BH.WMialM.MMM An liniwrtaiit means of conveyance In business ami pleasure, the automo bile 1ms also taken Its place ns an adjunct to the Held of carnage. The German Knfrcr linn Introduced It Into his armlci and Is well pleased with the legi bilities. In tho bush and In the mountain passes, of course, the horselecs carriage would bo useless, but In tho oicn nnd especially where good roads prevail as they do throughout a greater part of Europe the niitoinobllo Is to take the place of horses In conveying offlcers from one part of the field to another. Its uso will cnnlilo a commanding general and his aides to cover a much wider territory than would bo possible with horses, lii all Gennnn nnuy maneuvers tho nutomohllo finds a prominent place. The machines used are heavily armored, carry quick-firing rifles to be discharged through loopholes, and are provided with cases of revolvers for use at close quarters. In nctual warfare even tho wheels would bo protected by armored casings. Our Illus tration, from tho London News, represents a group of olllcers traveling from one point to another and protecting themselves In a hot attack. RAVAGES OP ROSE BEETLE. A llemtrncttra linrct thnt Attacks Hour nil nrniic. During the last few years complaints have been made In Increasing numbers by fruit growers nnd gardeners of the ravages cnueu oy (he rose beetle. This destructive Insect Is called tho rose beetle, from Its at tacks upon tho buds and full-blown flow er of roses, which It burrows Into and devours, but It by no means confines Its attention to this plant. It Is espe tally Injurious to tho bloxHouiH of the grape, upon which It clusters In great numbers, and soon destroys all possi bility of fruit, nnd Tin: unsr. iikctlk. it attneks tho bios (oms of fruit trees, largo and small, ornamental shrubs, flowers, and, In fact, almost ntiy kind of vegctablo growth. It appears in Immcusu numbers, nnd covers the plants that are attacked with u sprawling mass of beetles, full of alarm to tho careful gardener and anxious grower. Tho Invito Is palo brown or drab In color, about a quarter of an Inch In length, and with very long, spiny legs. The enrly stages of tho Insect nre passed underground In sandy meadow laud, whero ns a grub It feeds upon tho roots of grasses and other plants. Tho eggs aro laid by tho female beetles In tho ground during Juno nnd July, nnd tho ;;rubs become ttilt-grown before winter; In the spring they turn Into the pupn (or chrysalis) stnte, and come out as winged beetles In June. Kor about flvo works In Juno nnd July they abound, nnd then suddenly disappear, having .impleted their Mfo coum. not to bo seen ngaln till tho fallowing sum mer. Happily thcro Is only ono brood In tho year. It Is a rcmnrknhlo fact that tho ordi nary Insecticides have llttlo or no effect upon this pest, nnd It will cat blossoms sprayed with purls green and thrive upon them. Many experiments havo been tried, and It Is found that, where Uiowork Is to be dono on a largo scale, the congregated Insects may be repelled by a wash made by adding about three pecks of freshly-slaked lime to n quart of crude carbolic acid In fifty gallons of water. This docs not kill the Insects, but the rmell of tho carbolic drives them nwny. Another method Is to spray the masses of beetles with half a pound of fish-oil soap In n gallon of water. It Is claimed that this will kill nbout l).1 per cent of tho insects. It nets by closing up their tbrenthlng apparatus and canning death by suffocation. On a small scale much may be dono by beating tho Insects, In the early morn ing when they nre sluggish, Into pans containing a little coal oil and then burning them ; or they may be knocked off Into an open umbrella and then de stroyed. Qholce grapes or plants may b protected with netting. FIRST STREET IN AMERICA. Illchnar In Plymouth, Maaa., Is Named After Unlteraltr Town, Leyden street, Plymouth, Mass., the fint street In America named after tho fumous Holland university city, from which the pilgrims came, was surveyed on -Dec. 28, 1021, wys the Municipal Journal and Kuglneer, Tho records state that "so many as could went to work on tho hill, where we purposed to build our platform for our ordnance, nnd which doth command all the plain and the bay, and from whence wo may see far Into the sea, and .might be easier Impaled, haIng two