The local markets were fairly active yester day, with bat lew changes of importance. -There was a good demand for green produce, but coun try stuff was la light request. Receipts were sm&lL The stock of poultry carried over was partly cleaned up at the former quotations. Eggs again declined, and are sUH weak. There are no changes la the grocery list Bank; Statement. Prices Paid for Wheat at Home and Abroad. The local wheat market was very quiet yes terday. For good "Walla. Walla wheat, 41c per bushel was quoted. Valley was quoted at 75 77c per cental, the latter the very outside figure. At Chicago. CHICAGO, reb. 23. There was an easier feel ing in vheat at the opening, due to heavy re ceipts at Minneapolis and Duluth and easier cables. These items together and a weal: open ing to the New York stock market, were the Influences which started May wheat at from 52 to 5252t;c. An Impression which began to prevail, that the visible supply was likely to elmw a heavier decrease than had been expected, advanced the price In the first hour to 53sc The visible supply decreased 1.257,000 bushels, and It was not generally expected to have fallen off more than half that much. An advance took place in tlje price of era about the same time, and helped wheat. Some authorities place the sales at fully :,O0O shares, principally St. Paal and Louisville & Nashville. There was some selling of the general list on rumors of an extra session of congress, a belief obtaining in some quarters that the appropriation bills will fail because of lack of time, and that the president will have to call the new congress together. If only to enact these measures. Canadian Pacific nat urally led the list in point of decline, the stock selling down 8'.4 per cent to 41. only COO shares having been traded in. The decline in the usu ally active Issues was equal to Sl7i per cent. After the publication of the St- Paul statement for January, which showed an Increase In net earnings of $33,000, the grangers improved, and a rally of 8 per cent ensued. The Evening Post's London cablegram says: The influence of the passing of the Canadian Pacific dividend and the weakness of the Paris bourse flattened all the markets here today, and Canadian Pacifies were down G per cent, closing at the lowest. Americans and Grand Trunks have fallen sym pathetically. The American loan Is at 3V4 pre mium. The allotment letters are going out to morrow. Ribs May, $5 ZO. Desert Lands Alonjr Snake River. Forbes MoRae, Thomas Butler and Mack Smith, of Everett,, and Harry Col lord, of Fidalgo City, have hotnesteaded 160 acres each, and Robert Beecham, James Sheppard, of Everett; David Long staff, Bert Rathbun. Mary Wyath, of Se attle, and Alvin Bacheller and Alfred Llvesly, of Pasco, have, under the desert land act, purchased 2215 acres of land a't Old Ainsworth, or near the Intersection of the Snake and Columbia rivers. The entire tract located by these persons makes a total of 2855 acres, and this ac tion Is taken with the Intention of irri gating' the same. Water Is to be taken out of Snake river above this point, familiarly caller Four-Mile rapids, where the fall is 12 feet to the mile, and the horsepower is given at 230,000. As the desert land act calls for 25 per cent cash down, balance within five years; and requires the pur chaser to expend $1 per acre for' three years in Improvements on the land, it is presumed something will be done toward developing this particular section.
