Would it not be well for the cmiuty commissioners at their next meet ln,r, to take tame steps in regard to repairing the court home t It is in a very dilapidated ' oondition, and a disgrace to the county. The outride paint and sanding are nearly all washed off by storms. The well ii not fit to be' used, and the yurd is in proper condition to attract the at tention of the city board of health, being cover ed with saw dust, ashes, barrels and other rub ish. Taking it all together, we are inclined to think a few hundred dollars could be laid out very beneficially, as at preseSnt the need of it has bvcome a subject of oommon remark. Literature. Among tho great number of trails running through that country, the one taken by the convict was lost. The pi'tv ran out of provisions and were compelled to sub sist on pine nuts taken from the pine cones or burr of that country. When the party got to the Descbnttei river they procured a quantity of fresh water clams. These they ate raw, roasted and made into sonp. They then came book to the Fort, got a new supply and started again, traveling about twenty-five miles tbe first day, nntil they met a party from Eugene City going to hunt a surveying party out in that country. Both parties camped together. , Mr. Funk and one of the party from Eu gene took their guns and started for a short hunt, when they met Hauxhurst taking a wag on and team to the Fort. 1 hey stopped, talk ed, and each told where he was going. Jones, of Cottonwood, while out buuting some two or three Week ago. at a place about 40 miles northeast of Cotton wood, and atiout 4(J miles east or Jacksonville, Ogn., known as Lost Prarie, when about one mile southwest of Lost Prarie, saw some bouet, w hich at first be supposed were deer or bear bones, but on close inspection did not know what they were. Going a short distance fur ther, be found a human skull, the teeth of which were perfect, with tbe exception of one of the lower back teeth, which was nicely filled with tin foil or competition. Mr. Jones is of tbe opinion, as are several others, that the person while alive had a blow upon the beau, whether by falling timber or human agency, will p'ubabty remain in doubt until the lust day. It is the general opioiou of those who bave examined the skull that the person was 23 or 30 years old, bnt Dr. Ream thinks be was 40 or SO years of age. Tbe skull is now at Blaske's stole in Cottonwood. After Mr. Jones returned to camp, ba supposed be could 'easily And the piece where the remainder of the skeleton lay, and in company with Messrs. Johnson. Kabo and Crawford, started to God t, but tbe parly being in a harry to get home, failed to fiud tbe place. No cloo of identity is known, but macy suppose it may be a Ger man ssddler known as Joe, of l'lio-nix. Ogn. ho while out bunting wub party oo Siskiynsj Mountain somo four years ago, started alone to camp, and has never been heard of since. Search was made fur him at the time, as his circumstances did not justify any belief of bis intention to leave clandestinely. Mr. Jones thinks he can find the place again, and would cheerfully go with any recognising friend or relative lo the spot. Yrtka Journal. 17 If yoo want yoor life insared. go to Beth R. Corvullit Gazette. Shower ok Metkohs. Next in grandeur and sublimity to a total solar eclipse, or a great comet stretched athwart the starry heavens, is the great metorio shower, such as was wit nessed here in November, ISM. On this oc casion, from two o'clock till broad daylight, the sky being perfeotly sereno and cloudless, the whole heavens were lighted with a mag nificent and imposing display of celestial fire works. Aragn compares that not less than two hundred and forty thousand meteors wero visible above the horizon of Boston, on the morning of tbe 13th of november, 1833. This display was seen all over North America. A similar phenomenon was witnessed by Hum boldt at Cumaua, South America, in 1799. A comparison of the epochs of appearance of these great showcrijhas led to the discovery that they are periodic, their returns being sep arated from each other by a third part of a century, or some multiple of this period, and are periodical appearances of one grand me teorio shower. Prof. Newton of Yale College, who has de voted much time to the investigation of the periodio character of these showers, finds that a prodigious flight of meteors, tho most impns. ing of lis kind will make its appeurauoe. proba bly for tbe lost time in this oentnrr, on the morning of tho I3ili or 14 ill of November, next. Only thirteen of these great showers are re- corded between the years 90.3 and 1833. Such a rare phenomenon awakens a deep in terest among all classes of persons. Prepara tions to observe this sublime spectacle, for sci entific purposes, have already commenoed in Europe. Let no one forget Tuesday and Wednesday nights, November 13th and 14th. BACKS Out. The Bntfulo Commercial, which went into the Philadelphia trap with the New York Timet, has, like tbo latter, backed dear out. "We cannot." it says, "be incor porated in tbe Democratic party, as it existed during the war ; neither are we prepared to accept its materials ami assist in rebuilding it. We are willing and auxious to on operate ear nestly and faithfully In the way and to the end agreed upon at Philadelphia, but in no other way and in no other end." We copy the following items from the Ore gon City Enterprise I Am Oil Mill. Auinng other new enter prises which promises to be undertaken in this city speedily, we are informed upon good au thority that heli re long au oil mill will be in operation. There are great inducements for such an establishment, in connection with the new paper mill. The cultivation of flax will receive a great impetus upon the commence ment of this enterprise. Drowned Lewis Lenpnlt, a German em ployed in the Woolen Factory at this city, was drowned on Thursday, 18th, in the river at tins city, ilia mind had beeu wauilerntg for several days, and he probably committed sui cide.
