hc (Oregon statesman. SALEM, MONDAY. AUG. 27, ISfiCi. THE PttKSIUKNT'S LAST SPEECH. The Philadelphia Cnuvcutiun lias tent cud gratu Intory ami hopeful greeting to An drew Johnson, irunilsing him' support and ex IwrtiiiK him to "he firm." Tho ringing re sponse comes buck from tho President, "that, having taken lii stuml npnn the broad prinoi ple of liberty and the Constitution, there is nut power onougli on earth to drive hi in from it." Thin speech in a choery "All"! well" from the vigilant watchinmi who ii guarding the citadel of freedom, through tho troubled night of revolution. It in a graphic. ;descnp tiou of the fierce conflict that in now raging between thu foes and friends of our iwititution, nml ii inch a picture of tho batilu at could be painted, only by one who is in the "thickest of the fray," watching every adianeo and re trcnt on tho field, and himself bravely breast ing the fight. We nommend the speech to the attentive consideration of our leaden, as one befitting tho occasion and creditable alike to the head and heart of him who made it. In its statesmanlike views it is worthy of the President, as in its patrolisin and in iti kindly spirit toward the conquered South, it ia worthy of tho man. Bitterly ns President Johnson opposed the treason that with arms in itt hands sought the nation's lifo, and deeply as he was wronged in person and property by its adher ents, he is now willing to concede, with every man who has any faith in his raoe, that ammig mo mapses. at least, rebellion arose from Ignn- ranee rather than from a guilty intent. De manding sufficient guarantees for the future, ho is rendy to forgive tho past, entertaining, as Mr. Litioolu said, "malice toward none, and chanty for all." Tho Individuality of Mr. Johnson is alriliiugly conspicuous in this speeoh; with rugged good sense he breaks through all conventionalities, and strikes immediately at the root of the mutter in dispute, assuming re sponsibility for all that he has done, and re senting, with proper spirit, tho personal cal ninny and abuse that have been heaped upon him. This fact has caused tho radical press to affeot to sneer at tho "I, my, and me" con tained in Iho speeoh, thus showing the con temptible weakness of tho cause they advo cate. We Imagine, however, that they will yet hnve abnndnnt reason to fear this "person al pronoun of the first person," at which they are now so touch disposed to be merry, as it stands for a very sturdy, obstinate noun, in the independent oitso. We coufess, that we rath er like this spirit in Mr. Johnson, which has been falsely called egotism. It shows us that wo have in the Presidential office not a mere automaton, but a man of inflexible will and indomitable courage, scorning hypocrisy and owning his personal responsibility tn the people in all he door. Like Anthony, he is "No orator hi Drill ui was, but a plum blunt man." We can snrely pardon lack of grace and . refinement, when as in this oaso thu want of culture only shows to greater advantage the native strength and honesty of the man. This speeoh of the President is eminently American in its tone, revealing the hardy self reliance, combined with abiding faith iu the wisdom of the people, which is so characteris tic of the American mind, and which has ele vated ua from a condition of colonial vassalage, to our present proud position among. the na tions of the earth. In fact, Andrew Johnson is a true "representative man" in tho United States, aud is a living example of tho excel lence of our Governmental system, having ris en by snccessive steps from the lowest rank in in society tn the highest office iu tho gift of the nation, makiog his way by the aid of others when be could, but going resolutely onwnrd nny-bow, thus establishing the truth of Epi bharruus's proverb, "Tho gods sell all good things to men fur their labors." Such a curse of training has had no ten dency to softeu the asperities of bis nature, but has rather strengthened the individuality of his character, making him just thu man for this hour of need for Liberty wants strong, resolute men at her side now to guard her from the assassin strokes of seeming friends. The Presideut iu this speech, expressing his usual confidence in tho people, oalls npon them to rally to bis support. And it is our steadfast belief that the call will not not be in vain. The people will come, and the Philadelphia delegation is but the van-guard of a grund ar my of reinforcements. Even now they are furbishing their nrinnr, and the great States are resonant with tho din and hustle of prepa ration The bronzed and scarred veterans of the war will oome to rescue the Gelds of their glory from the robbers and jackals that are prowling for booty and prey among the van quished. The soldiers of the Union have, with tho bayonet, pinned nil the stars to the flag, and they will not suffer them now to be torn awny by congressional enactment. They will not he cheated of the peace anil Union which their prowess and blood have won, by the jugglery or tricks of politicians. General Grant, their former leader, is already "keeping step" at the President's side with tho old dog ged determination to "fight it out oa this line." The army will certainly sustain the President, for