EKE KOBiNOTG- OEEGOanAISV SATTJBBAY; JAUAEY 12, 1893 SUGAR-BEET CULTURE. The Result of Experiments in the State of Washington. The Washington agricultural college ex periment station at Pullman has issued press bulletin No. 4, en the subject of sugar-beets, 'showins the adaptability of the soil and climate of Washington to the production of sugar-beets for use in the manufacture of sugar. As soil "and cli matic conditions in the two afvfelbns of the state correspond very closely to those in Oregon, the report Is or special value. The station advertised to furnish seed free of charge to all who would apply for the came and would agree to follow certain specified directions for cultivation. The uumbenof applications received was much larger than was anticipated, and seed was furnished to 3050 different parties. When the beets began to mature in the early fall, each man who received seed was re juested to send samples for analysis, the tation paying transportation charges. In esponse to this request, beets were re elved from 373 farmers, coming from 101 iifTerent towns. There are ipcluded In iieso 1C6C analyses of seven different va ieties of beets, which give a general aver age of 14.2 per cent sugar, and a purity of 82.6. One variety, the "Vllmorin Im proved," showed Itself to be wholly tin adapted to the soil and climatic conditions. Of this variety, 122 analyses were" made, which averaged only 1L1 per cent sugar. and purity 77.0. Eliminating this variety from the general average, there are 1541 analyses, which give for the entire state the following average: Weight, 22 ounces; sugar, 1B.2 per cent; purity, S3.8. This is a remarkable showing-, particularly as re gards purity. Beets were received and analyzed from 45 towns west, and 5C east of the Cascade mountains. The following comparison will jo of Interest, when we consider the wide arlatlons of conditions between these two ortlons of the state: Eastern Western Wash'tn. Washfn. lumber of 'owns 55 45 dumber of analyses 1,270 395 Av. weight of .beet, oz.. 23 . 25 .v. per cent of sugar... 14.9 13.3 Average purity ..... S2.4 82.8 The Vllmorin Improved variety seems to be a heavy beet, with a smaller quantity of sugar and a lower average of purity. Omitting this, the percentage of sugar is 15.5 in Eastern Washington, and 14.9 in Western, and the average of purity 83.8 in both. The above results seem to demonstrate beyond a doubt that the state of Wash ington, and Oregon as well. Is pre-eminently adapted to the culture of beets for sugar-making purposes. Further experi ments will be carried on next year, with special reference to the yield per acre and cost of production. Seed will be again dis tributed free of cost to those who apply. Applications for seed should be made not later than March 1. A SCHOOL FOR FARMERS Three Wctrfcw of Lectures on. Practi cal Subject m. The Washington Agricultural college has prepared a course of lectures, to be de 'lvered at the college in Pullman, from lanuary 2S to February 16, on practical luestlons connected with agriculture, iortlculture, soils, fertilizers, stock-feed-ng and breeding, dairying, insect pests, ilant diseases, spraying, road-making, ugar beets, etc In addition to the lec tires, there will be practical experiment ng. There will be no text-Took -work or ecltatlons. Each day there will be given 'rom two to four lectures with lllustra ive experiments, and with practical aboratory work on the part of the class rhen that Is practical. The method might be illustrated by the work of the horticultural department, for example, ,thTubJoct!oX sraXting.First,,aOIiec-- jre will be given on the kinds and nethods of grafting, and these will be iV .ustrated before the class. The class will then be set to work at grafting roots, and will be able In a brief time to gain considerable manual dexterity. An abundant supply of roots and scions will be provided and any members wish ing to graft 100 or 200 roots and take them home will be permitted to do so by pay ing for the material say a half-a-cent for each root- Instruction by similar methods will bo given In budding, prun ing, etc., etc In all departments the lectures will be Illustrated with the use of the best scientific apparatus. This school is not Intended for farmers boys, but for the farmers themselves, and they are urged to get some one to look after their farms and go to the school and put In three solid weeks at learning something of practical value. Death of Ralph. C. Geer. Ralph C. Geer, aged 7S years, died at him home In the Waldo hills, Wednesday. He came to Oregon In the immigration of 1S47, and as he once expressed it, "brought every thing nearly, from a paper of pins to a four-foot burr." He brought a bushel of apple seeds and a half-bushel of pear seeds, which went far toward sup plying the Pacific coast with its start of fruit trees. In mention of him in this particular. Bancroft's history of Oregon says: "Ralph C. Geer, was the pioneer nurseryman of Marlon county. He also t&ught the first public school In the sec tion where he settled, having thirty pu pils In 1S4S, all but four of whom were living 30 years afterward." He was ap pointed by the legislature of 1S50, which met at Oregon City, to a position on the statohouse board, It having been first voted that Salem should be the capital. Of the legislature of 1S54 Mr. Geer was a member, his colleugues from Marion coun ty being C. P. Crandall and 2J. Ford. He also composed one of the commissioners for the Oregon & California railroad, to which a charter was granted by the leg islature of. 1SS3-4.
