THE NEW AGE, PORTLAND, OREGON 1 Topics of I the Times 1 1 Erory mnn wants n squnro dcnl In llfo. Also n good dcnl. If tho coal Htrllta should bo protrnct cd, many a cellnr will contnln n hns bin. "Wenlth IcHRPtiB linpplncso,' says Mr. OnrncBlc. IIow'll yon svnp, Mr. Cur neglo? Pity tho poor llttlo Illegal child tlint had uotlilug to Buy ubout It and Ib In no wlno to blnnio. Mr. Kockufcllur may not be as pop ular oh Mr. Carnegla, but his nanio Is polled mora phonetically, anyhow. Booker Washington's Tuskegeo In stltute got endowments, half a rail' Uon at a time. Booker Is a wonderful money-raiser. 3. Plerpont Morgan now tats but one meal a day. In tho opinion, of Rus sell Bag he has at last reached years of discretion. That Brooklyn banker who has for years maintained two complete family establishment must have had a great fondness for home life. The Moros are reported to havo shielded themselves behind tholr chil dren. If tlioy hud believed In raco ulcldo they couldn't havo done that Who says romance Is dead, when tho son of a Central American Presldcut Is willing to movo two or three nations to marry tho little Washington girl ho loves 7 President Castro has resigned tempo rarily, ostensibly on account of his lienlth, but undoubtedly because tho Vouezuolan ltd was gottlng too hot for comfort A certain comedian Is said to havo forgotton a little Investment that has netted him 950,000. No one save a real humorist could do such a scream Ingly funny thing. Mr. Carnegie strenuously Insists that he was tnorely the klssee, but as the woman In the case testifies that bis kiss "left nothing to be desired" be must have responded satisfactorily. Somebody has written a book on The Art of Investing In Wall Street" lie has probably produced It In tho hope that ho may be ablo to nnko a llttlo niuchneodcd money out of It Tho czar has sent word to tho pens ants that ho Is too busy to recclvo any mora of their delegations. Tho tlmn may not bo far away when the peas ants will bo too busy to recclvo the czar. Tho Secretary of Agriculture gives out tho pleasing aNHuranco that there will bo no more crop failures In tho United States. Ho will bo gottlng him self disliked by tho bulls In soma of tho markot places If ho Isn't careful. Emperor William told somo sculptors not long ago that ho had tried on suits (f ancient armor, and mil round that It was a mistake to tiling tlujj Uw horoes of old wore as big as tho moil 6r ioday. As ono consltloro tho evi dences of u higher present c'lvlilratton, there Is roii uon to think that tho minds us well an tho ttodloM have expanded. It Is a weariful tank, that of tho Btutoxmau. Directing tho affairs of n critical people In trtilivd a dreadful Job. For your stiitoHiimii In forced to shift, to trim, to Nldestep, to carry water on l)tli nliouli!orn. Even In absolute coun tries tlm Htatosiimu'tt Job Is dllllcult In republics It Is gradually growing to bo awful. It Is not only the shifty and douuiodealliig stntesiimn who fluds hU Job dllllcult. Ho at least has only tho people to reckon with and not his own conscience. Hut tho conscientious statesman must find his Job awful. "A bad second best," said John Morley, tho experienced statesman, "Is tho very best obtainable In politics." If popular government In Russlu Is to meet with even moderate success It will be necessary for thut country to put every dollar It can raise for a good luuuy years Into educational facilities. Of the 120,000,000 of eople In the em pire 00,000,000 are uuablo to read. Ac cording to official statistics the num ber of persons In schools of all grades In Russia Is 1,500,000. It takes a good deal of energy and strugglo In America to keep our public affairs going as they should go and many costly mistakes are made. Yet In this country, with n population of two-thirds that of Russia, wo havo over 1.1,000,000 of our children and young jcoplo In schools, ten times as many as Uuiodn, and only 0,000,000 of our people, ten jht cent, are Illiter ate, as compared with, tho 00,000,000, or 80 per cent, of Russians. "Roosting" Is a slang word that fits admirably Into American speech. There Is no other that Quito conveys tho moaning. Tho word "Jolly" Is another bit of colloquialism useful In Its way. Rut there Is u wldo difference between a Jolly and a boost To Jolly Is to flatter. To boost Is to put forth n sincere effort Tho Jollier uses his Hls ouly. The booster acts from tho heart The latter Is sincere. Ho be lieves, therefore he boosts. He baa n good reason for boosting. That