it is not in the nature of brave men to sym pathize with tho vindictive fanatical spirit which now controls Congress. This fall, there will bs a second "Graud Uprising" in the ' North in behalf of the Union, and the earth will soon be shaken by the tread of a countess boit whose slogau will be the death-knell of the radioal faction which now legislates for us. "We sre coming, Father Audy." W a Still Lives ! Hoyakin, the "woman's rights" man, was in town the nther evening. It was surmised that, lilts Elijah of old, ibis saintly individual bad been translated bodily to that better kingdom be has so often prated about. lie was reported to bare been io pur suit of soodry and divers editors. Alas f we are prepared for the chillers,, the small-cough, the whooping-pnx, Claik's Web-Foot Tonie, or any other usual affliction of mankind, bat for Hoyakin "nary." Let Tony beconfisca ted, McPberson and Schwalka Inveigled, but as for us, Boyakin, forbear ! Our gender is neither neutral nor ambiguous. We are not a woman, either by instinct or education, and " WfMiH rather wr-p toese theefrve, Tiisn win thee lo destroy." Not Dead. It wajjistid some time ago in the Statesman that Dr. 8. R. Uncles, well known about here, was dead. This is a mis take. The Doctor is alive, and is engaged in bis profession at Cbsnibrrsburg. Pa. Polk Co. The election in Polk came off - quiet J to the 20th. Dr. JtfiVrrs, democrat, is reported lo have been elected by some 33 ma jority. He goes to the Senate ia place of Jobs) Frater, deceased. FAY OPI'ONKS TUB SKW PAUTl". The Oregon Reporter (Copperhead, and lit tle Fay) opposes the new party. A'ter referr ing to the cull of tho Democratic Congressmen, it says : But w fail tn see in it any new idea advoca ted, or any measures suggested that have not been urged upon Ihe people by thu Democratic press incessantly ilnring and sines the late na tional troubles. It has been urged times in numerable, "as vsseutinl tn national union, that wh must maintain unimpaired the rights, tho dignity und equality of the States, includ ing the right of each State to control its own domestio concerns, subject only to tho Consti tution of the United States." This has been the fundamental principle of National Dcinno racy ever since its organization ss a party; and we fail lo see any reason why Democrats should lend their aid tn tho establishment of a new party for tho advocacy and maintenance of principles which are already a part nf their non, mm lorm uie inundation stone of the Demnoratio platform. If the object nf the iuii.i-uuoii is io nrmg togctner men who iu dorse the above principles, why form a now party and go through ull the labor and formula of perfecting anew organization I Why not nullum evasion nor wiin tnu uemwratia par ty, if Iheso are tho objects they wish to achieve! During its administration of the nf falrs of our Government, embracing a period of more than sixty years, ours was the bappi est and roost prosperous land cn earth. The treason of Burr, the attempted insurrection of nuay, arm tne threatened nullillcatiou of Cal houn were all suppressed by simply adhering to the Constitution, and without shedding one drop of blood, and we were triumphant in two foreign wars. Under each and all of these eiroo instances, under Democratic rule, the rights, the dignity and equality of the States were maintained unimpaired. Why not, then, WO ask again, not will, llm Durmioruli,, nurlv if the perpetuity of these cardinal principles of our Government is what yon aim to secure 1 Then why organize a new party ? In point of numbers thu Democratic party never was so strong as it is now, nor so well orgauixed. Our name is a synonym for our free institutions, and while other parties have ri'en, flourished awhile, and then died, tho Democratic party has continui'd to live, became its principles are those of eternal justice, and its life of the Constitution, and whilo the Constitution lives the Demooratio party oannot die. We do not claim infallibility for the Dem ocratic party, but its principles aro in fallible. Then we would say to the Dem ocrats, cling to the name of Democracy as you would to its principles ; and tn oil true patri ot who love the Union and revere the Consti tion, wo say, as we agree in principle let us act together. TttlC'lliNA. The name of this disease in pork, or rather the worm which is the disease, has been known to tho Chinese for oeuturies. Ap Poy, a learned Confucian, who resides in Sun Franoisco. informs tho correspondent of the Stockton Herald that every Chinese meat Healer is laminar with tlio various poisoned diseases of pork. which so astonishes Europe and America. Ho said, "Triclinia is the combi nation of the spotted yellow fever, the black spot fever ami the worm fever ; hence its name, three diseases in one The pork raised in China, npnn high ground, is subject to the yellow spotted lever. The hot. murky grounds produce the black spotted fever, and "iho worm was originally produced by tho putrid human remains which float nlong tho banks of the many rivers in China.' Hogs, in huge droves, have all been inuocnluted from one, with other disease. In fact, when attacked tho disease is contagious. Any person eating of either kind of diseased