid energy and resources in raising a great market demonstration In favor of your railroad shares, but no progress has been made In drawing on the British public to follow for more 'than a few days at a time. And were the market fa vorable, such episodes as the break In steel and wire stocks, with tho. accompaniment of what at this distance seems Inside manipula tion In favor of the bears, checks any desire to join the playing. Britishers believe Ameri can railroad stocks are jlestlned to see consld ttably higher figures In the coming Summer. SAN FRANCISCO 31AHKETS. SAN FRANCISCO. April 23.
