Ilia horses, harnesses, feed, together with 150 bushels of oa'a. were consumed. The fire is supposed to have been caused by two bora playing with matches iu the barn the preeediiisj evening. The Waoon Road Uhantb. Thioiigh the persistent efforts nf Senator Xesiiiitli, the Ore gon Central Military ltoad has received from Congress the deficiency nf laud along the west ern end of Ihe road which had previously been taken by settlers, amounting to many thou and acres. This will considerably augment the value of the Company's stock While attending the State Convention, we noticed General Palmer engaged in the very praiseworthy effort of getting petitioners for grant of lands to the w agon road from Port land to the Dalles. We believe that Xesmith has already reported a hill to aid the last named road, hut desires a little recommendation of it from the citizens of the State, which w ill soon tie furnished him. Tbo Dalles and Portland route is one nf the most important in the State, nd oaclit to be liberally aided. Tha road ia necessity, in order tn secure mail transpnrta tinn with the up Columbia country duriug the winter, when the Columbia is frnxen ovei. While on this subject, we would suggest to the Willamette Valley and Cascades Road Company, and to the- Salem and Des Chutes Koad Company, and the Rogue Itirer and John Day Wsgon Koad Company, that it fa possible fur them to obtain grants of laud to each and all of their roads, if they will prepare the pa pers, etc.. all right, and then send them to tha roan who pitches in and works for such lowtl iuteresta of the Slate. Oar delegation has not been idle at Washington, and if the local in terests of Oregon are not attended to, it is uot their fault. The people must let them know what is wanted, and give thrtn the reasons for - it, before the matter can be brncght to the at tention of Congress. Union Gain. Civil Mights Hill has lioionio a law iu a constitutional maunor, mid President Johnson assures the pcmplo tluit it must ho enforced. V aro not tlio least surprised at lliia. Andrew Juhn son bus always counseled obedience, to the lawa and Constitution, and set a nohlo example In his own conduct. His prompt decision in this mut ter allows Johnson to be a noble, true man, and fully determined to do what bo swore to do 0 eciitu tlio lawn. Whother good or bad, tbo Civil Itigbts Hill will now be enforced, if It ia pussiblo to do so, until it is either repealed by a subse quent Congress, or annulled by tlio Supremo Court. This decision of the President will only strengthen tlm cuntldonco of tbo people in tbo purity and integrity of their Chief Mugislraiu. Two classes of pooplo aro now disappointed. First, tlio Copperheads, who hoped that Johnson would violate his oath, and refuse to enforce a bonstitulioiially euaetcd law, and thus get up a general row ; second, the Radicals who desire lo continue the war on Johnson, and who will now bnvo the wind taken out of their tails consider ably, and deprived of any further excuse toubino a President whu refuses to agree with them, or to be driven from the Union party into tlio anna of bin natural enemies. Of the two parlies, it is hard to tell now which fe. Is the sorest. A Good Ai'FointMi.nt. Dr. W. B.
