KEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Continued Heavy Selling on Foreign Account Was a Feature. NEW TORK, Jan. 4. The most conspicuous feature of the day's trading in stocks was the eontlnued Tieavy selling for foreign account, about which there was considerable mystery. The orders to Bell in New Tork came from Ion don, but London attributed them to Berlin ac count. Vienna also reported sales on Its ex change for Berlin account. In spite of the ex planation that Ihe Berlin selling was forced by the money stringency, the Berlin discount rate showed a rise of only per cent. In Berlin ltsair the depression was attributed to the de cline In English consols and to the capture by the British of the German steamer General. While the motive of the foreign following -was obscure and explanations confused, the fact of it was beyond doubt. Sales by the arbitrage houses in New Tork again footed up 60,000 shares of the various international stocks. There is undoubtedly some uneasiness in finan cial circles abroad over the possibility of fric tion between Germany and Great Britain over the seizures of German vessels. It is worthy of pote that, while interest rates declined In Lon don, the Bank of England showed a recupera tion in resources in Its -weekly statement, and 6terUnr exchange at the Important financial ; FINANCIAL NEWS centers advanced sharply, in spite of the har dening money rate in Berlin and Pa.rls. The New Tork sterling exchange rate advanced at the same time, without affecting the local i money market, in which ibe.rate. ruled from 5 j to 6 per cent. The inference is warranted that London is preparing to make further requisi tions for foreign gold supply, and that her money market has to meet demands for the coming government loans. In our stock market the considerable offerings for foreign account drove prices down at the opening near a point In international stocks. The leel of prices thus attained, cdmlng after yesterday's sharp reaction, proved so Inviting that large and substantial buying appeared, which forced a recovery in prices by the end of the first hour. Later New York Central was bid up sharply to 137, and the short- Interest in Sugar waa driven to rout by stories of a set tlement of the trade war. Yesterday's reactionary market rlnduced quite an enlargement or the short interest, and their demand to cover was an important element In the daya recovery in prices. The specialties showed wider changes than railroad stocks, but the demand for railroads was large and well distributed, and, except for the sp'ettal strength of the trunk lines, their gains were quite uni form. A movement to take profits In the last hour caused a material reaction, reaching to overS points in some of the industrials and between 1 and 2 points in many railroads. Dealings in bSnds were not large, and the market was Irregular. Total sales, par value, $1,755,000. Depression in tbe Market on Account of Berlin Banlc Decrease. NEW TORK, Jan. 4. The Commercial Ad vertiser's London financial cablegram says: Although closing above the worst, there was general depression In the markets here today on account of the position or the market, due to the bad showing or the Berlin bank, shewing a decrease or 8,000,000 marks In notes and 2,000,000 marks in cash. The German banks have notified their customers that they must reduce their speculative commitments, and this brought about forced sales all day, particularly In the American department. A rumor from Canada about a bank failure In Germany ap pears to have no basis except the difficulties of a private banker and broker. The depression was increased by the local loan issue, alluded to yesterday, but apprehensions were diminished by the publication of the Bank of England's re turn for the week, showing an Increase of 2,750,000 of bullion reserve, without any In crease of notes. Steady buying by New Tork partly counter acted the effect of the Berlin sales or Ameri cans, but failed to reassure London, which was also unsettled by manufactured waf rumors, such as that General Buller had been defeated and that General Gatacre Tvas surrounded by Hoer forces. Paris was upset by the trouble in Berlin. The bank bought 170.000 In eagles and 25,000 gold In bars. At the same time, 50,000 was withdrawn on the Indian currency account. All gold arrivals are going to the bank. Money was easy, call money at 3 per cent being Tin lendable In the arternoon. All loans from the bank to the market have been liquidated.
