Khali Oregon have an agricultural paper? Will tlic
farmer) of the State support u paper devoted exctu
slvely to the intercut of agriculture and kiudrcd sub
jectsr We desire to hear from tlie farmer and others
interested throughout I lie State, In reply to tliune ques
tions, within the next two weeks. It In proposed to Is
lie inch a paper from the Statetman Job Udlcu, about
the flint of October, ho an to liuve it rcudy for distribu
tion at the State Fair. The services of n competent
man have been avuured to bike the editorial charge of
the paier, if It la luiued. The paper will be second to
no other similar publication on the Tacllio coast, and
be well deserving of the support of every farmer In Or
egon. The farmers of the Slate ought to have and sup
portapuper devoted exclusively to their interests, as
there can he now no doubt that Oregon will noon be
comc4he great granary of the Paclllii. Wo ought not
to leave our agricultural Interests any longer In the care
of a rival Stale. Wo do not, however, desire to argue
the necessity and propriety of such an enterprise at this
time. Wo greatly prefer that the farmers will argue
the matter among themselvesand report to us Immedi
ately. Let the' farmers of every neighborhood, npon
toeing this notice, talk the mutter over among them
selves, and see if there Is a general feeling in favor of
aupporting a good agricultural paper one that will
have no connection with politics or politicians, bnt be
devoted entirely to the interests or soil culture In Ita
widest signification. Farmers of Oregon, let us hear
from you at once. Let as many as can write to us ful
ly and freely, giving their advice and suggestions.
Am Interesting History. As an induce
ment for subscriptions, I bo Astoria Oazeite says it
has engaged one of the earliest American settlors
on the Oregon coast, an intelligent and entirely
reliable person, to write a complete history of Or
egon settlers and settlements, their influence upon
each other and upon the natives, and foreign set
tlements among them, from about 1036 to lH,"it),
giving a complete political, religious, and social
history of the country during that period, which
will bo published in the OautU. occupying from
one to two columns in each number.
Gone East Ovekland, Senator Noiniith left
liero last Tuesday morning for Washington City,
going orerlnnd by Idaho, lie will not return to
Oregon again until in May 1867, after the expira
tion of his terra of senatorial servicoa.
lit" The Orrgonian says that an Oregon Steam
hip Company, with a capital of $.'i00,UOO, is soon
to bo organized in Portland, for the purpose of
putting a line of steamships on the route between
San . Francisco, Portland, and Victoria. This
would be a move In the right direction.
t7 The Firemen filled the new cistern on Com
mercial street, with the use of their Engine, in
about three hours and a quartor, notwithstanding
the cistern leaked hadly.
We learn that the new Fire Bell, costing about
$650 when at ita place, and weighing over one
thousand pounds, is expected by tho next steamer.
In the Meshes of the Law. Portland is
troubled with vexatious law. suits about the title
to ronl estate. A certain set of lot-holders were
recently adjudged to pay about forty thousand
dollars in greenbacks to some of the " Jarndyce"
heirs: and now another suit Is pending before
Judge Wilson at chambers, who has removed his
judicial existence to the "Emporium," for the pur
pose of settling a little dispute about another
block and the improvements thereon, " with tho
appurtenance thereto bolouging or in anywise
appertaining."
The Daily Mail. Tho Orovillo Record states
that Mail Agent Gaskill has contracted with the
California Stage Company to carry tho mail from
Lincoln to Portland for $1,350 per day, until the
Post Offico Department can make permanent ar
rangements. Found. The body of Miss Mary Horry, niece
of Mr. Arrigoni of Portland, who wai lost with
the Ill-fated Brother Jonathan, lately came ashore
at Eureka, California, distant ninety miles from
where the Jonathan went down. This is a re
markable case.

principal merchants of that town-are ordering-

tJT A law suit has been commenced at Portland
for the purpose of testing the validity of tho act

