THE MOEKIKG- OREGONIAN, EEZDAT FEBRUARY" 22, 1895. TICKETS BELOW COST UNUSUAL FIGURES THE RESULT OP !THB COAST RATE 3YAB. Speculation tir Futures A Year's Roslneas on the Coast Bottle Paper Washed Ashore Notes. BAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2L The Pa clflo Coast Steamship Company this morn ing Issued a new freight and passenger tariff, to go Into effect March L between Sound ports and this city. These are the figures: Cabin passage, $3; second-class, $2 50; freight, $1 a 'ton. So far as can he ascertained, these are the lowest figures ever quoted on the coast. The steamer "Walla Walla will do the first business under the new schedule. The rate is quoted for the benefit of Meyer & Acker mann's opposition steamer, Farallon, which is doing a large business, her rate being 310 for cabin and $3 for second-class. The Farallon left the Sound yesterday with a full passenger list. She is due to arrive Saturday, when Meyer & Acker mann trill quote a rate to meet the ?3 rate of the Pacific Coast Steamship Com pany. An unprecedented, steamship pas senger traffic Is the result of the cut. The rates on the City of Topeka, which will sail from the Sound for Alaska on Febru ary 22, will be 123 for cabin and ?10 for steerage to Juneau. Discounting the Future. The famous Minnesota miller, who Is trying to eliminate all features of chance in the grain trade, that he may buy wheat at his own price and speculate with the flour he makas from it, should widen the scope of his anti-option bill and prevent discounting the future the world over, says the San Francisco Commercial News. Aa an Illustration of what happens now, while men are still left at liberty to use their own judgment in business affairs, the case of the Gantock Rock may be cited. That vessel arrived at Astoria on her can celing date, February 15, under charter to load at Portland, something like 100 miles up the river from Astoria. The can celing day, as usually is the case, was. fixed to end at srndown The ship reached Astoria so late it was Impossible to reach Portland by sundown, so the charter lapsed. By this mischance the ship lost a good charter, and the charterers were re lieved of a vessel that, had she arrived a few hours earlier, would have been on their hands at about 4s above spot rates for tonnage. A Nautical Coincidence. On April 23, 1S91. Captain J. Watts, mas ter of the barkentine Chehalis, threw over board a "bottle paper." His position at the time was latitude 25:55 north, longitude 124,30 west. The paper was found Janu ary 10, 1885, on Westport beach, Chehalis county, in the very county in which the vessel was built. It had drifted almost due north hundreds of mile with far less speed but with almost as much accuracy as a homing pigeon. The find was forwarded to Washington and Captain Watts has just received the news from the hydro graphic office there, with the thanks of the office for Lis co-operation in the work of Investigating ocean currents. According to a Sydney paper, the ship Habitant, which was injured by fire some months ago at Melbourne, has been pur chased by the Melbourne Shipping Com pany, Limited, and will be converted into a floating dock. As the Habitant has a lifting power of 2400 tons, she will doubt less prove a great acquisition to the marl time facilities of the port. The new dock will take the place, of the company's old floating dock, which for 40 years has been moored off Willlamstown. and for several years was the only drydock in Victorian waters. The Dalles Line Open. THE DALLES. Feb. 2L The Dalles, Portland & Astoria Navigation Company has started its river service. The steam er Regulator, which has been thoroughly renovated, made the Initial trip to the Cascades yesterday, carrying a large load of freight and passengers. The lower boat, on account of an accident In launch ing, did not reach the locks, but through connections will be made from now on. As nearly all The Dalles merchants ship Ly steamer, a large amount of freight will be carried. A Derelict Sighted. The captain of the Dunearn reports to the branch hydrographlc office that he sighted the derelict hull of a wooden ves sel on January 20 In latitude 25 north, longitude 12S west. He considered it a serious danger to navigation, as the hull was only two feet above water. Murine Notes. The coal ship Dumfrecshlre Is on the way up the river. The Louden Hill docked at the new O. R. & N. dock yesterday. The Masters and Pilots' Association hold a meeting tomorrow night. The Inverness-shire will discharge S09 tons of coal at Astoria before coming up. The British Merchant will finish load lrj wheat Saturday and leave down Mon day. Tho well-known ship T. F. Oakqs has been chartered to load sugar at Honolulu for New York. To Repeal a. FrancM.e. PHILADELPHIA. Feb. a. The oom miitee on law of the city council this af ternoon decided to report favorably to t""5 council an ordinance reneallntr th franchise granted to the Mutual Automat- J Ic Telephone Company, which concern Is alleged to have distributed 352.000 shares of its stock among coundlmen and others for the purpose of securing permission to con struct its system in Philadelphia, which alleged action is the cause of the present investigation by the council. The imme diate causes of the committee's decision were that the company has failed to file a bond of $30,000, as provided In the ordi nance, and that the cost of printing the ordinance has not been paid. 9 CAUGHT WITH CHICKENS Mr, Sturlnveather's Foirls Found in Another Man' "Wagon. OREGON CITY, Feb. 2L Henry Hollo way was bound over to the grand jury to day by Justice Dixon on the charge of stealing chickens from W. A. Starkweath er. Some time ago. Mr. Starkweather lost a coopful of marketable fowls, and he then tied a string to the henhouse door and ar ranged a bell in his sleeping-room so it would notify him in case an attempt were made to get at the chickens. About mid night last night the bell was rung, and Mr. Starkweather, who Is an aged man, called his son to look after the chickens. The young man found half the fowls gone from the coop from which the alarm came, and he heard a hen squawk a short dis tance up the road, In a clump of timber. A neighbor was aroused to help capture the thief, and while they were getting ready for the attack a team drove paBt, going toward Portland, and it was ascer tained that there were a lot of fowls in the wagon. The men soon overtook the team, and the whole outfit was taken back to Mr. Starkweather's for the night, and this morning brought here. Holloway says he had been to Hubbard, and was return ing to Portland. But his team became fagged, he says, and he stopped several hours, and built a camp-fire in the woods between Clackamas station and Stark weather's place. Just as he was ready to proceed on his way, he says, another man came along and sold him the chickens which he had with him, and which were identified as Starkweather's. His story is not credited by the officers. The stealing of chickens has been so common and so bold in the suburbs of this city and be tween here and Portland during the past few months that there Is now very little patience with this species of thievery. The large frame building of I. L. Clarke, at Clarke's postoffice, was burned yester day morning. A 10-year-old son of Mr. Clarke was feeding the stock early In the morning and set his lantern on a beam while he was about his work. A cat Jump ed upon the beam and upset and broke the lantern, and the place was instantly aflame. The horses were gotten safely out of the barn. The building cost about $1000 five years ago, and it and the contents were insured for $1000. e MERRY WEDDING BELLS. A Grandfather and a. Grandmother Married In Jew Yoric. SARATOGA. N.
