An Extinct K.u'E ,-One of the most remark
able races that over inhabited the earth, is now
extinct. They were known ' as the (iunnches,
and were the aborigines of the Canary Islands.
In the sixteenth century, pestilence, slavery, and
the cruelty of the Spaniards, succeeded in totally
xtinguishiiin; them. They are described as hav
ing been gigantic in stature, but of n singularly
mild and gentle nature. Their food consisted of
barley, wheat, and gont's milk, and their ngricul
! turo was of the simplest kind. They had a reli
gion which taught them of a future state, of re
wards and punishments after death, and of good
and evil spirits. Thoy regarded the volcano of
Tenerille as a place of punishment for tho bad.
The bodies of their dead were carefully omhalm
ed, and deposited in catacombs, which still con
tinue to be an object of curiosity to those who
visit the Islands. Their marriage rites woro sol
emn, and before; engaging in them the bride was
fattened on milk. At the present day, these
strange people are tolally extinct.
What it Costs to Kkbel. One of the ed
itors of the Solum (Ala.) Messenger, writing
from Tuscaloosa. eii' :
' ' "A little business in tho Court House It'll mo
to inquire into the financial condition of this
portion of tho country, and I learn that Sher-
iffs' sales aro becoming so very ooiuiuou that
almost no purchasers are found fur the valuable
lands and other property exposed for sale. A
gentleman informed me that some twenty far
mers had beeu sold out lately, their lands bring
ing less than one dollar per acre. A sad in
stance of the roverse of fortune produced by the
war was mentioned in the case of old Mr.
Prewitt, of this county, whoso estate, was sold
on the first Monday in this month. At tho
breaking out of the war, he was tho wealthiest
citizen of Tuscaloosa county. Ho owned 300
laves, and large tracts of land, lie had large
ntns of money out at interest, secured by mort
gage on negro property and land. Ho was a
homespun, economical country man, who bought
everything at the lowest prico for cash, lid
. ' paid his physician's lulls before tho doctor left
. the house. When General Criixtou came to
- Tuscaloosa ho took from this old man some
forty head of horses and mules, all his money,
provisions, etc., which was his first calamity.
Next came emancipation, which swept his slave
property. Next oatne the breaking up ot ull
men to whom I'rewett had loaned money,' or
, for whom he stood security. Finally, an exe
cution was levied on his property for a few
. thousand dollars, and till his real estate was
old under the sheriffs hammer for $G00.
Tub Hricks of tnia Pyramids. Prof.
Unger, the celebrated Viennese botanist and
paleontologist, has recently published some re
marks on the bricks of the ancient Egyptians,
especially those of the pyramid of Dashour,
which was built about 3,400 years before our
era. Oue of them being examined through tbu
mioroscope by the Professor, he discovered that
the mud of the Nile, out of which it was made,
contained not only a quantity of animal and
vegetable mutter, hut also fragments of many
manufactured substances, whenoe we may con
clude that Egypt must have enjoyed a high de
greo of civilization upward of 5,000 years ago.
Prof. Unger has been enabled, by the aid of
the microscope, to discover in the bricks a vast
number of plants which at that time grew in
Egypt. Tho chopped straw, clearly discerni
ble in the body of the bricks, confirms the de
scription of tho manner of making the latter,
such as we find it in Herodotus and in the book
of Exodus.
