The Nuvy Department in announcing the sentence, severely censures the court-martial, and says it was the duty of Cra ven tn have encountered the Stonewall nt any bnzarrt, and if through negligence or any other fault ho failed in any one partioulnr to do Iub duty, then he did not do Ins utmost to capture and destroy the vessel, and is liable to the pen alty of death provided by Inw. It will be ro meinbered that Craven declined the challenge because bo feared if his broadside did not sink the Stonewall at once, alio would ram and sink hiiu. The Department says the lirsl rule of naval action has been to take great risks for the accomplishment of great ends, but the ver dict of the Court means, do not fight if thero is a chance of defeat. C. P. Huntington, Vice President of the Pncifio Kailrond, receiv ed to day from the Treasury Department one million dollars in bonds on account of the sec ond division completed. The House Pacific liiiilrirad committee met to day, but will not take up matters in earnest till after the holi days. There will bo strong efforts to allow the Missouri and Kansns line to follow the di rect route up Smoky Hill to Denver City, with land grants, etc., which the Omaha Company will contest. Bnwen. enniiuatiding. The Journal says it tins reasons to believe the rumor true, and fears the particulars will prove still more revolting. Col. Samuel Thomas at Vicksburg has been telegraphed that the Government will not re cognise the law of Mississippi prohibiting; colored men from leasing or holding lands, but will protect the Irenlinen in that right. Alabama has copied the spirit of tho Missis sippi law affixing such risks to owners leasing property to colored people as tn amount to a prohibitum. Major Hastings has organized and dispatch ed tnn colonies for Brnxil. One sailed from Mobile, December 4th. and other from New Orleans. The Mobile Register says: The colonists are among tbe mutt worthy and respectable citizen. The Ico gorge which has been formed during lhe cold weather in the river above St. Louis, broke loose on llnirsdiiy and its movements crushed and oth erwise damaged about twenty steamboats ly ing along the levee, involving a loss of about $213,000 partially insured. tol. Hogarth putting the town of Thorn asville Georgia, under mnrlial law, as the mil- mcipul government is unnlilo to protect the lives and interest of the inhabitants or prevent attempts of assassination upon unarmed Uni ted Stales soldiers. St. Louis, Deo. 10. The hiss of steamboat property by ice on Saturday, including cargo, to., was about a quarter of a million of dol lars : insured lor one hundred and hliy thous and. Bishop Simpson was elected President nf the new united Com mission, Dr. Thompson, Vice President, and J. K. Shepperd and Mr. Abbot, Secretaries. KiOT Amono tub Firkmas in San Fran Cisco. San Francisco, Deo. 16 A most dis graceful riot occurred among the firemen yes terday afternoon. The riot commenced be tween Howard No. .1 and Knickerbocker No. 5,. at the corner of Mexican and Third strreets. They were separated, hut came to gether again nil Fourth street, where Monu mental No. 6. joined Howards in an attack nn the Knickerbockers. All ham's set up a terrific yell and in less than a minute the street was filled with excited men fighting with any thing that they could lay hands on. Pistols were fired in every direction, cobble-stones were torn up from the streets and thrown wherever a head presented itself, and for a few moments tbe scene was fearful. No. 5' Com pany were driven away from their engine, and in fact tbe three engines Were for a time un protected, owing lo the members bring en gaged in the disgraceful melee. Edward Flaherty tbe Assistant Foreman of No. 5. whn was doing all that lay in his power to quiet the disturbance was shot through the arm and badly wounded about the back of his head by a blow with a club nr stone. One citizen who was looking on, received a pistol ball tit his foot, s; d the nnmbrr of cuts, maims and bruises inflicted with spanners, cobble stones and clubs were too n'linerons to particnlarize. If this is tho immutability they .vaunt, let. them make tho most of it; their right there shall bo none to dispute. Let them have undis puted that palm of infamy. That Andrew Johnson 1s a radical Ab olitionist. 1G. That no man who had a hand in the oruel war should liavo a hand in our civil Government. 17. That it would be prudent in the Dem ocratic party to put none hot Ihnso figured successfully in the Into " failure " of a war, upon their gubernatorial tickets. 18. That the Secessionists were right, that the Unionists were right, and we nre all right (hie)! By tho blessed St. Patriok, hurrah for the great Dimnieoratio Party I Origin ov thu Fenians. Tho Fenian Brotherhood have been in existence for the past eight years. Its founders were two of thu Irish exiles of 1848, Colonel John O'Mahony and Michael Dnheiiy, both of whom nro well known. The Inte General Corcoran wns in conjunction with them, O'Mahony wns con nccled with this movement in 1848, and though a mere voiith, he influenced iinuut 1,500 of the peasantry in tho onunty of Tipperary, where ho belonged, to encamp on the hills nf thnt place. Tho military surrounded ami dispersed them, and O'Malinny fled In France, where the plans for the future revolutionary organization were formed. After residing in France for a few years, O'Malinny oame tn America, where, aided by Corcoran and Doheney, he started tho Fenian Brotherhood organization. For five years tbo Brotherhood maintained a semi secret character, spreading rapidly through tho United States, Canada and the British Prov inces, with a regular system of communication. Three years ago a Nutionol Convention was held in Chicago, and the purpose of the or ganization was boldly avowed, nil J tbo spread nf the movement was greater even than be fore. The leaders of the Fenians nre men who liavo taken up downright revolution as tho business of their lives. O'Mahony, the Head Center, is acknowledged, even by his enemies, tn he highly cultured, nf a chivalrous nature, and a man of great determination. The cen ters nre nearly all wealthy Irish merchant,). Many Catholic clergymen are in its ranks, and nnt very long ago a General MoGroarty, Pres ident of tho Fenian Military Council, went arm in nrm with Father Wiget, the Superior of the Jesuits, to bend a Fenian procession in Washington. General Meagher is n member, and the late Genera! Smith of the Union army was a member at the time of his death. Legal Tbkdbk Notes. The total amount nf legal tender notes in present circulation is $078,120,120; a sum nlmnst beyond the com prehension of the ordinary intellect ; mid yet, sn vast is our population nml so pressing are its requirements, that in the general dispersion of money, its presence is liar ly felt. It is on ly when we come to reflect how universal is the possession of money in the United Stales, and huw profusely it is squandered, that we be gin to realize the nation's wealth. Indians. Four hundred Indians from Fort Humboldt, lately arrived at ltnnnd Valley, as prisoners. The Mendocino Herald says thnt the singular custom of killing their female off spring as soon ns born prevails among them while in captivity, and considers it the result of some superstition.
