THE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1900. ENGLISH PARTRIDGES. Description of the Birds and a Pro posal toFJnisli Them. BYTON, Dorriagton, Shrewsbury. Ens. Jan. S. (To the Editor.) I see from The Oregonian that the sportsmen of the Valley have not yet been able to set the English partridges which they got up a purse for. I see that a certain gentleman says he can procure tho birds in Saxony. But they are not the English partridges at all, if, as he savs. Uipv have red lees. From what I gather, they are the French bird, which is a -ery poor game bird, as it only rises once, should it be hunted for a day the rest of the time using his legs. The genuine English partridge is a gray blrd, with brown legs, and is in every way a t-p-top game bird, and would make a fine adjunct to our other Valley game birds. I ha e had large experience with the Eng lish bird, and consider it the only one worth shipping to Oregon. Should the committee who have the purchasing of the birds like me to give them quotations for, aay, 100 pairs, should be pleased to do so would have them crated and shipped so as to arrive in flrst-class condition. Should they want references, can give Hon. John Hunt, Clymer, Or.; Miss Jennie Griffith, of Ienry pheasant fame. Clymer, Or.; Pro fessor Peebles, TVoston, Or. Hoping I am not troubling you too much to k:ndly put this letter where the Portland gun club's members can -see It, I thank you In an ticipation. "vV. F.