FIRE. F.d. Statesman : The dwelling-hnnse of
Virgil U. Newsom, on Pudding river, in Marion
county, was consumed by fire on or about the Jutli
inst. The owner was absent out harvesting
and having no housekeeper at home, some ruiscre
ant, for plunder no doubt, tired tho house to con
ceal the robbery. The loss was about one hun
dred dollars, over and above the house, which was
not very costly. Perhaps some of Jeff 'a wander
ing rebels may have been prowling around, and
aeeing the plnce unguarded, rubbed the house,
and then fired it, guerrilla-like. Observer.
Dessaris Lvxchimj- On Saturday it was found that
the new cistern, which the urciaen bad labored so bard
to Oil on Friday, was about empty . Upon making ex
amination, a hole about two Inches in diameter is found
in one corner of the excavation for sediment, iu the bot
tom, through which the water has escaped. As this
place was covered up during the Hlling it is taposaiul
that thejbrrak could have been cut out by the falling
water, and as it extends down entirely through the
brick, the presumption is that some low-lived scoundrel
made the hole there belore any water went In. This
preemption is increased by other facta dcvelo,ed since.
The man that would d such an act of meanneaa de
serves to he chained to the bottom of that cistern ud
then let the liremen pump in on una fur about three
hours.
TaKASURi Siiii'XHNT. The steamer Sierra Nevada

$r The steam dredger, which has been built for the
ciiy nf Portland at a cost of Itj.OnO, is said to now work

Dr. IIenrv. In the list nf those who per
ished hy the wreck nf the Brother Jonathan,
w notice the name of Dr. A. G. Honry, Sur
veyor General of Washington Territory. The
decerned win well known on the Pacific coast,
Dr. Henry passed the last winter at Washing
ton, and was on his way home when the cas
ualty occurred that onst him hit life. In early
life he resided in Illinois, and there made the
acquaintance nf Abraham Lincoln ; that ac
quaintance ripened into a friendship that con
tinued uninterrupted until death. But few
men exercised greater influences with the late
President than Dr. A. G. Henry, and this in
fluence was uniformly exerted in favor nf tho
Pacifio const. Had President Lincoln lived.
Dr. Henry would have been assigned to one of
the Bureau at Washington that nf Indian
Affairs, in which he would have been vastly
useful to nnr people. The death nf the Preti
Went destroyed tho Dr's ch uncos for prefer
ment, and he was on his way back to resume
his duties in Washington Territory, when death
overtook him. A ihnvring the relation that
existed between our friend and the late Presi
dent, we state the fact that during our stay nt
Washington last winter, we icarcely ever saw
the President that he was not in coinaany with
Dr. Henry. On one occasion, when the Pres
ident and Cabinet appeared in the Senate of
ficially, the President walked down the long
aisle nf the Senate, arm in-nrm with Dr. II.,
followed hy Secretary Seward and the remain
ing members of the Cabinet. When seated.
In position was next the President. On the
day when the vote wore counted in the House
nf Kepresentntives, fur President and Vice
President nf tho United States, Mrs. Lincoln
turned nut in state ; nnd was escorted to the
lent in the Arubanstijor's Gallery liy the unob
trusive gentleman who hailed from Washing
ton Territory. On that occasion Sir. L. wns
the "observed of all observer," nnd numer
ous were tlie inquiries a to the name and stan
ding nf the genlleiimn who acted as her escort.
These thing in themselves have bnt little im
portance, but now that an old friend "sleeps
the ilt-ep that know m waking," we name
them a showing the regard in which he was
held hy the President. Mountaineer.
California Union State Convention.
This Convention met at Sacramento un the
lGth and terribly disappointed the Copperheads
hy a harmonious session. J. G. McCallam of
El Dorado was made permanent Chairman.
On Inking the chair, Mr. MoCallnm ad I rested
the Convention at I rngth. He contonded for a
continuance of organization in the Union par
ty. Ho tnul those in favor nf breaking np such
organization should and must he put down ;
the motto must lie : "stnnd hy the Union or
ganization." The bolter of Sacramento and
banker of San Francisco were ruled out the
bolter not offering delegations from bnt a sin
gle county. S. W. Sanderson ws Dominated
lor Supreme Judge.
Deplorable Accidknt A young man in
the employ nf Heury Mnrlin. owner of the
Klickitat saw mill, named John E. Araat was
accidentally shot and lived bnt a few bnnrs af
ter receiving hi wonnd. Young Arant was
engaged in inddling a hnrse in front of the
house, when a ion nf Mr. Marlin passing thro"

