TO3W YORK STOCK MARKET. Considerable Show of Animation and Strength, at the Close. NEW YORK, Jan. 10. The dullness and apathy wSrich nave prevailed in the stock mar "ket all week gave place In the late dealings today to a considerable show of animation and strength. Business broadened out," and em braced a greatly extended list of stocks, and practically all that were dealt in rose briskly to a level substantially above that of last night. The immediate motive of the buj lng movement was the preliminary estimates of gains In cash for the week by the associated banks, which during the -week has shown with sufficient clear ness that cash reserves were being largely re plenished, but it Is rather a tradition with stock operators to defer action to discount the bank statement until Friday afternoon. There has "been a large waiting contingent In Wall street on the chance for some positive development In the market before committing themselves to action. AH the larger commission houses have been adrising their customers to refrain from, ac tion and await the market. Apparently a large proportion of these were Impressed by the earlier events of the day in the market, and came in with, buying orders in force In the last jiour. The professional traders themselves turned in a body to the long side of the mar ket, after having made a savage drive In the morning at Third Avenue, breaking that stock over 10 points. The amount of stocks brought out on the decline did not prove encouraging, and the rest of the market was not acutely af fected. A number pf positive points of strength ai developed, notably in Missouri Pacific, in which there was evidence of operations by a pool. The wfcole of the group was affected by sym pathy, notwittotandlne the deterioration in FINANCIAL NEWS earnings on account of a small cotton move ment. The metal group was also strong, led by Steel & Wire, which was bought in antici pation of dividend action. Sugar was a promi nent figure in the advance on heavy dealings, in which the demand from shorts was a large factor. The principal points of strength and the vantage jolnts of the late general advance in prices was inaugurated. There were rumors all day of the relief of Ladysmlth, but, as Lon don sold mora stocks than she bought in this market, the rumors were without much effect. It is estimated that the associated banks had gained up to Thursday night nearly $10,000,000 la cash, the estimate being based on figures furnished by the principal banks of the ex press movement. The late operations with the eubtreasury furnished $1,406,000. There has been no evidence of any large loan expansion, in the stock market, but the time money market and that fo' mercantile paper has been quite active. A notable increase in the surplus re serve Is, however, considered assured. The market for railroad bonds continued firm all day. Total sales, $3,220,000. Moriey In Tomatoes. Hood "River Stfn. ' It Is interesting, fo note that those "who. made on estimate of he quantity of to. iriatoes they produced last season on a given amount of land all run above 20 tons, and some above 30 tons .per acre, makiner a crop from $150 to $1000 per acre, according to the quantity and time of ri pening. It will undoubtedly pay any one having a small amount of ground to plant It with tomatoes, as It Is a crop whioh yields abundantly and is easily handled. ;e When your nervous system becomes weak- l ened and the vital forces impaired, then exhaua- I tlon results.
