Jose Antonio, a Mexican student In the depart ment of niechanlcul engineering at Cor nell, gave a aucresxfiil test of his device by walking a mile nnd a half on the sur face of Cayuga lake. The shoes, which closely resemblo small boats, are con structed of tin, 5 feet .'I Inches long. 1-1 Inches wide and 0 inchei deep. Each contains four separate nlr chambers, be sides the compartment for the foot. The shoes are equlped with collapsible fans, which close as tho wearer stepi forward and then open to prevent the shoes from slipping backward. A somewhat similar footgear for water walking Is described in tho Technical World Magazine for August, and credited to Lieut. Arthur T. Sadler of tho United States volunteer life-saving crew at Charlesbank, Mass. Sadler claims to have made a two-mile trip on his shoes. He says he got his Idea from watching the way a duck uses its feet. His shoes are 4 feet 3 Inches long, 0 Inches wide and 8'4 Inches deep, being the smallest that would carry his weight, 135 pounds. This advantage was more than offset, however, by the Increase In the purchasing power of his wage. The average wages per hour In 1005 were 18.0 per cent higher than the average period from 1805 to 1890, and the num ber of taployea were 30 per cent rreater.
