In much that Is written concerning tho mutter of diet thero nro so many sweeping statement, Impossible rules and foolish conclusions that It Is no wonder that many persons brush tho whole subject aside au being too com plex for them. Tho trouble Is that thero aro too many persons trying to enforco their own personal Ideas on this subject Thero aro tho "crunks" who must have something to be cranky about In any enso, and a "crank" who has picked up a llttlo scientific Jargon and thinks he has cured himself of something Is n very persistent person. Then thorp aro thoso who havo really been cured of some ailment by a diet that happens to suit their own Individual cnsei. They go about forever afterward finding tho sumo ailment In everyone they meet and offering (ho same remedy. Thero nro also tho one-food people, who go about seeking what not to devour, and who would rcdiico every ono to wholo wheat or pecans. Wholo wheat and pecans are excel lut foods and do much good, but so do hlaik-heart cherries, lobsters and corned beef and cnbhage. If John dis covers that ho linn n iilghtniaro every tlmo hu eabi lobster ho does well to, renounce that dish, hut ho need not rc notiuco It because Dick has tho night mare. Again, ono hears much of tho good Judgment displayed by those person who rest for nt least half an hour aft er eating, nnd It would, undoubtedly, ho well If tho world wero so arranged that wo could nil do so, but unfortun ately tho buslncHS of tho day rushes along, mid most persons, nt least un til they como to their evening meal, must go to work as soon as they have eaten. It Is trim that this fact constitutes a strong plea for light and easily digested meals In tho daytime, leaving the prin cipal ono till the work Is finished. It Is absurd for persons who have not mado themselves somewhat famil iar with tho chemistry of foods to try to talk loarnedly about their action on tho humau economy, and It may bo taken as an axiom that within tho In dividual capacity (which can bo learned only by Individual experiment) a va riety of diet Is hotter than a monotony. A dlot that Is too strictly limited to a few things trains the stomach to adnpt Itself to those fow, and It Is In danger of losing Its power to digest outsldo of that list. Youth's Compan ion. RISE OF ILLINOIS CAPITAL. Nlirlnicflftlil'a Klrat Court llotisa Win of !.! nnl Coat H'J. The Rangamon Itlvcr of Illinois Hows through the heart of a garden as tlch and fertile as tho ono which tho Kuphrates watered In tho far dis tant days of Adam nnd Kve. Tho County of Sangamon was formed out of n vast, verdant solltudo pf SCO wjuiiro miles. Threo commissioner were chos en to set In motion n county organiza tion of government, and they met, with out delay, at tho cabin of John Kelly on Kprlng Creek, a tributary of the Sangamon. Kelly had wandered Into tho State In 1818 it ml had built him- ILLINOIS STATE CAl'lTOI. self a cabin ou the edge of a green bordered stream which he had named Spring Creek. The Sangamon ofnolals sent forth their report tegardlng the establishment of n temiKirury county 6eat of Justice and agreed that "It should bo called by the iiniiio of Sprlngllehl." A con tract was mado at once for a court house of rough logs to contain one room ample for court, and with plenty of space for the ollhvs of county olll clnK who were already nanuM. Tho court houso was completed In twenty four days, .and paid for In the sum of forty-two dollars and tVfty cents. As It was evident that a constable could not exercise his functions without provision for the wifekivplng of offend ers, n Jail, to cost eighty-live dollars, was next projected to furnish proper support to thu court house by holding In chock n population not yet arrived, but hourly expected. The.se expecta tions were not so absurd as they seem, and wltlilu two years tho county com missioners decided upon making tho teuiH)rary county seat permanent. Courts In the log quarters were rude, but Justice was administered with n generally even hand and tho early law yers, lMwnnLs, Kane, Thomas and oth er, were won whose learning and ablK Ity were hardly surpassed In later and moro pretentious court. Thero was an Indcscrlbablo quality about these early administrations of law and equity that somehow mako them of untold Interest to-day. Abraham Lincoln appeared In tho Sangamon County about 1831 and tho broad footprints ho left during his so journ of thirty years tna easily bo followed. For sir years he was, by turns, clerk In n country store, mer chant, soldier, postmaster, student, ora tor, and last a full-llcdgcd lawyer, lilt by bit, as tho artist designs n choice mosaic, this man was developing n character whoso bold outlines wero to stand out, nn Illuminating beacon to ull mankind. In 1837 Lincoln becamo a citizen of Springfield nnd began tho practlco of law. Ho was elected tho samo year to represent Sangamon Coun ty In tho legislature, and was also at tho head of a project to remove tho capital from Vandalla to Springfield. As every other town In tho State was desirous of the samo distinction tho scheme seemed doubtful of realization; nevertheless It was accomplished. Whllo the delegates' In cbnvontlon as sembled were hero and thero discussing merits among themselves, Lincoln gain ed tho floor nnd called for n vote of thoio In favor of the removal of tho capital from Vandnlla. Thero was hut ono dissenting vote Vnndulla's. Then, without delay, or discussion, ho called for the voto desiring to remove tho cap ital to Springfield. lie was answered by such n majority as gavo tho legis lature the prompt duty of passing a bill for the removal, nnd thus Spring field curried off tho prize, as sotno rus tle beauty has been known to do In n social contest whero n dozen belles wero concerned. Tho pleasant' hunting-ground of John Kelly became In those sixteen years a capital destined to be the guardian of those sacred trensures of our Nation, the haunts, tho home, and tho tomb of the Illustrious Lincoln. When tho various provinces of Aus tralia wero federated Into one com monwealth and the federal franchise was given to women the newspapers wero greatly concerned ns to what woud becomo of tho .babies while their mothors wero out voting, says tho Now York Tribune . "They never thought how tho babies wero getting on on the 3tU other days of tho year," said Miss Allco Henry of Australia to tho New York Equal Suf frage Association, nt tho Hotel Astor, "but their (os!lblo fate ou that ono day out of 303 seemed to give tnem great concern. "Hut tlio matter bottled Itself very simply. Wo found, on tho first day when wo enjoyed tho federal franchise, that there were plenty of women politi cians ready to stay with tho babies whllo their mothers went out nnd vot ed. They wero organized nnd detailed for that very purpose. Hut many of the mothers did not think It necessary to avail themselves of such services, for there wns no law against taking the babies to tho polls. I myself saw perambulators going down the streets by tho dozen on election day and soino women actually marked their ballots with their babies crowing and gurgling In their arms," Kouuil nu Aiii'lrol Itluv.
