Chumbcrlaln, a Democrat, to tho ofllco of governor of Oregon, a strong Republican stnto, Is ono of tho resultB of tho recent political battlo. Four years ago tho Republican par ty was split in twain by factional warfare, which fact gavo some cnuso for tho succoss of Chamberlain, but this year ho faced a united party, and his victory Is a llttlo short of mar velous. Tho New Ago will not attempt to offer n prediction as to tho ultlmato result, but It seems very plain that unless a halt Is called something very Lcrlous will happen to tho Republican party as a political organization in thin stnto. Tho Orcgonlan, ns well na tho lend ing speakers during tho campaign, dwelled upon tho necessity of electing tho head of tho ticket, and tried In vain to convluco tho voters of tho ut ter foollHhncHs of putting n man In olllco Hlmply bocnuao ho was n "good fellow," when ho was a member of an opposing political party. Wo cannot vlow tho ro-olectlon of Chamberlain in any other light than n very rcgrotnblo eplsodo, nnd that It will bo so regarded by Republicans everywhero goes without saying. A Philadelphia man saved a woman who weighed 200 pound from drown ing at ono of tho Eastern watering places tho other day. The report says that ho held her up with ono arm nnd Bwam ashoro with tho other. At las had an easy job compared with what tho Philadelphia man had to do. disposal "What Is lovo?" asks a Philadelphia lady In a pathetic letter to ono of the editors In that city. Whoro savo In Philadelphia could a woman who felt tho need of editorial help in such a matter bo found? Tho lady who got married nftor writing "Tho Memoirs of n Bnby" has Just becomo a mnmma. Sir Cheng Tung Liang Cheng, tho Chinese ambassador at Washington, was a guest of honor and the principal speaker at a dinner given by the local chamber of commerce today. Ho paid an eloquent tribute to the memory of the late Secretary John Hay. He dwelt at length on the in creasing opportunities fqr American commerce in China. Ho said in part: "China and tho United States seem to bo admirably situated for close com mercial relations. With a chain of insular pucseasions extending across tho Pacific, tho United States has its trad ing poBts at tho very gato of China. Even now the cotton mills of tho South depend upon tho China markot for the of their products; for China takes from tho United States moro than half of its total exports of cotton manufactures. Even now the mills ol tho Northwest find China a good custo mer for their flour. "Tho commerce between tho two countries has steadily grown to Its present proportions in spite of all dis couragements and restrictions. With a hotter understanding of each other's needs nnd conditions there is every rea son to bolteve that the growth will bo much moro rapid in the future." CATS IN ANCIENT HISTORY. General At tho national prison congress nt Qulncy an old topic was brought up for dlsciiHHlon anew when n dclegato suggested legislation permitting In turablo porsonn to tnko their own lives and nlso legislation authorizing tho stnto to dispose of tho permanent ly Insane nnd Irredeemably criminal nnd Incurnhlo by putting them to "an cosy death." Passing over tho pertinent obser vation of nnother dolcgato that re fornm nro undertaken to snvo llfo, not tn destroy It, ono may ask whero theso lmmauo advocatex of wholosnlo lolling would begin nnd whero they would stop. "Uso ovory man nf tor hl deserts," wi'h Hamlet, "and who Hliould 'flenpo whipping?" Do claro that tho insnno nnd incurnhlo and hopelessly criminal or vicious .must dlo for tho snko of social health nnd progress, nnd who will ho snfo in theso days of fearful and wonderful tbcorlcH of degeneracy and Us vari ous "stlgnmtu"? Consult Ixmbrosa end Ferrl nnd Max Nordau, nnd very few of us will 'senpo branding as de generates. If thero Is nothing tho mnttor with tho lobo of your car or tho color of your hair, or tho slro and number of your Angora nnd toes, something Ih suro to bo wrong, In tho opinion of tho "exports," with your political or Hoclal or literary opinions. Modesty not tho most conspicu ous trait of our scientific criminolo gists. They aro an cocksuro ns they nro merciless, Every distinguished man of tho ngo, except Alfred Austin, has been weighed nnd found wanting ly tho criminologists, And how froo ly tho term "lunatic" Is applied to persons who nro a dozen yenrs In ad anco of tho mass Is, or should be, notorious. Theso advocates of gcntlo deaths and lothnl chambers would croato a social wilderness and call It progress. Torrlblo as tho problem of ino sunmergcij is, society will prefer to gropo on nnd stick to Its present religious nnd moral precepts, regard less of tho solemn wnrnlngs of tho social pathologists Wo aro not yot cu "tho other sldo of good and ovll." Miles Says Disclosures Aro Not Now to Him. Kansas City, Juno G. GonornI Nel son A. Miles, who is horo on his way to Colorado to address tho State uni versity etuudents, said tonight: "Tho disclosures about beef nnd othor packing houao products now bo ing exploited are no nowa to mo. I know it seven years ago. I told what I knew then. Had the matter been taken up at that tlmo thousands o( lives would havo been saved. The adulteration of food products is tho co lossal crlmo of the times. "I bellovo that 3,000 United States soldiers lost tholr lives becauso of adul terated, Impure, poisonous meat. There is no way ot estimating tho number of solldors whose health was ruined bv eating Impure food. I know only of its harvest among tho soldiers nnd can only guees how many lives it has cost tho republic. "I havo a barrel of testimony on tho eubjrct in tho way of ntlldavits that I collected whim I mado my investiga tion soven yenrs ago. At that tlmo I could hnrs secured tho testimony of 100,000 men that tho canned beef sold to the army was Impuro, ndultorated and unwholesome." Sousa Accuses Phonographs of Pi racy and Injury to Music. Washington, Juno 8. At the hear ing on tho copyright bill today John Philip Sousa, the composer acd band conductor, testified that in every ono of tho catalogues of tho manufacturers of taixing maenmos was a list ol some twenty to ono hundred of his compos! Victor Herbert followod Mr. Sousa, speaking, ho said, for many brother composors, for the provision in tho bill intended to protect their rights. WATER DELAYS TRAFFIC. Two of tho elided took placo bet Keen Qulnn and Hlalock, and are each fully 300 feet wide, with from one to seven feet of debris deposited on the tracks. The worst elide, however, occured at a point three miles east of Hlalock, where a heavy cloudtmrat came down the canyon and carried out three bents of the railroad bridge, cutting out a ditch 35 feet in width and 18 fee deep. A force of 250 men was tent out from this place in response to the demands of the situation along tho main lines, while 60 additional men were dispatch ed to the Columbia Southern line at Ulgge, where steady showers have pre vailed all day, delaying tho trains, but causing no washouts of the tracks, So far as known there were no fatalities.
