Commenting on Benjamin Franklin's

lightning and electricity are the same, a
scientist Bnjfc : "It was ono of the moat
brilliant examples of luck yet recorded.
To nttompt tho extraction of lightning

persons occasionally fly to feather beda,

Emll Jung, a professor In the Uni
versity of Qencvn, says that snails per
ceive tho odor of many substances, but
only when not fur nwny. In order to
provo this It Is necessary merely to dip
u Kiitss rod in n ntrongly smelling sub
stance nnd bring It near tho large ten
tacles of n snail In motion. If It U put
close to these horns, tho tentacles are
violently drawn back. Ah tho nnlmal
perceives tho odor, It chnnges its course.
Snails also smell by means of their
skin. Contact Is not necessary, for the
mcro vicinity of a pcrfumo causes an In
dentation of tho skin.
Au Englishman who Is n large em
ployer of labor has been Investigating
tuo nrguments of those who say that a
worklnginan under modern conditions
becomes at tin onrly ago valueless. IU
has kept a record of all ncctdentx that
liavo Incapacitated his men for throa
days and upward. The peopio engaged
in his omployment nro from 15 to M
years of age, and ho asserts that more
accidents occur to men under 80 than
to those over GO. Ho says: "I would
much rather intrust nn exceptionally
dangerous job to a man over CO than to
one of ISO years of ngc."
Amntour entomologists will bo Inter

spiders' wolm are very beautiful, and
nil aro characteristic of tho species to
which they tolong, so that tholr perma

CHURCH WITH SIXTEEN SIDES.
Tho curious structure shown In tho

of the most peculiar church edifices In
America. It la a sixteen-sided build

sixteen denominations. It was built
as long ngo as 1818 on tho south side
of tho Wlnooskl IUver nnd Is In nn ex

constructed of hnnd-hewed timber. The
building has not been used for publlo

"No mnttor what opinion Is offered,
