She (Oregon tatcn. SALEM. MONDAY, JUNE 18. IrjOtl. Tim Dallkh and Umatilla Citiks. Dalles city i nno of llio m-ntest and brst look- ing towns in Oregon, and at lliii time nno of the must prnsperoiii (nyug nothing ulmut the tomporary inunnronienoe of high water) It l deptincd in time to become a very large plnoi-, ill grout ooinineroiul importance. It itnndft in the gateway from theOreatSalt Lake and Colnmia river Imsirj to the Pacific Ooean, and the Inlca of tlie lea, and the trnfllo of the Indira. Nature lias done the work for the Pallei.und a sriruwd business foresight will en able iti property holdert and hnsiocss men to conro a future and permanent prosperity for their town. The city contain an active and enterprising population, with a moiety of some. of the beet families in Oregon. Umatilla i looated about eighty miles above tlie Dulles and jmt above the outlet of the Umatilla river. It ii much nearer lome of the mining re gions east of the mountain) than any other supply point on the Columbia river, and tills fuct hits given it a large trade and considerable prosperity. The citizens are active, wide awake business meir.and will make a great con test to secure all the great'trado to the Owy heauind Buiae basins. We wish both these ri vals.! an J all other town on the upper Colum bia river, great prosperity, for as they grow, so will all the rest of the State. BpnuMiFlELD. This seems to bo a favorite name for brisk, prosperous, growing cities. Springfield, Massachusetts, is the embodiment of New England thrift; Springfield, Ohio, is one of tko most flourishing interior cities of the Iluck vye State ; while Springfield, Illinois, is not less celebrated for its beauty and prosperity among the cities of the prairies, than for its being the home of so many distinguished American states men, ranging from Lincoln, Douglas, linker, Shields, Logan, down to many others of less fame But Springfield, Oregon, is what we intended to wnto about. It is u new town ou the Willamette river, a few miles above Eugene. It now already boasts a flouring mill, saw mill, with extensive planing and other machinery, and several new houses, but the first steps have been taken to erect a large woolen factory at an early day the building will be erected this summer. It is the western terminus of the Oregon Central Military Wagon Road, and possesses water powor equal to what we have in Salem. Sugar pine and superior cedar abound upon the river a few miles above, and it is contemplated by the mill-owners to fur nish a superior quality of dressed lumber for tho Snlem market. Success to the Springfield of Or egon and its enterprising projectors. Matiiknv'sj Wiiahf We made a visit on Sat urday lust to the now wharf now in course of con struction at the foot of Trade street. The wharf will front 178 feet on the river, with a depth of fifty foot the wliolo length. It will run hack on Trade street 302 feet, including the two-story warehouse. The warehouse in front will be 46 feet front by 60 feet deep and one story in height. The warehouse for general storage, in the rear, is 48 by 7.5 feet, and two storios high, and will be connected with tho water front by railway and cars. The whole improvement is to be of the most substantial character, the front wall being ten feet at the bottom, narrowing to four at the height of fourteen feet, and of solid masonry. It will cost from soven to eight thousand dollars, and will be a great credit not only to the enter prise of Mr. Matheney, but also to the Capital city, and a valuable improvement. Tub Ale Brewkiiy. Very few of our citizens are aware of the many improvements being slow ly but constantly added to the city. It will be news to must of our readers to learn that Westa cott & Co. have recently erected and just put in operation an Ale brewery, a short distance above town ; where tho best quality of pure malt ale may be had for a reasonable price. We have tried some of the ale made at this brewery, and fur all the uses of a malt liquor wa believe it to be far supe rior to any Imported articlo, for the reason that it is a purs article, and entirely froe from the drugs which make up most of the other ale generally aold. . The Markets. We have no change to make in the quotations of last week, except in wheat. Good wheat will not bring more than sixty cents cash iu Salem at this time. Wool is ready sale at 31 cents cash for the average grade. The crop of wool is quite heavy this year, but tho home de mand by our Oregon factories will about tako up the entire clip. We hear that the Umpqua valley will produce nearly six hundred thousand pounds of wool for the prcsnt year. This is a flattering evidence of the growth of our 8tate. New Ciicrcii Ri'iliiinu. Kev. Mr. Croaa man's new church building, now being erected opposite the Congregational church, for the use of the Evangelical Association, promises to he a very handneme structure. The frame is now np, upon a good solid rock foundation (according to Scripture), and the steeple erected. The Christian Church society have laid a solid foundation of stone masonry for their new church, which is te be erected this season. Boi'ND for 8ANTIAM. A party of Santiam peculators, capitalist) who own in the Morning Star, Aurora, and New York, left town last Friday morning, for the mines. In order to make a fa vorable impression at Quartzville. one of them blacked his boots before starting. If he don't get bis "Webfool" watered, or do the cooking for the party before he gets back, we are mistaken. Oregon City. Rev. P. 8. Knight') church, Congregational, has recently been furnished wilh a new organ, bought by subscription and the pro ceeds of a festiral lately held. The Woolen Factory has sent an order east, by telegraph, for enough machinery to fill np the present buildinf three more seta. Tho company tn the market for four hundred thousand lbs. of Oregon wool. Strawrkrry Parties. Strawberry parties, that is, expeditions to the country in wagons, car riage), omnilmses, and on foot, to procure the lus cious fruit, have been the order of the past week. The crop of wild strawberries is very large, and the juveniles and youth of greater yean are mak ing good use of the strawberry season. Destok Co. Jl'RlLEE. The Oeuff. informs us that the Union men of Corvallis had quite a jubi lee orer their glorious victory in that county, at which Judge Chenoweth, Col. The police statistics show that 18,500 persona have been Arrested In Washington the past t eur, and of these 17,400 were for drunk enness.
