"Then I'll buy you some morn bonks." said Aunt Km, with nu Indulgent smile. "i don't wiiut nny more: I'm tlr.Ml to dentil of rending!" retorted the llttlo rebel. "Why not tnkc your lilryclo nnd go out for it rhleV" Miggoted the woman, who wits llndlng her Nlstor'8 son more tliiiu sho could uiiiiiiige. "I hate the old bicycle," wns the nn gry rejoinder. "Why, Rcglnnldl And It Is so pretty nnd so expensive I And think of your pony nnd the plineton, and nil the oth er tilings I How few llttlo boys nro so i.rAn.iNo now v ut: a woods u ax. fortunntol How ninny of 'them would elvo their eyes, utmost, for it clinuce to ride your pony!" Rut Rcgluuld hnd ifcnrd that nrgu- inont ninny n time, nnd he wiih tired of It, ns he wns of everything else. "Ulin t good does It do mo tlint other boys Inven't nnytlilugV" he denmnded. "1 wish they hud mine, so fur ns I'm concerned. I cun Intro everithlnu 1 wuut, nnd that's the reason I don't WAnt anything. I'm Jm.t tired to death, Aunt Km, nnd you know. It!" Miss Kmlly wiis nr her wits' end. She hnd promUed to tuko caro qt Reginald while his mother, went to Kurope, and hero sho wns, tit the end of only tho llrst week, with nil her resources ex unlisted. .She had thought It would bo no easy n thing ,to ijiniiso the boy, nod Jo, ho hnd positively and persistently declined to be umiued, , "I'm sure I don't know whnt to do with him," sho declared helplessly to the housekeeper, Mrs. Pntterson, nnd that wise old lady replied: "Well, now, niaybo tho child Is tired of everything. Grown people get that wiiy sometimes. I think If I were you I'd pack lilin off to some country place, whero things would be us different ns possible, nnd I'd Just take the brldlo off tbe child nnd let him go. He's been looked nfter too much, In my opinion. It Isn't good for children no more than It Is for plants, to be looking nfter them all the time." And MM Kmlly, belig a sensible young woman, turned this ndvice over In her mind that night, and before nn other week she and Reglnnld were In the country. ' It wns not tho kind of farmhouse that advertises for hummer boarders ! IJless you, no! Miss Kmlly found this one quite by accident, and there was u deur, motherly old womnn, who declared that she hadn't nny room for them not n decent pluco to put them; but who nt least showed them the funniest little winding stair In one corner of a big room ; und when they climbed tho steps there was the dearest little attic room, right under the shingles. Reginald cried out In delight when be found that he could reach up and touch tho shingles while lie was lying In bed ; nnd when he found that the little dress ing table beside the window was a wooden box, standing on four legs and curtained with lawn, he said: "Oh, Isn't that Just too Jolly for any. thing? When I go back home I'm going to have all tbe furniture In my room made of boxes I" I There was a boy In this-family, too a sunburned youngster, fleet-footed, strong, ngllo, nnd ns merry ns the dny Is long. At tho close of tho first even ing Mlis Kmlly heard this new no qtiiilntnncc remark to Reginald: "Well, V0 been kinder loalln' to-dny, Bhowlu' you around j but to-morrow 1'vo got to go to work ngnlti." "What do you work nt, Amos?" wns the Inquiry that followed. "Choppln' and spllttln' wood for next winter," replied tho sturdy little bnck woodsmnii. And then Aunt Kmlly wns stnrtled be yond measure to henr Reglnnld ex claim : "Oh, I'll go with you. I've nlwnys wanted to know how to chop wood." The next morning, not without ninny misgivings, MM Kmlly metaphorically slipped tho bridle off her churgo nnd saw him stnrt for tho woods In tho wake of Amos, cnrrylng tho basket of lunch that wns to servo them for din ner, for they were not coming homo till evening. Ail dny her mind wns filled with visions of n worn-out llttlo figure, drooping wenrlly homewards, and sho wns watching for It down tho rond all the evening. And