which he boosts deserves to bo boosted. Take the man who boosts his town. It 1 tho center of tho universe to him. Ill property is there. Ills home. Ills fam ily. Ills future. Even his grave. He boosts his town because It Is his town and becnuBo ho believes It" In worth boosting. He Is an admirable fellow, tho booster. Botnotlmes he may appear to bo a "knocker." Tho knocker la tho opposlto of tho booster. Ho knocks be- causo ho Is a booster. Ho wants but ter government Ho knocks In ordur that ho may boost When tilings lire put right ho begins to boost again. Ono of tho beautlos about boosting your community, for IiiHtnncc, Is tho reac tion of It When you boost your town you boost yourself. And boosting makes tho booster happy. A news paper writer says boosting Is tho soul of work. That Is n fine definition. Work, offort of any sort without en thusiasm, Is but a tread-mill, a dreary round of commonplaces. There Is no soul In It Work without soul In It Is drudgery. Re a booster. Put soul Into effort And this boosts In behalf of your own town, of your church or your cause whatever tt may be will become a constant series of happy ac complishments. The tendency of education la more and more to forsee the needs of our civilization and provide for them by special training In schools. Noteworthy examples of this tendency aro the schools of social service recently es tablished In tli re American cities. These aro Simmons College in Boston, now in Its fourth year, the School of Philanthropy founded by the New York Charity Society and the department of social science which has recently been opened at the University of Chicago. Just as a special kind of Instruction ts provided to prepare men and women to be lawyers, doctors, preachers, teach ers, nurses, these now Institutions seek to educate professional philanthropists to cngago In systematic work for or ganised charities, to conduct "settle ments" among tho slums, to work as secretaries to doctors, teachers and so ciologists who aro dealing with social problems In poor, crowded sections of cities. The old method of education was to give a young person general culture, and then Icavo to time and chance the direction of educated .UK enta toward some special kind of use fulness. Heretofore "slumming," set tlement work and other such social terries) hare been left to the emotional Impulse and good Intention of the ama teur In charity. Tht new schools of charity hive shidttd the practical needs of the sociologist and aim to turn out not theoretic economists, but doers of the word. For n long time the new profession will not be overcrowded. The labors of philanthropy become more complex and extensive every year, and thpro Is plenty of room for young men and women In tho ranks of tho now scientific nrmy which Is sot ting out to fight the enemies of social ordor and prosperity. Vlahakln Lantern. Tho puffer or rnvoll fish has tho pow. or to distend Itself with air Into tho shopo of a globe. Japaneso living In tho Hawaiian Islands mako of tho sktu of tho big puffer found In Hawaiian watora nn odd und grotcsquo lantern. A circular opening Is nmdo In tho back, through which tho light can bo placed ami In which Is sot horizon tally n hoop or rim by which tho lan tern can bo HUHpcmled. Such a lan tern mado of a big puffer's hkln may bo a foot In diameter crosswise ami llfteeu Inches In length, and what with tho head of tho llsli appearing ut ou end mid tho perked up tall at tho othot and tho Him projecting at tho sides this DhIi skin lantern makes n very curloui object Now York Herald. A Shifting Lutiurk. In tlio first years of navigation on Western waters, says tho author of "Early Steamboat Navigation on tho Missouri River," pilots were forced to use all sorts of signals and marks to decide their courses. Ono hud n cus tom of running a certain crossing, if he came In at night, by the aid of a dog. The animal belonged to a family liv ing in a house at the foot 'of tho cross ing, directly In the course of tho bond. Whenever a boat was coming, this dog ran out to tho bank, always In exactly the same place, which was In Hue with the channel, and barked his loudest. The pilot ran toward the sound of tho barking with the utmost confidence. Unhappily, tho dog ono night took n notion to change his stand, and barked a llttlo higher up. Tho next morning tho boat was n hojx'lesa wreck on n sandbar Into which the pilot had run at full speed. Until I.biikuht to Salt. Old Lady Were d'yo como from? Tramp (who has seen better days) .
