YEAR'S GRAIN FLEET
Portland's Shipping Prestige Is
Wei! Maintained.
EXPORTS IN .DETAIL FOR 1899
.Pnset Sound and San Francisco Both.
Distanced Average Over One Mil
lion Buanels Per Month.
For the second time In her history,
Portland has distanced all other ports on
the .Pacific coast as a wheatshlpplng cen-
ter. The slow movement of wheat ltf then
North, andva" Weh more vigorous move
ment in California during 1899, prevented
the .metropolis of the Northwest equalling
the record of 1898, when her shipments
were greater than all other Pacific coast
ports combined. In 1898 Portland shipped
a. fraction over 50 per cent of alj the
vheat exported from the coast, Tacoma
and Seattle -coming second with 24.88 per
cent, with J San Francisco a very close
third with 24.4per. cent, during the year
Just closed. Portland shipped 48 per cent
of the entire amount shipped from the
Pacific coast, San Francisco 28 per cent,
and Seattle and Tacoma 24 per cent.
The total amount (flour included), to all
ports, for the year was 12,431,807 hushels,
valued at 7,52L150. Flour shipments lor
the year' were f about -200,000 barrels less
than in the record-breaking year of 1S9S,
but the-,decrease was not so heavy pro
poriionalely as the decrease In wheat ship
ments. The total wheat shipments to all
ports for 1893 were 19,831,590 bushels. In
cluded in which was 1,133,878 barrels of
flour, so that, considering the relative
volume of the movement of wheat during
the two years, the milling interest has
made a positive gain in 1S99.
To offset this apparent shrinkage in com
parison with the record-breaking year of
1898, there Is now held In the states of
Oregon and Washington a larger stock of
wheat than has ever been on hand at the
beginning of a new year. The stocks in
the interior or at tide water available
for export will in the aggregate exceed
22,000.000 bushels. Portland's proportion of
this surplus to be handled will furnish
business equal to that of the year 1899,
for more than 12 months, without the ad
dition of the many millions of bushels
of the 1900 -crop -which will be pouring
into the docks and warehouses long be
fore the present surplus In the country
can be gotten out of the way.
Portland's foreign shipments of 1899 have
been beaten but three times, once by a
large margin In the record-breaking jear
of 1898, and again In 1895 and 1E97, both
times by such small margins that a single
cargo added to the fleet of 1899 would
have placed that year next to the best on
record. The following figures show the
foreign shipments from Portland for the
past 10 years:
Tear. Bushels.