rows of houses and a fair street. So In the afternoon we went to measure out the grounds; and first we took notice how many families were there, willing all slnglo men that had no wives to Join with some family, ns they thought fit, n that we might build fewer houses; which was done, and wo reduced them I to nineteen families. To greater fami lies we allotted larger plots; to every person half a pole In breadth and Ureo MA Jv raawmm,'Jammm Hi. In length, and so lots were cast whsrs every man should be; which was done and stnked out," and this was tho lay hur out of Leyden street. An untlnlHhd plan of this street Is to bo Ken on tho old records of the eonrthouH'. Tho street was laid out In referenco to the water supply, for "tiiero Is very sweeto brooke runnes under the hill side nnd many delicate Kprlngs of as good water ns can bo drunk." Isaac Do Hasloro, visitor from Now Netherlands, gives this account of tlu arohltecturo: "Tho houses are con structed of hewn plunks, with gardens also luolo'cd behind nnd nt the sldas with hewn planks, so that their houses nnd courtyards aro arranged In very good order, with n stockado ngalnst sudden nttack; and nt tho ends of tho street are thrco wooden gates. In tho center, on tho cross streets, stnnd tho governor's houo, before which Is a Miunro Inclosure, upon which for pato rlors (steon-stucken) nre mounted, so ns to flank along tho streets. Unon tho hill they have a large wpiare houso with a fiat roof, mado of thick sawn planks, stayed with oak beams, upon the top of which they have Mx cannon, which shoot Iron balls of four and rto pounds, nnd comiunnd the surrounding country. Now Plymouth Is n town of 10,000 Inhabitants. Main Hreet, tho princi pal business street, below whero It moots Leyden street, Is now a well-macadamized street, with graidte curbing nnd concrete sidewalk nnd substantial buildings on each side. The town Is provided with n public waterworks, sower system, gas, electric plant for light nnd ower nnd an electric rail way, Throughout most of Its history, notable as a fishing vlllnge, thriving manufactories now provldo profitable occupation for tho tow nspcopli. TRUTH AND ACCURACY. Weatrrn World riulma Mint Credit for Vrritclli'. When Sir Walter Scott wns nskod what wns tho proper education for n young mnn ho nnswered: To learn to fish nnd to tell the truth. It Is pofwl bio that tho completo art of angling mny conduce to tho grace of patlenc nnd to tho development of the retlectlvo faculties, but It Is qulto certnln that truth-telling Is ono of tho corner stones of society and the basis of all real character, according to tho Philadel phia Ledger. An nnclent Swiss writer saya of truth, without hyperbole: "Tho study of truth Is perpetunlly Joined with tho lovo of virtue; for thero'a no virtue which derives not Its origin from truth; ns, on the contrary, thero la no vice which hns not Its bo- ginning from a lie. Truth Is tho foun dation of all knowlcdgo nnd the cement of society." Wo of tho western world nre wont to nrrogato to oursehes the virtue of truth-telling. Imgllsh nnd Kurnpean writers constantly speak of highly de veloped talents In mendacity nnd de ception ai "oriental." Home of our merchants and our missionaries who have bad Intlmato dealings with the Chinese whose busltie men mnke ab solutely no use of written bonds or en gagements of any sort to bind them to the performance of their obligations, but rely on the word given, which Is a sacredly kept as any bond could be may be Inclined to smile when the Anglo-Saxon's merits ns a truth-teller are extolled; but In a general way there Is something to be said for the western er's boast. Duo meed may lo given, but the fact remains that in tho west ern world, ns contradistinguished from tho east, more reverence !s habitually paid to tho truth than among back ward peoples, because moro depends on tho prnctlco of truth with us. I.lllle SalUfui-lluu. "Here, you!" growled the fat mm In the corner seat of the crowded car, "my feet nre not there to stnnd' on I" "That's to," replied the quiet of fender; "since you're sitting down you don't need 'em for that purine, do you'" Catholic Standard and Times. liy tho time u man has made enough money to enable his wife to commund elegance In dressing, she hoan't the form that will show off clctuet, Clrcnt Falls, - - - Montana.