Chased by a Wolf The Mountaineer
lay that on Friday last, the little son of T.M.
Ward, living on Three Mile Creek, was chased
hy a wolf and made a narrow escape. When
the animal got too close, the boy had coolness
enough tn make a fight, and so between run
ning and fighting managed to reach home in
safety. Parties went oat afterwards, and jadg-
ing by the size of the track left in the road, he
must have neen a huge monster.
The Late Murder The Grand Jury,
empanneled lately at Idaho City, have been
discharged without finding a hill of indictment
against Patterson for the murder nf I'inkhain.
Eleven were for indictment and four against it,
twelve being required tn bring in a bill. It it
understood that Judge MeHride will Immedi

in naval circles that the United State steam

class at the Lancaster, and will probably he
used its flagship opon her arrival. She has
dime good rervice during the recent rebellion,

Salt Lake City. Aug. 16, 1 o'clock, P. M.
The repair party are now at the break between
Sweetwater Stuliou and Platte Hridge. They
have an opcrater along who came into circuit
this morning with the instrument at six o'olnck.
He reports the parly fourteen miles west ol
Platte Bridge aud they worked all night at the
break lately made. Considerable wire hat
been carried off. The Indians were in sight
watching them, and fears are entertained that
they will be attacked.
Crops and Mikskts. The yield of the new crop of
wheal is being tested by threshing; and in conversation
with farmers during the past week we le.iru that It Is
turning out much better than expected. Owing to the
low stage of water in the river now, It is not probable
that much of the new crop will Qud its way into market
for considerable time. In Tact there will not lie such a
demand for it, as during the same period of 14 year.
Ctililornla has a very good crop of wheut this year, and
will not call on Oregon for much, except iu the way of
speculative re-i,hipmeiit to China aud Australia. Walla
Walla, Urande Sonde, Powder Hirer and other valleys
cant of the CiHca lcs h ive nude an advance on the pro
duction of lat year, and will doubtless aid Oregon ill
supplying the mines. And while there will no doubt be
very remunerative prices for the present crop of wheat,
we ought not to expect the bandwirue round prices nf
hist year. The following are Portland quolations for

VEGETABLE UNIVERSAL FILLS.
IT Is irenerally known that my Grandfather wa th
original inventor of these remarkable pill.
He was asrlentiflc man, and a medical prartltloner
of the Olil School, lint hei-oming alarmed at the mor
tality that attended th Bleeding and Mineral Prac
tice,' he turned his attention to tli study of nature and
the philosophy nf disease, as also to the nutnral reme
dial ujtents which he found to exfct exctnsively la th
Veiretahle Kingdom. In hi researches nd'inrestl.
nations, he became fully sutlifled that th lif waa in
Ihe blood; that by whaterer name diseases -were dis
tinguished, impurity nf the blood raa the sonro at

II diseases to a unit, ntjressarily established, the fact
that all were to be treat! ou tli saius genital prin

Now the itniud dilllculty cnnsisled In devl.lnit a rez

mass of morbid matter from th body, withont redo

the production ol these mils, which have now been
before the public One Hundred and Fourteen Years,
and It is now (IHii5) nearly III year sine Dr. Bran

which time their uperior aoelleuce aud virtuek bar
been extensively proclaimed by papers and pamphlets, '
and a rapid yearly Increase of th al of them ef

To know what will save life, to know what will
restore health, I a kuowlsdg not to b hidden, I,
therefor, a a innu desiring to do my duty falthfntly,
have doited down some of my thirty-live years' up.

assistant of nature, and cause the expulsion of aeti
monlous humors th oocasion of every sickness. Let
ns admit that corrupt hamor prevent ihe free circula

these tiuuiors, ifivinK health for pain, aud strength for
weakness.
Mo man I sick rnv when the principle of corrup

danithtar, tho saved.
These celebrated Tills are composed wholly of me
dicinal herb, and do nut contain any mercury or other
mineral, being- perfectly harmless to Ihe most tender
aire or weakest framei yet sure to search out the causa
of sickness, and reswr th baaltb If lakeu aocordiag

Let no on imnirln thev are too weak to bear tie
effect of the Pill, which put no weeknes Into the)
frame, but draw weakness unt. A few dose will be

aradunlly become unfolded to our view, which, n
forced with Urandretb Vegetable Universal Pill, I
able to cure every disease where the organs ar sound,
and greatly inereaae the average of human life.
I have now used on my own peraou, nnd prepared
and administered, Hraridreth' Pilb for Ihirty-llv
years. 1 believe they are tho bent purgative In the
worldi and with this medical qoalltv they havs ales)

inllaiiimatiou and fever are caused by eorruptesl
blood not being timely evacnateil, becaua It regurvi-'

to propagate the use of a medicine which Is possessed
of properties so calculated to ear and increas the
