    THE MOBNING OBEGON1AN, THTJBSDAY, JANUARY i. 1900.
DUKE OF WESTMINSTER
"WAS TO BRITAIN WHAT BOCKE
FELLER IS TO THIS COUNTRY.
His Income Was Derived From GOO
Acres of Land Situated in the
Heart of London,
The Duke of "Westminster, "who died In
London, December 22, was, from the
worldly goodB point of view, to Great
Britain what John D. Rockefeller Is to
this country. Hla income, commonly
computed at from $5000 to $10,000 a day,
was principally derived from 600 acres
of land situated in the heart of fashion
able London and known generally as Bei
gTavla. Included in this habitat of the
smart set were the palatial residences
constituting Eaton Square, Grosvenor
Square and Belgrave Mansions and the
immediate territory tributary to this ultra
fashionable vicinity. Westminster's
wealth was so immense that when his
racehorse, Flying Fox, winner of this
year's Derby, won the three $50,000 purses
offered by the English Jockey Club last
season the duke donated the entire $150,
000 to the poor of London.
Although Westminster owned one-half
of the residential end of fashionable Lon
don and kept up, day in and day out, an
immense establishment at Grosvenor
House in that city, he preferred to pass
most of his life at Eaton Hall, Ills country
residence in Cheshire, a magnificent pal
ace inside, but architecturally one of the
most hideous edifices ever erected in Eng
land or any other country.
There, the duke occupied himself with
looking after his racing and breeding es
tablishments, and by planning palaces for
himself and cottages for his tenants. He
had jutt the two hobbies racehorses and
boilding and his eldest son, since dead,
was often wont to declare that "it took
father 10 years and $10,000,000 to build
Eaton and stock the stables, but it won't
take me 10 weeks to pull the house down
and sell the horses."
Westminster was the first duke of the
name, and despite his Immense wealth,
inherited many of the miserly and penu
rious habits which made the name of bis
father, the second Marquis of Westmin
ster, a by-word in the North of England,
where his close-fisted habits were house
hold gossip. The duke's clothes were al
ways of the "hand-me-down" type, and,
along with his pinched features, conveyed
the idea that he was of the half-starved
shabby genteel class.
So reasonably apparent was this that,
at the time of the dynamite scare, when
William Ewart Gladstone was as care
fully guarded by the police at Hawarden
castle as the czar of Bussla is in his
periodical pilgrimages, Westminster, while
walking through the grounds of Haward
en, was picked up by the police as a sure
enough tramp and a possible dynamiter.
"I am a friend of Mr. Gladstone. In
deed, I am the Duke of Westminster,"
gasped the nobleman as the "bobby" was
hustling him to the improvised station.
"Dont tell me that," replied the blue
coat, ""but come along."
Happily, Mr. Gladstone was attracted
hy the altercation, and the duke was al
lowed to go by the somewhat abashed
officer. To still further show ho'w care
less the duke was of tils personal appear
anceswhen Flying Fox was "being pa
raded in the "bird cage," or paddock,
prlcr to the race for the Derby, Westmin
ster approached Tod Sloan, the American
jockey, who was engaged to ride the
French horse, Holocauste, with the In
quiry, "What do you think of Flying
Fox s chances?"
"'My good man," replied Sloan, suppos
ing his inquirer was a tout, "you can tell
your folks you have seen a racehorse."
The duke tried politics for awhile, and
was a warm adherent of Mr. Gladstone
until the latter espoused the home rule
cause, when he severed himself from the
liberal party and declined "to hold any
social communion with one who was play
ing with treason." Thanks to the inter
vention of the Prince of Wales, the quar
rel was made up, but the duke retired
from political affairs.
