NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Continuation of the Active and Ir resrnlar Character. NEW TOIIK. April 5.-The stock market con tinued Its active and verr Irregular character today. There was some hesitation at the out set, and proat-taklng was on a large scale during the early hours of the day. but the ag greeslie strength of some Individual stocks, notably Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio, served to sustain prices In the face of realiz ing until the latter part of the 'day. The mar-1-et then develoi-ed unmistakable symptomj of being overbought, and the pressure to vll in order to realize profits became urgent. The re action In Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio left prices without a sustaining prop, and they crumbled rapidly. The Pacifies, the grangers and some of the Southern railroads were most strongly affected, but the whole list fell easily. and efforts to support the market were ap parently withdrawn for the time being. The selling movement was allowed to spend Itself before support waa forthcoming. There waa a rally in the last 15 minutes, and It re covered only a small part of toe decline. The operations in Pennsylvania were en a similar eale to those of yesterday, and carried the price almost a point over last -ear"a highest level. The very large selling orders which were detected In the stock aroused uneasiness. In spite -of the upward movement In the price. Baltimore & Ohio was rushed also to 87h. and proved unable to hold the advance, which was unaccompanied by any news of further devel opments to account for the strength. Wall etreet was full or rumors pf a further combina tion already effected or to ccme In the trunk line territory. The rumor of a combination ..f the coalers was persistent, and raised the FINANCIAL NEWS prices of those stocks for a time, but they yielded sharply on denials of the rumors. Various minor roads in New Tork Central territory were affected In the same way. There was a very general wiping out of gains of this character In the late reaction. The Hock ing Valley stocks showed notable strength on reports of large earnings, the common crossing 40. and retaining a net gain of 1$. The gen eral news and conditions were favorable to values, money working easier, and good assur ance being afforded of a favorable bank state ment. Reports of earnings, especially of soft coal roads, were notably large. London waa a seller of stocks here, with an effect on sentiment out of all proportions to the volume of the tranaactlons. The sensitive ness of the markets to this Influence and thv continued firmness of sterling exchange whili London buys stocks, leads to considerable Questioning' as to whether foreign operations are not conducted under cover and through channels other than those under consideration. Dealings In bonds continued on a very largt scale and at advancing prices. The total sales were 33,730,000. United States 2s declined per cent and all other Issues 14 per cent In the bid price. IS CXCERTAIXTV Ravera Undecided as to the Action of ' Steel and Iron. NEW TORK. April 5. Dtscvw4ng the condi tion of the Iron and metal trade, the Iron Age todsy says: An event of great importance Is the comple tion of the consolidation of Western sheet mills, under the name of the American Sheet Steel Company, with the Apollo Iro.l A Steel Company Included. This makes the organiza tion more potent than It the Apollo had been continued as en Independent establishment. The absorption of this great company, the largest producer of beets In the world. Is a triumph for the promoters of the consolidation. Those wbos-9 Interests require them to make some decision relative to the particular course of the Iron market are In aa great perplexity as ever. Nothing has really occurred within the past week to Indicate decisively whether values are more likely to go down than up. The great consolidations are now exerting tht Influence In maintaining prices which was so freely pre dicted a year or mere ago at the time when they were being formed. They seem to be un disturbed by the concetntons being made by small establishments competing for the same clans of trade. Further, the price of Bessemer pig Iron, which may be regarded aa the key to the steel situation, remains firm. The report that the Carnegie Company has made a contract to deliver 40,000 tons of structural steel in England during the Summer Is officially denied. Sales of pig Iron and steel ra'ls are being made for export, however, and the projects for continued business of this character are excellent. Inquiries are dally being received from Germany and Austria, as well as from England, fer quotations en pig Iron. Foreign FInnncInl Xews. NEW TORK. April 5. The Commercial Ad vertiser's London financial cablegram says: The markets were stagnant and heavy throughout the session, still effected by the approaching holidays. Americans were dull and sagged all day. A few slight attempts were made to rally them, but sellers always preponderated until In the street, where a fractional recovery took place. The only hard spots were Baltimore A Ohio. Central Pacific and Pennsylvania. Coppers got a set-back on proflt-taklrg by both French and English sell ers. Ttntos were BOU. Anacondas 10 13-10. The bank lost 100,000 gold to Argentina. Money waa very easy, and the large eum due the bank was wholly repaid. Bills were a shade harder. The bank return showed note ex pansion and bullion reduction, due to the usual quarterly movements. A reduction of public deposits was due to disbursements. The reduc- WHEAT!
