THE MOENING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1900. THE MINES AT GRANITE SATISFACTORY ASSAYS OF ORB FROM THE GREBNSDDE5. 3HU out the Magnolia. Completed Yalncs Continue Good at the Golden Fleece. GRANITE, Or., Jan. 6. The first as eays of ore from ithe Greensldes mine were made a few days ago. The tunnel has been run 49 feet, -where it cuts the ledge. Three assays were made at this point, one showing 514 ounces of silver, worth, at the market price, $30S 40, and $41 34 In gold; total value, $349 74. Another gave $63 in silver and $24 SO In gold; total, $87 SO. The third one gave $2S SO silver and ?S 26 gold, or a total of $37 05. This is an average of $15S 20, and is a fair showing of the value of the ore in this J ledge. The property is two miles east of the Magnolia, and is operated by Harvey & Miner. The mill at the Magnolia is completed and began dropping stamps today. It is r.ot known at this time what the results of the iirst day's work will be. The values at the Golden Fleece, four miles from here, continue good, and the numerous people so recently located on this ledge are all happy. The feeling of certainty grows stronger as the days go by, and the permanency of values in this district assured. It is pleasing to note the fact that Portland people are finding their way into the land of treasure vaults, and all are convinced that Eastern Ore gon is all right. This is one of the real mineral belts of the world, and its friends are anxious for others to see for them selves. Quotations of Minim? Stocks. SPOKANE, Jan. 8. The ledge at this depth is IS feet wide. Talues have in creased from $1 03 at the surface to $5 50 at n depth of eight feet, and is still improving. Buildings are still going up here at a rep d rate, many substantial ones near--r.g completion. Property is changing hrds at a lively rate. A lot 50x100 feet, r.-xt to the Blue Mountain American of f.re, sold for $8500, and Gelser property, on Granite street, for $4500 lately. Umatilla County Polities. Pendleton Republican. There is very little talk of fusion this year, and the outlook now is that there W.11 be only two tickets In the field next spr.ng in this county. The belief Is quite general that the populists will nominate a full ticket and refuse to have anything whatever to do with the democrats on ac count of the treatment they received at the hands of that party two years ago. As the leading democrats of the county repudiate the Chicago platform and refuse to acknowledge Bryan as a fit person to champion the cause of the party of Jeffer son, it is not likely that any attempt will be made to nominate a democratic ticket. The republican party is far from being in good "working condition, but a few months' time may find the party in better shape to win a victory. At all events it will be necessary to have a representa tive county convention at which the dele gates will be allowed to use their own good judgment and not permit themselves to be dictated to by the "bosses" after their ar r.val in tills city. Enjoying Fine Walks. Grant County News. When the reign of mud is supreme as at present, all the residents of Prairie City ar predate the fine stone street-crossings and the well-graveled walks. That is, all the residents of Prairie City appreciate them, If they are fortunate enough to visit other towns which boast these improve ments. A Controversy Ended. Eugene Register. The question as to whether or not pros perity is here, has heen settled beyond controversy. A country editor was held rp In Chicago the other day and TObbed Of $202. Modernizing Eastern Oregon. Grant County 2Cews. Combinations of capital are centering in Eastern Oregon In enterprises that will modernize this part of the state. An Oregon Postmaster. WASHINGTON, Jan. 8.-L. L.