thero ho came at last, rushing at her like a whirlwind and crying beforo ho was anywhere near: "Oh, Aunt Km, I can chop. Amos showed me how, and I cut six llttlo L trees down, didn't I, Amos? And I found a dove's nest and tho dovo pre tended to be crippled, so I'd run after her nnd leave tho nest. How do you suppose sho learned how to do that? And I'm going back to-morrow nnd my hands are blistered n little, but Amos says they'll get over It. And, oh, Aunt Km, I am having such a good time, and I'm ns hungry ns a, henr.", This from the boy that hnd been tired of everything. This from the pining, fretful child that had confessed that he wns unhappy becauso he could have everything he wanted. Miss Kmlly smiled us she snw how well her experi ment was succeeding. Day after day Amos nnd Reglnnld plunged Into the woods with ax und lunch basket, and evening after even big, when they ciimo home, Reglnnld detailed to Miss Kmlly tho woodland lore he had acquired In the course of tho day, "Wo saw n rimIso to-dny, Aunt Km," ho would cry, "hut wo didn't kill It bo cause It wasn't it poisonous snake, Amos says.. Ho knows by the shape of their heads, and he's teaching me. As soon ns I learn, then I'll know which snakes to kill." And another day ho rnmc home, flush ed and breathless, his eyes shining with eager delight and exclaimed raptur ously : "Oh, Aunt Km, I've becn studying nuts nil d.iy, nnd Amos bus helped me. Thero was an army qf 'em down In the woods, and they carried llttlo pieces of green leaves over their heads llkti flags, and when ouo of them fell down a crowd of them ran nnd helped him up. Oh, there never wus anything like Itl" "Not even tho pony nnd the wheel?" asked Aunt Km, but to her astonish ment tho boy replied : "I don't euro for them any more," Atlnt Km." "Hut you can't olwoys stay here," she suggested, "You'll have to go back to the city soino time, and then you will bo glad to see your city playthings again." "Ho! l'vo outgrown playthings," said Reginald, with tho utmost serious, uess. "Amos found out what was tho mutter with me a great deal quicker than you did, Aunt Km. Ho says that I Just naturally must l busy, and tho troublo with you mid mamma wiih that you wouldn't give me anything to do." "Hut, Reglnnld," cried tho dismayed Aunt Kmlly, "you can't always chop wood nml do farm work with Amos. Your father expects you to grow up mid- bo n lawyer ns ho Is mid havo it fine education." "Oh, well, you know I enn't be n Inw yer," replied the ly. "Amos und I havo It nil inailo up. He's going to tench mo nil he knows this summer, nnd ho knows a lot, Amos does! I never saw any!ody that knew ns much as Amos; nnd then we're Ixitli going to school. I'm going to help Amos through school, hecnuso I have plenty of money nnd ho hasn't, any; and then we're both going to study birds mid animals mid Insects nnd bo grout naturalists." Chlcugo Dally News. Philanthropic Niiiitott. 'An Incident which, the writer de clares, rulsed tho pugnacious sjiurrow bo vera 1 d egret's in his estimation, Is do scnoed in Outing. It shows that the sparrow iuh other good qualities be sides Un sturdlness and telf-rcllauco. For several nys four or flvo spnr roys had visited it certain place on tho roof near my window. They ulwuys brought food for another little fellow, who never tried n flight from the iqiot. Tho visiting sparrows never came einp-ty-bllled. They would drop tiny mor sels of food near tho llttlo sparrow. When It began to eat tbe crumbs tho others' set up a great chirping, and then flew away. After watching this for a few days, I went out on the roof and approached the lone bird. It did not flutter nwny from me, and made no roslstnuco when I picked It up. The sparrow was blind. Its eyes were covered with a rnllk-llke film. Nrcessar- Caution, Husband (In the garden of a country Inn) We have been kept waiting here so long that my .right foot bas gone to sleep.
