SEW YORK STOCK MARKET. The Jndnstrlnl Were, Strong- and Railroads Were Heavy. NEW TORK. April C-Sneculatlon In the In dustrials and the railroad stocks showed a dis tinct dividing line today. Both departments were extremely Irregular, but. generally speak ing, the Industrials were strong and the rail roads were very heavy. The sagging tendency of the railroads seemed to be due for the most part to soiling to take profits. The volume of the buying demand was very much dimin ished, the reallzlns was conducted, therefore, under that much disadvantage. The selling was not in great volume, but when It did at tain to any proportions the downward course of prices was quite fast. There were some points of strength in the railroad list, but th few advances were not well maintained, and were not effective In sustaining the rest of the market. Pennsylvania was llf.ed at one time over a point, and other stocks to ahow strength were Baltimore &. Ohio preferred. Missouri Pacific. Burlington. Canada Southern, and after nn early period of weakness Southern Pacific The last-named stock sold off sharply In the morning on rumors of dl'senslons among the directors, which were circulated by bears. and subsequently denied. This was about the ,only ralroad stock to reflect any positive ag Cresslveness. the bears showing a very cau ttoia disposition, but the other Pacific stocks werosold more heavily than the average to , take'proflts. .London wao a free seller, with considerable Influence npon sentiment, and the news of rouble In West Africa, had the new .mishap to FINANCIAL NEWS the British troops in ths Free State prompted ?me- selling at first hands by the local "traders. The Industrials and the specialties made a notablo show of strength, each apparently under the Influence of some Individual cases. Sugar was bid up again by the shorts, with the sugpestlon that the recent operations might have resulted in a transfer of control. People's Gaa moved up on persistent reports of the absorption cf Ogden Gas. The Rubber stocks were strong on the dividend declara tions and the earnings statement. Leather and. .inoacco moved up under manipulation, uiy -utilities moved upward under a demand from the short Interests. The advance in each case was Irregular, and waa not fully maintained. Preliminary estimates of the week's cash changes Indicate a favorable bank sUtement tomorrow. Subtrearury operations alcne have yielded f3,8Jl,(O0 to the market. The currency movement with the Interior by express haa been considerably smaller both ways than last week, but the net gsln for New Tork Is about f300,000. , A further loan expansion is expected on ac oount of the stock market activity, but it will probably be partly offset by the further liqui dation of loans forholdlng Government bonds which have continued to con: v on the market Sterling exchange rose sharply today under the influence of London selling of stocks, firmer money In London and essler money here. The rate Is now within measurable distance of the gold-export point, and If the same tondttions continue fcr any.length of tlnfe gold will likely go out In the immediate future. There was a decrease In activity In the bond market, and priceo yielded at some points. Some lraucs were well tsken at advancing prices. Tctsl ssles. 12.783,000.
