XEW YOniC STOCK MARKET.
Uncertainty Tleennllnp: Iron and
Steel Still a Depressing Factor.
NEW TORK. April 20.-The stock market
continued unsettled and hesitating today, unuer
the Influence of the uncertainty surrounding
the Iron and steel Issues. The undertone was
distinctly firm, and the early portion of weaa
cess gave way to a slow and Irregular upward
movement, doubtless due In large part to the
demand from the short Interest to cover. The
rates for loans on stocks this morning on the
floor Indicated that the short Interest was quite
large. Tho comparative Interest of Iron and
steel stocks and the positive strength at a num
ber of points prompted the covering of shorts
and encouraged what slight buying for general
account there w-as. Eager attention was fixed
tipoi American Steel & Wire all day. In view
of the session of the company's executive com
mittee. The movement of the stock was fever
ish, and common and preferred often moved
in contrary directions, -as though to cause, a
feeling of uncertainty over developments In the
company. Aside from this contusing manipu
lation, dealings In the stock were apparently
largely In the hands of the room traders, who
circulated many rumors concerning the execu
tive committee. The action was kept secret
until after the close of the market.
With this disturbing factor kept In the back
ground, a number of favorable lnnuences were
allowed to have play. The coalers were all
.notably strong on favorable trade reports, the
soft-coal, as well as tho aathradto roads, shar

ing In the movement. The local traction stocks
and Sugar moved upwad In a decidedly ir
regular manner, and Texas & Pacific. Canada
Southern, New York Central and Pennsylvania
were also points of strength. The good crop
weather was a. sustaining Influence with the
grain-carrying roads. Rumors still continue to
circulate of new railroad combinations and of
prospects of dividends on railroad stocks, but
they have no definite authority. The banks
seem assured of an Increase In cash tomorrow,
having gained nearly $4,000,000 on Subtreasury
operations and over $500,000 on the express
movement with the Interior.
There Is rather more mystery than usual sur
rounding the Item of loans. The liquidation
Indicates loan contraction, but the declining
scale of Interest rates has prompted the banks
to place as large loans as possible. Th
process of loaning on sterling collateral, which
has proceeded during the week, will undoubt
edly be reflected In the statement, aa It bss
been in the sterling market during the week.
Actual sterling rates advanced 54c, and posted
rates 5rC today, and are near the gold-export
point, though the experts are engaged In their
usual wrangle as to Just what figure repre
sents that point. Call money loaned aa low
as 2 per cent today.
The bond market was leu active today, and
prices were well. held. Total sales, $1,830,000.
United States 5 declined 54 per cent In the
bid price.

CHICAGO, April 20. Wheat traders climbed
Into the pit at the otwnlng of the cession
with their views concerning the value of
wheat lowered from 5e to 54c This was dus
to the tact that Argentina last week shipped
3.T50.000 bushels, that cables were lower, snd
the weather conditions remained the fast friend
of the crop. Having given this exhibition of
being awake, the speculative trade proceeded
to slumber. Nesrly the whole session the fluc
tuations were very narrow. The cash busi
ness was fair 150,000 bushels here for direct
export. New York put the expert drrasnd at
30 loads, and Philadelphia reported 35 loads.
This had a steadying Influence, which held
to the end.
The rpread between May and July widened
to 154c. and there wis considerable changing.
The crowd sold May and took July, while ele
vators In a moderate way reversed the action.
May opened 543540 lower at C55i3C55Jc to 05c,
advanced to 03543C3c and clowd Vie down
at, C554c. July began the session e lower at
O0S8CC54C to CCJic touched CCc and cloeea
a shade down at 66c
In corn the market largely belonged to the
scalpers. Trade was quiet and narrow. The
opening was from 54c to 54e under yesterday's
closing figures, but the clow showed a part of
this recovered. May closed lie down. July.
HtrViC depressed.
The provision market was weak and lower,
affected by weaker holdings, the lower grain
market and liquidation. Outride selling was a
feature. Jlay pork closed 10c down. July
closed 15c lower. May lard dosed 1254c down.
July '1254315c lower. May ribs. 1031254:

Oats were weak, a matter of sympathy with
corn and wheat. May closed He lower, July
