OPBDS MOKSrSTG OlELBaOHajLKiBJjyAC JASn&L&Y: 11, lc$5 . Er RAINWATER AN.D' SPRINGS" Sometlilngr ATUout the Mature of Both That WU1 Be of Interest. In a recent lecture. Professor Lewis, of Lon don, gave some Useful Information as to the composition of various waters. Sealing with rainwater, he says as the new-bom raindrops fall from the breaking clouds, they are practi cally pure water, containing at most traces of gaseous impurities which the mist has dissolved from the upper strata, of air while Journeying In the form of clouds; and where this rain Is collected in the country. It yields the purest form of natural water healthful to drink; be cause It la highly aerated, free from all Im purity, organic and inorganic. And delightful to wash in because of its .softness and the ease with which the eoap gives a. lather. But a -very different state of things exists in towns. The rain In falling over towns washes rom the air a large proportion of the sas nded organic matters Inseparable from a owded city, and also from the unburnt par ties of carbon which incomplete combustion allows to escape from our chimneys. Charged with these. It still collects more dirt of various kinds from the roofs -of our houses, and finally finds Its way Into our water butts as a semi putrid sludge. In the passage of the rain through the air small .portions of carboa di oxide or carbonic acid are dissolved from the atmosphere, while In slowlr percolating through he surface soil on which it has fallen the water s brought in contact in the pores of the soil ritb far larger volumes of this gas, which Is being constantly generated there by decom posing -vegetation and other organic matter In a state of decay. Under these circumstances; the water be- omes highly charged with the gas and sinks -a through the soil until it come3 in contact 1th some impermeable strata, where it col- cts until a sufficient head has been formed for to force its way along the strata to the sur- ce of the earth, where It appears as a spring. oring this passage through the earth, it has ssolved everything that will leld to Its own Ivent action or to the activity of the carbon irlde. which, dissolved in water, forms a ak carbonic acid, which will dissolve many bstances insoluble in the water itself. prlng water, therefore, differs greatly from re rainwater; tor, wbe the latter Is the jest form of natural water, the former Is illy a compound holding la solution such lm- itles as calcic carbonate, calcic sulphate. ignesic sulphate, magneslc nitrate, sodic lorate, sodic nitrate, silica alumina, etc Of . waters for cleansing purposes, rainwater Is e best and most economic, and next to it me river and surface waters. TIGER-SLAYER-IN-CHIEF. oat to Which a Frenchman Has Been Appointed In the Strait. ' London Daily Telegraph. To those who are aware of the proficiency and urage shown by French sportsmen in their irsuit of big carnlvora. It will be no surprise learn that the governor of the Straits Settle- ents has Just selected a citizen of that asplr- ig nation, M. De Nancourt by name, to fill the jst of "Tlger-Slaer-ln-Chlef" at Singapore. appears that M. De Nancourt has killed 300 gers with his own rifle, against a bag of only X made by MaJor-General Probyn, the well- nown English shlkarrl. Some of our Parisian ontemporarles claim credit for the French na- ion as supplying an official akin to their own JSrand Louvctlor for employment in a British colony. We are reminded by our lively friends across the channel that until M. Du Challlu encoun tered and slew the gorilla we knew nothing as to the existence and habits of that formidable monster, and that the greatest of our living hunters. Mr. Selous, is of French origin. If M. De Nancourt is able to Keep dowp. the number cf tigers haunting the jungles and woods of Singapore and taking toll of the native Inhab itants, neither the latter nor any other British subject will take any exception to his nation ality. The great bulk of the population of Singa pore, numbering altogether nearly 200.000 souls, are Chinese and Malays, who. like the -natives of India, look to white shlkarrls to rid them of dangerous and savage beasts of prey. In the meantime the Importance ot Singapore and of the other dependencies of Great Britain in its neighborhood demand that what Is called "the scourge of the CQlonx"-the tiger ehould be kept within reasonable limits. We htar, therefore, with satisfaction that a Tigcr-Slayer-irt-Chlef tQ the Governor of the Straits Settlements" has been created for this purpose. The commerce of the colony has In creased enormously within the last few years. Justifying the acumen and foresight of Sir Stamford Rallies, whose early death at the age of 47 was a sev ere loss to this nation. The harbor of Singapore Is one of the finest and busiest In the world, being the point of call for vessels trading between Europe ard the East, and between Europe. India and Australia. For its defense several batteries have lately been constructed at the cost of the colony, which the home government has undertaken to supply with big guns. Singapore is Just the spot upon which, in the event of a sudden war, a bold enemy would attempt to pounce. Under these circumstances, we hope there is no truth in the allegations that the big guns promised by the British government have not jet left this country. WOMEN AND SOCIALISM. Leader of the German Chrlstinn So cialists Puts in n. Plea, for Them. There are no polemics over the "New Woman" In Germany, but the sex is advancing its claims to more liberal treatment all the same, and these claims are recognised by some eminent men. Rev. Dr. Stacker, the leader of the Christian, socialists whose aims are, broadly -peaking, identical with these of the populists .n our own countrj advises his party to make a more liberal use of women in politics, as the fcoclaasts employ female agitators with grvat buccess. He says In the Evangeltscbe Klrchen Zcltung. Berlin: "It is certain that, a quarter of a century henee. women will be allowed to take part in all public meetlrvprs w here- subjects of general In terest are discussed. Why should we then raise a cry against them, especially as. Judging from their modest and retiring character, the. Ger man women will take -only a small share? We hbouW t forget that important quvstiens have to be daelded. It we Christians dw not ttxert ourselves to solve the social problem, it wlrl be solved in an un-Chrlstian ox even anti-Christian manner. We men would hardly like to take the whole responsibility. There are so many stuphj men allowed to have a sa in public affairs that it is not easy to understand why brain women bhould be ex cluded. Everything regarding their rights de pends, of course, upon the women themselves. Want of tact on their part, want of delibera tion and self-restraint, would destroy tbeir cau-w. Women are Intrinsically of the same value as men. but they bheukl net forpat that they are of different make-up. If this h remem bered, no objection can be offered to their ap pearance on public platforms, any more than to their appearance as singers, actresses or lec turers." The reverend gentleman nevertheless Is ortho dox enough to object to women sharing the do main of the clerg : "Let her be silent in the conrregllas' Don't let us make her a pulptt preacher, as in America. But In poNtioal meet ings she ought to be allowed to have her say," BUSINESS ITEMS. If Bahy la Cnttinjr Teeth, B sure to u$ that eld and well-tried remedy, Jin.
