Is the growth of but a. few years past, and promises to become an impor tant factor in the development of the resources of the state, eays the Whatcom Reveille. One of the most Important branches of this fish busi ness Is the shipping by express of the fresh a!mon taken in the bays and rivers about the Bound, and nowhere are such opportunities for this business offered as here on Bellingham bay. In the Nooksack rier large quantities of these fish are taken dally, and every train leaving the coast carries many boxes of iced fisn -for consumers in the East, where it is highly prized and brings a good price. In .this city are located several firms engaged in the shipping of flsh. W. J. Rogers & Son and the Facific Coast Trading Company sending away consignments every day, and the only limit on the quantity is the supply obtainable. In New "Whatcom are "the Behring Sea Fish Company and the Viking Company, both of which are shipping by ex press, but cannot secure flsh to fill their Eastern orders. The market for halibut Is good, and snany vessels are engaged in taking the fl3h. The result of this winter's fishing has been xsoi to the vessels engaged, and several mora v.Hl be put Into the service, as those now com ing in with a full catch do not keep the mar Vet supplied. The old Bellingham Fish Com pany, of this city, has been reorganized, and will reflt the schooner Bellingham for the hall Ijut trade, in addition to puttinjr in several sal mon traps among the islands where the fish nre known to run. This company Is fully equipped, and under the new organization will be known as the Alaska Fishing & Packing tbmpany. It is a strong company, and will ar id a market for all the fish that can be se- .c-ired. The facilities for handling halibut and ether flsh on Bellingham bay are such that the trade, formerly centered at Seattle, may be re lr.;veJ to this city, on account of the shorter d'stancc to the banks and equal shipping accom modations. THE GRAIN MARKETS. Srlce Paid for Wheat at Home and Abroad. The local wheat market is almost lifeless, and St Is difficult to give quotations which will rep resent the value of wheat. Toreign buyers are altogether indifferent. Walla Walla wheat for export may be said to be worth from 4041c per bushel, and Valley 7577"c per cental. At Chicago. CHICAGO. Feb. IS. The wheat pit at the opening was flooded with selling orders at ic lie'ow Saturday's closing prices. The latest trading on Saturday was at 52?',c for May, and at the opening very few buyers could be found ait CS'iC, and there were even more sellers than "buyers at 52Vfec. so that 52c became almost im mediately the trading price. An anticipated de xrease In the visible stocks since a week ago of only 500.000 bushels was a potent bear factor. The Northwestern receipts Were 155, carloads more than those of the corresponding 7uy""a 5 car ago. The weather also was unfavorable for a continuance, of a free movement from The farmers. A great deal of long wheat was ugaln offered on the break, and although at around 52c and 52Sfco local shorts covered abundantly, there was little reaction during the rst hour and a half of the session. The visible supply soon began to give evidence of a larger decrease than had been looked for, and when the decrease was ultimately found to amount tj 1.59S.OO0. or three times as much as many Iiad expected, the shorts commenced taking bak the wheat they had unloaded. From being quiet and weak at C2c, the price gradually hard ened until about two hours from the close it lecotcred to 52L,c. Primary markets altogether received 250.000 bushels, against 140.000 bushels a week ago, and 280,000 bushels a year ago. The English visible supply showed a decrease of 850,000 bushels, following a decrease of 3 420.000 bushels on the previous week, and New York reported a good business done there for expert. The price advanced here to 52ic, and closed at 525ic At Xew York. NEW YORK, Fob. IS. Flour Dull and un bl.anged. Speculation at the stock exchange was quiet today, only 130,600 shares changing hands. The market was er ratic in its course, and did not develop any definite tone until the close, when. If anything, it was Arm on covering of short contracts. Prob ably the real feature of the day was the heavi ness and idling of anthracite coal stocks. New Jersey Central broke from S37s to Sl: Lacka wanna from ISS'.fi to 15G4: Delaware & Hud son from 12714 to 125, and Reading from 9 to 9Va. Xew Jersey Central, which is heavily over sold, rallied to S3483T6 at the close. Lacka wanna recovered to 158. and Delaware & Hud son to 123. The depression is due to the un favorable reports of the leading anthracite coal ers for 1801, and the delay in fixing up the per centages of output, which gives the bears a chance to circulate reports of unfavorable ru more. Erie was weakened on the talk of fore closure and heavy assessments on Junior se curities. The common fell 1H per cent to Si, and the preferred 2 per cent to 17. In the last hour Chicago Gas ran off U her cent to 72, under sales by brokers who had been pur chasing during the morning tesslon. St. Paul and the other grangers were a shade weaker at the opening on the poor statement of the former for the second week of the current month. Lon don operations were insignificant, the foreigners first selling Louisville & Nashville, St. Paul and Erie, and then turning buyer of the latter. Dis tillers were firmer on the progress making look ing to the reorganization of the property and a belief that the representatives of the outside distilleries, at their meeting in Chicago Wednes day, will advanc the price of spirits. Ameri can Sugar was strong on manipulation, and To bacco was weak for the same reason. In the last hour the market was firm, especially Tor the grangers, Sugar, Cordage and General "Elec tric The net changes show advances of li per cent. There was very little business trans acted in gold today, but the commission is still quoted 4?4 per cent.
