Th Honolula Advertiter gives long end
Interesting sooount of the burning of the chip
Hornet, and the subsequent snfl'erings of the
passengers and crew. As it contaim many
particulars not before published, we give tome
extraoti :
( After reaohiog longitude 117 neat and lati
tude 17 north, Capt. Mitobel decided to head
for "Amorioan Qroop," located, according: to
Bowdltob, in latitude 17 uortb, longitude 133.
80 weat. The boat spent several several days
cruising; over the position, bnt found ne signs
of land. Thai far they had endeavored to
keep in the usual track of California-bound
dippers, in hope of meeting a passing tail,
Bnt failing to find land bore, they beaded for
Hawaii, distant 1,200 miles.
At tbii time tbey had no meat, and nothing
bat the bare bonei of the bam and the canvas
it waa rolled in, with their regular two gills of
water. Pieces of this oanvaa and the staves of
a butter keg, which had a inline relish to them,
erved at the main stand-by, while the leather
of their boot waa scraped off, aoaked in water
o at to make the leather enff. This aerved ns
their aoop. For desert they eat pieces of cot
ton ibirti and handkerchiefs. By tome acci
dent there waa a supply of tobaoco in the boat,
whiob aerved to allay their thirst, and may
have been a principal means of preaerving their
Uvea. Daring the entire passage the utmost
discipline prevailed, with watches off and on,
ai regularly a on the abip. The boat leaked
badly, and all hands took turns bailing to keep
her afloat. With the strong trade winds, heavy
seas and squalls, blowiDg at times almost a
gale, this was no light work. .
On the thirty-eighth day, four flying-fish
kindly flew into the boat. Tbeso were seized
nd divided into fifteen equal parts, and each
ate his share raw. The next day another (lying-fish
came aboard, which waa ulto cnt into
fifteen pieces and divided around. On the for
tieth day a very small fish flew aboard, which
was given to the captain, as ho was suffering
most for want of nourishment.
. On the forty-first day, Neal Turner, an in
valid seaman, who bad a severe abscess in l he
bip, gave op discouraged, and lay down on the
bottom of the boat. The .reft of tho party
were in good spirits, but weak, expecting to see
land in four or five days. There waa no grum
bling nor diasension.
On the forty-third day out, at 11 A. h., tin
cry of "land-bo" was given, and the lofty sum
mit of Mauna Loa cheered the furnished vov-
agers. The land was sighted a day or two
sooner than they expected. On nearing it, a
flag was waved on a nolo, which was seen by
those on shore, hut it was supposed to lie a
fishing parly. When approaching near tho
breakers, ou Laupiihocnoe, two natives awnm
off to the boat, and jon finding the destitute
condition of the crew, cliruliru lute it, shook
banda with every one, earing, " How do you
do," took the oars and brought the boat safely
to tbe beach.
None of the parly were able to aland up, and
on trying to do ao fell over perfectly helpless.
and as nnable at infants to walk alone. The
natives crowded aroond, women vicing with
tbe men, took them up in their arms and onr
tied them all ashore to the house of Mr. Jones,
polo agent of J. C. King & Co., who received
them with the greatest ..uneas. The natives
brought all.kinds of frnit and vegetables, such
as potatoes, bananas, cocoa note, eta., for the
starving men, but Mr. J. deemed it not prud
ent for thorn to eat these, but made them tea
and broth and nofsed them with the zeal of a
Florence Nightingale. Next morning they
were allowed to eat a' little more freely, but
still with great caution, their host providing
tnem more at each subsequent meal.
Word having been sent to Hilo, the Amcri
oan Consul there, Capt. J. Worth, sent three
boata and brought the sailors to tbat port,
Capt. Mitohell and the Moasrs. Furgusnn pre
ferred to remain at Laupahnehoe till they
gaioed more atrengtb. At llilo tbe Consul
provided for all their ncoesaitica and bestowed
much oare on them.
Tbe whole party In the long boat reached
land safely, after having been forty-three days
at sea, on sbort allowance part ol the time, and
less allowance most of tbe voyage. What is
more remarkable, there waa. no sickness, nor
any of tbe diziiness wbiob Is so often the ao
eompaniment of persons kept in a starving con
dition for so long a time.
Weak in His Hkad. The Auburn .Stan

tbe news arrived that Johnsou had split with
tbe Union party, and tbat Seward approved bis
eoarae, jubilant Democrat met a fellow named
Ben Moss, eitiien much esteemed in llioso
parts for the' probity of bis conduct and the
dryness of his jokes. " Hallo, Ben !" said the
