EW lORK STOCK MARKET. Considerable HardcBlns; Apparent, in Spite of Bxtcnsive Proflt-Takng-. NEW XORK, Feb. S The etock market today was subject to a notable process of digestion, as d came through thtf ordeal remarkably well, ftxis which were leaders la aeUity and rrength during tbe movement of last week Wfe hoaMl sold to take proata. The proflt taklng was met by a strong outside demand. kid (Teringc were absorbed with lHUe diffi culty and without an material concession In prt o being mode neoesearj. Indeed, any ap proach in prices to Saturday's level resulted ir a hardening la the market, the surface be coming practsonNr MnrteMing at Saturday's lfve OSorfitBS of pteok aQ to a minimum, and buvers. In order to secure stocks, were ob iged to raise thotr bids to a potnt to yield prints to tbe tellers on their last -week's pur chases. While profeeshmal operators were thus tak ing profits at some potets In tbe Mat, they were rep ac.ng tbotr funds In other stocks, which bad not moved last week, or in which the move ment had been oah) inaugurated. Thus, with trading proceeding on an active eeate. and the movement of prices taking on a considerable dog-re of irregularity, tbe market presented all the characterlsttos of a true bull movement, rpward movements m prtaes were easily aMiirvod and the speculative sentiment snowed Helf quick to reapond to an new development, regarding special stocks. Thus a number of railroad stocks reap ended untokty and emphat caly to teturns of oarninaB for the fourth vrwK tii January, showing largo werease over the high le! Of sast year The lead us at th railroad Mot were the Nor t ik Woatera aaaehs, the fterth week state ment showing ar aaareace of $12964 over last year As this to or- of tho rsass which by reason of prcvloeuT hay autiafB is able to retura the FINANCIAL NEWS current rate of operating expenses, the showing was doubly effective. The common stock ad vanced 3 and the preferred 1 Louisville, St Louis & San Francisco, Denver & Rk Grande and a number of other railroads responded to good statements of earnings. St. Paul and Bur lington showed renewed strength on reports of an Improvement In the movement of grain on tbe Western lines, in addition to the extraordi nary movement of general merchandise. The iron and steel stocks continued ery prom inent, and the leadership was shifted also under the influence of realising In American Steel & Wire and one other. The new leader of the group was National Steel, which was heavily bought upon reports of enormous earnings for the past year, to be shown, by the forthcoming report. Reports of a similar kind have been unheeded for the most prt In Wall street, but today the stock market shot up under the influ ence an extreme 3 Other members of the small group closely allied by identity of owner ship, moved in close sympathy. American Hoop and Tin Plate are thla class. Republic Steel, the Smelting stocks and Anaconda were also strong. Speculators are Inclined to discount to some extent the Increase In the circulation provided for In the financial bill In congress, and In consequence Ignore some of the Indica tions of encroachment on he money supply on other accounts. The market cloeM active and strong at the best prices for many stocks The bond market was Irregular and not eo active as of late. Total sales, $2,708,500.
