Threatened Metal - Workers Strike Affected the Entire List. NEW YORK. March 2. The stock market failed to show any positive strength at any time during the day, and In the late dealings the whole list yielded to bear pressure on the news of the threatening aspect of affairs among the .metal-workers In Chicago. The loss of Iron and steel stocks yesterday, which -was due to large selling orders on Chicago account, was thus erplalned. The bears were busy In this group of stocks all day. and supplemented the news of the labor troubles with many vague rumors of a purpose to defer dividends, which have hitherto been foretold on more or less re liable authority. Reports were circulated also of enormous rival combinations to be organ ized to compete in this Industry. As the re sult of this pressure, the majority of the stocks in the group were depressed 2V4 to 3 points. The character of much of the selling was made obvious by the sharp rallies on bear cov ering, American Hoop, Tenncesee Coal and Na tional Steel recovering from 2 to 3 points .it different times. Sugar was subjected to heavy selling all day, which was without other ex planation than the continued doubt over the -dividend proppecta. but which was attributed to a new bear account. The stock dropped to par. for the first time since the summer depres sion of 1800. incident to the National political campaign, and fell further to 90. ralllng feverishly, and cloning unsteady at a net los of GVi. Third Avenue suffered from additional liquidation incident to fears of a heavy assess ment, fell an extreme 451, to a level almost 20 point under the high price of February of last year. The stock rallied sharply, and was weil supported during the latter part of the day. People's Ga9 was raided on the report of the prpjected proceedings against the legallt) of the combination. Consolidated Gas was forced -town 9 points oa llsht transactions. Pullman, FINANCIAL NEWS Sugar preferred. Tobacco and Metropolitan Street Railway suffered to the extent of 3 to 3& The railroad stocks yielded unwillingly until the late raid an the market, wjicn large blocks were thrown' over, St. Paul leading with an extreme drop of 2 points. Baltimore & Ohio. New York Central and Southern Pacific were also notably affected. The later rally on bear covering reduced the net losses of the railroad, to a. fraction, except In the cares mentioned. There was disappointment that London did not respond with greater enthouslasm to the news of the relief of Ladysmlth by buying sjocks. The disposition there was to realize, and London was a small seller here. The pros pect of a heavy decline in surplus reserves In the bank statement Induced some selling, but the preliminary estimates nt the cash move ment by expires indicate a small net gain on the interior movement. This is attributed to shipments by interior banks to New York for the purpose of buying Goi'ernment bonds. But the gain on this account is quite insignificant, compared with the week's losoes by the banks to the Subtreasury, which have amounted to $7,498,000, thus making inevitable a further decline of several mllll6ns In the surplus re serves of the banks. The bond market was rather dull, and prices yielded in sympathy with stocks. Total sales. $1,035,000. United States 5s declined X Pr cent in the bid price. BONDS. U. S. 2s, res 103 IGen.