hog meat, is surely attacked with Ihe disease the hog was pivsoucd with as they eat the meat. He Ap Poy contended the spotted fevers prevalent among the people of Europe, weru nothing mure nor less than the hog disease. He quoted many cases iu Asia, Europe. South America, Mexico, North Ameri ca, uud throughout the niiiiierons islands, where, of a sudden, these various diseases have broken out. He further said that a composit ion of urscnio an I lead was used to euro the spotted fevers iu men and hogs. Verdigris was used lo euro trichina, and in his district Ihe doctors never foiled io cure. Hero Is something for our medical men to practice np nn. Were this brought lo the Itiintvlcdgn of any European Medical Society, how Iho world would ring with the discovery ! Consumption op Wiiihkv. It appears by official reports that the amount of whisky con sumed annually for drinking purposes, is es timated by Iho co.: mission as averaging u gall on and a half per he nil to the whole popula tion of Iho United States. Large as this may appear, it is shown that the consumption iu Canada and the other British provinues reach es over a gallon aud a quarter a head ; while in Kus.iu it averages no less than two gallons to each loan, woman and child of the popula lion.. Iu Great Britnin, where .the common people do not, in general, drink spirits, the amount consumed uiiunuliy varies from eight tenths lo a gallon per capita. But in that country beer is the more universal popular beverage, and no less than 22.(MH.0(K) barrels of ale uud beer nro consumed ever year whereas uot more than 5.0(K).0fHJ or GVKtO.OOO barrels are produced in the United States. FiiuillTFl'L Aucidknt. A frightful acci dent recently happened at a foundry in Scot land. A heavy casting was being made, win n some of Iho liquid escaped, and splashing on the hands arms of the workmen, caused them to quit their hold or the laiMe, which immedi ately capsized, aud the whole of Ihe contents, soma three tons, was thrown on the workshop floor. All Ihe men rushed for their lives to the door, hat it could not lie opened at once, and they turned in desperation, and actually ran through the molten inelal. One fell as he ran, and was so disfigured that be was scarcely lo be recognized, and bis life, with that of one of tho others, is despaired of. How to Cl'HK A Felon. As wo often see friends suffer with these troublesome things, wa publish the following cure for them, which we have beard highly recommended; the char acter of Ihe paper copied from, (Journul of Medicine.) adds further lo this recommenda tion : "As soon as the parts begin to swell, get Ihe tincture of lobelia and wrap the part af fected, with cloth thoroughly saturated with the tincture, and the felon is dead. An old physician says he has known it to cure in scores of oases, and it never fails if applied in season." HuasiA. While the Powers of Central Europe arc contending wit each other for su premacy. Russia is patiently extending hef em pire in Ihe East, and is fast pushing her armies to tho very boundaries of British territory in India. A late Arrival from Europe brings news of n battle iu Ihe Bucburia and the total defeat of Ihe Prince nf Bokhara. Bucharia is one of the most fertile and independent prov inces in Central Asia, passesat-s a population of a couple nf millions, and is evidently des tined to be absorbed by Russia, which is pa tiently subduing all the tribes in those regions. pETKOLKl'M FOB ASTHMA. A Correspoo dent of the Country Gentleman writes to that journal: "I have a son. six years old, that had the asthma in the most distressing form for three or four months when he was one or twoyearsold. We tried everything we could hear of without getting relief, till we were told to rub his neck and breast with petroleum, and we used it both erode and refined, experieno ing very speedy relief and a final aud perms nenl cure, lor be bos not since had a returu of it, and be now a very healthy child." Franz, of the Brandon (Miss.) Republican says; Dukgliis Jerrold calls women's arms "the serpents that wind around men's necks, killing the best resolutions." That class of serpents can just w ind around our neck as much as they please, and if any ol the young Indira believe what Jerrold says, they can come and try t lie experiment nu us. We'll risk thu conse quence There was a prodigious celebration In Phila delphia, nu the 4th of July. The Herald's Toronto correspondence snys that the Canadian mind was considerably ex ercised by the discussion of the merits and con duct of Ihe different officers nf the Queen's Own, who had command of the military ope rating against the Fenians a', and near Fort Erie, during the recent invasion. A court of iuquirr bad been demanded by Colonel Book-' er, who received so much blainc at first. A singular case, has just oomo before tlio French tribunals. A young girl eleven years of age attempted successively thu life of her mother and sister for the sole purpose of drink ing their blood. The uliild has bean osninin ed by competent physicians, and proved to lie attacked by the strange mania of anthropopha gy. Her extreme youth leads the physicians to hope that her oure may he accomplished. ''Important Will The will nf the late Ren.
