SEW YORK STOCK MARKET. tndJns Holiday Cansrs a Close of Speculative Contracts. NEW YORK. April 12. The fact that today's adjournment of the Stock Exchange was to be until next Monday, and that of tho London 'exchange until next Tuesday, prompted the closing up of speculative contracts today. Traa ers are averse to keeping open contracts fot o long a period, at any time, and at this time especially they have In mind the varying pos sibility of the. war In South Africa, the war In the sugar trade, the showing to be made by tho weekly bank statement on Saturday, and the possibility of gold export by Saturday- steamers. As realizing has been going on to a largo extent this week, most of the uncov ered contracts were on the short side, and tho demand to cover was an- Important factor In rallying prices. In addition, the pools which exist In a number or stocks adopted aggres sive tactics for an advance, taking advantage of the disinclination of the bears to extend their commitments on the eve of the holiday After the demand from the shorts had been satisfied, the pool manipulators began to find themselves alone In the bidding for stocks, with a steady burden of realizing sales when prices reached the higher level. The process of bidding up prices was discontinued, and the market lapsed Into comparative dullness and sluggishness.' The Industrials moved quite Independently of the general market, and none of them occupied a very conspicuous place In the trading. The most notable movement of the day was that In Mlsrourl Pacific, which, being alleged to be for manipulative purposes. ijaaa-ci-,-- . y j Jtrfj FINANCIAL NEWS was carried up nearly 4 points, and dosed at the Ui. Tills bad a sympathetic effect on the other members of the Western group. Union Pacific was very heavily absorbed, and was carried up to CO. the other transcontinental lines. Including the Atchison, responding In sympathy. Tho Baltimore & Ohio .stocks and the Norfojk & Western stocks rose conspicu ously, the former on very large dealing, and with well-sustained strength. The grangers were comparatively quiet. With the exception of Baltimore &. Ohio and Missouri Pacific, gains were not well main tained, and tho dosing was decidedly untrteadj and below the best. The Industrials as a rule were heavy. Sugar, People's Gas. Federal Steel, and the Steel & Wire stocks and other stocks of the steel group showing acute weak ness at different times. Third Avenue showed the effect of disappointment over the terms of the lease to the Metropolitan. General Elec tric was an exception, and enjoyed a net gain of Z. In spite of an easy London money rate, continuous buying of stocks ror London account, and the unprecedented balances In this country's favor, as dtsdosed by the March foreign trade statement, sterling exchange moved up an additional fraction today, and all of the usual authorities are at a failure to ex plain the movement. A favorable bank state ment Is considered assured, owing to the large gains In the Subtreasury, but ease of the local money market will fadlltato gold exports. There was moderate activity and strength In the bond market. Total sales. $2,203,000. United States 3s registered declined H In the bid price. Trices of stocks have moved downward dur ing the week, with the exception of a few stocks affected by special features of strength or which were manipulated to sustain the gen eral list, for purposes of realizing. There has been some liquidation, due In part from the demand from bears to cover short con tracts. The market has been almost entirely 'In the hands of professional operators during the four days on which business was done, and prices are not an Index to public senti ment regarding the business outlookv Theso stocks wore sold because the considerable ad vance la prices offered attractive profits to early buyers, and the question arose whether the rise had not fairly discounted the pros perous changes. The character of somo selling revealed a con viction on the part of those with good means of Information of the desirability of realizing. The admission of a Pennsylvania official that advantage had been taken of the existing high level of prices to market somo of the stock In the company's treasury was accepted as a clear Intimation that the price of the stock had gone as high as was warranted. When speculative operators in other stocks sought to tako their profits, they discovered that the semi-Investment demand, based on the dividend return, offered by stocks, had largely ceased at the high level attained by some. The professional bear traders are always on the alert for suck a condition of affairs, and they havo been prompt to take advantage of It tLls 'week by selling stocks short and tak ing the market away from those seeking to realize. As conditions of business continue favorable. It Is fair to arsums that the decline In prices will be arrested before the late ad vance has been entirely wiped out. Already bear traders find offerings decreasing In volume on a decline, and a commission-house made bids for stocks at a level below tho market. The presence of an aggressive bear element in the market, and the reactionary tendencj shown has prompted those seeking to secure stocks to withdraw their buying orders In the hope of getting In at a lower level of prices. The movement, of prices In some cases Indi cates that the bear aggression Is to afford op portunity for securing stocks at lower prices In greater volume than Is necessary for the mere covering of short contracts. "While these symptoms Indicate that the limits of the re action are not far off. there Is nothing to Indi cate whether a general advance will be re newed. Speculative opinion evidently hesitates and waits for further developments to point tho way for a further movement. Great uncertainty Is felt regarding the fu ture of the money market. Last week's dis appointing bank statement has had a contin uing Influence, and the mystery of the small Increase In cash resents In view of the heavy accretions by reason of Subtreasury operations remains unexplained. The continued outgo of funds this week from the Subtreasury to the market Las for this, reason failed to have much Influence on sentiment. Although rates for money this week have continued low. Indicating easy conditions, there has nevertheless been some calling of loans, and consequent shitting, which of neces sity causes some disturbance In the stock market. The continued rise In sterling exchange toward tho gold export point has disturbed sen timent, as fears are entertained that an out ward movement of gold would stiffen money rates bore. As a matter of tact, a small ship ment of gold was made to Buenos Ayres on Tuesday which was for London's benefit, and which In effect represented a control by Lon don of the International exchange. This move ment of sterling exchange baa detracted from the effect of the much-paraded London buying of American securities. Much mystery surrounds this movement In New Tork It Is attributed to foreigners wh carry their holdings with money borrowed In New Tork. In London It Is attributed to Amer icans who borrow money In London to carry tfcelr holdings. Only very light shipments of securities from New Tork to London can be traced through the usual channels. It Is re ported, on the other hand, that the high-priced American railroad stocks have been coming home In large volume. There has been some demand for exchange to pay the Installment due last Monday on the British war loan by American subscribers, but the amount called for Is not sufficient to account for the strength of sterling. This strength Is the more remark, able considering the favorable foreign trade balance, which has again reached unprece dented figures for March, according to the results foreshadowed by the Government's pre liminary figures. This and last week's shrink age In the banks' surplus reserves has not availed to check the upward movement of ex change. Uneasiness over this development has been a potent factor In causing hesitation In the markot. Business In bonds has been on a diminishing scale, but prices have been better sustained than In stocks. United States 4s dedlned M per cent, the 3s. coupon, K. and do registered Vn per cent In the bid price. The old 45 and 5s advanced i per cent. STOCKS. The total sales of stocks today were C49,800 sharesi. The closing quotations were: Atchison 27U do pref 72S Union Pac. pref. Wabash 70S 23i lli SOU uait. & umo M do pref Wheel. & L.
