Tins Colfax Pautv.--Those ilistiiiguisliud visitor.) Imvo boon Id Saluin stopped tliroo hours and tlicy hitvo likewise giuiu on their way rejoicing. At tins point, arrangements wore n i inle to trruufer tliem from tlio couch to tlio ttcamiioat. They nrrivcd early Wednes day morning, arid fiftnr n little deep, appeared oo tint verandah of tlio Bennett House, and addressed a very large crowd that had huitily gathered to hear them, They were all worn out with onnstant traveling and loss of sleep, and of course not in a condition to make tpeoohei of length. Their remarks wero prin cipally confined to llieir impressions of Oregon (which were very favorable) and hearty thanks for tho unbounded hospitality of the people. Hoth Colfai nnd Bross spoke very earnestly of the pressing necessity for tho speedy construc tion of tho PaciDo Ilailroad, They aro en thusiastic friends of tho great enterprise. Mr. Richardson, of the Tribune, gave as the poet ry of an Oregon landsonpe In good style. Ho is tho poet of the party. Mr. Bowles did not speak. They are jolly, wliolo-siiuled men who .would drive "dull care" from any audienco, and push tho matters of practical evcry-dny life with that hearty humor which always in spires and achieves success. Governor Bross (proprietor of the Chicago Tribune) has the advantage of being the handsomest man in the party, but he admits that Colfax, being a singlo man can always bent him with the ladies. This was well illustrated here, as Mrs. Flora Davenport met thorn at tho breakfast table with a supply of the finest raspberries ever grown in any country, and presented tho entire lot to Colfax. But Bross and Richardson made him "ootno down" by threatening to reveal soma secret of their Utah campaign. We hope all who visit Oregon may bring us as Viorm hearts and kindly feelings. They will always receive a most hospitable welcome We heartily wish them asafu return to tho "States." Tub University Commbnoement. Tho annuul examination and commencement exer cises at the University, during tho Inst week, were throughout interesting and satisfactory in tho highest degree. There was no useless pa rade or senseless amusements to covr up the defects of want of study. When a class was brought upon tho platform for examination, the class-books wero distributed to tlio audi enco indiscriminately, and a general rcquoBt made that any one in the audienoe who would was requested to couduot the examination. Several classes were examined by the visitors, and tho class in astronomy was especially sub jcated to tho cross-examination of a half doz en gentlemen, most of the questions being sug gested by tho subject and not by the book. So far at we observed tho pupils were all ready for any question from any source, and always gave satisfactory answers. The class in rhct orio did especially well. The tnusio depart ment, nnder the charge of Miss Breyman, ex hibited rare proficiency, both in vocal and in strumental musio ; and added greatly to the interest of all the ether exercises. Tho Com mencement exercises on Thursday afternoon wero all in good tiiBte, and passed off most pleasantly. Tho compositions by tho young ladies, and the orations by tho young gentle men, were all of the highest order of gradua ting honors. Wo qoubt if any school anywhere can turn out better literary productions than those of Misses McCalley and Wilson ; or more appropriate, well considered and truly merito rious orations than those of Messrs. Kahlcr, Denney and Willis. We congratulate tho graduating elms, and the Faoulty and Trustees on the suoccss of their labors. The hull was tastefully decorated with evergreens, the na tional oolors, and portraits of Washington and Lincoln. The musio furnished was mostly pa triotic airs, and in these respects, as well as hi all others, the programme was superior to any thing else of tho kind we have ever witnessed. The influence of this school will always bo on the right side, and it should be heartily sup ported. Professor, Gatcii. We regret to learn that this able teacher and most estimable gen tleman has severed his connection with the Willamette University, and intends to go to California. Prof. Gatch has filled the honor able position of President of the oldest college on the Paoilio, to the entire satisfaction of all ; and has been universally beloved by the pupils. 11a is an able and eminently successful teacher and it will be bard to fill his place, lie will leave Salem with the best wishes of every one who has known him. Oregon cannot afford to lose such men. Tub Okation asii Poem. The address of Judge Boise to the graduating class, liift Thursday evening, was tho most appropriate production we have ever listened to on such occasions. It contained not only brilliant rhetorio and eloquent sentiments, but also sage wisdom and useful advice, which the duet ought to constantly bear in mind. The poem by Mr. Clarke, read by Mr. Mullory, is a fine production, superior lo anything we have heard in that line for a long time. The Trusters ought to embody both the address and the poem in the next catalogue. t- Thr Chinook Oration. We neglected to mention at the proper place, that the "Chinook dialect" was duly honored with a place among the Commencement exercises. An oration in "Chinook" was delivered by Mr. Reuchlin Burke ; and delivered well. In fact in cousti- (tituted the "sensation" of the day, and brought down the house with loud applause. We are promised a translation for publication. And you. contrary lo the character of an upright pro-fvK-.ion.il man, have dragged the nutter tutu the p.ir liuuer juur mi.im. i ".. Beg your pardon, my dear sir. We stated the simple fact that you had paid a printer off with greenbacks at pjr (ivtiiolt was no part of the lawsuit) ; and then you dragged all the rcet iuto the Arena (we would n't allow it in the Statesman) as a justiGcalion. which being told three separate times, amounts to no jotli Mention at all. t7An Agricultural Society has been organ ized in Wasco county, with Mr. Newell of the Mountaineer for President. On tho petition of Mary Sur rutt, through her counsel. Messrs, Aiken nnd Cleniett, Judge Wilder of tire Supreme Court o! tliis district, issued a writ of habeas corpus to General Hnncnclt, commanding him to pro duce in court this morning nlk 10 o'olock pre cisely, the body of Mary E. Surratl, with the cause of her detention, Tho writ was sowed on Gen. Hancock at 8 o'olock this morning by United States Marshal Gooding, lie imme diately consulted with the Attorney General and the Secretary of War. At 10:30 the Gen ertil had not obeyed the writ. The fact was brought to tho notice of tho court by her coun sel, but tho Judge said he had no power to en force tlio writ. To-day guards were plaood all around tho arsenal, and gourds to prevent tho intrusion of persons to the boo no of elocution, none being admitted excepting those previous ly supplied with tickets by Gen. Hancock. The relations of Mrs, Surrutt and Harrold spent several hours with them during the fore noon. They wore also attended by their spir itual advisers as wero also Atzerott and Payne. A few minutes after I o'clock the outer prison door was opened. Mrs. Surratt was support ed on ber way to the gnllowt by two military officers. Next to her followed Atzurott, Har rold and Payne; aocompauied by their respect ive ministers of the gospel. Front scats were reserved for them on tho platform in the fol lowing manner! Mrs. Surratt, then Payne, Harrold, nnd Atzerott ; tho officers entrusted with the execution and the ministers accompa nied the intermediate position. Gen. 11 ur troupl, who had been from tho commencement In charge of tho prisoners, cumo forward and read tho order of tho War Department ap proving the sentences and ordering the penal ty of death to bo inflicted. A heavy guard was placed on the walls surrounding the place, while below tho soldiers wero formed on two sides of the square. Several hundred witnesses were present, nuxiaus spectators to the solemn scene. Ono of the priests attendant on Mrs. Surratt repeated a short prayer to which Payne, who was seated next to her, attentively listened. The miuister who had been administering to Puvno. exnrcned, iu the name of tho latter. his sincere thanks to Gen. Hattroupt and the officers and soldiers who had charge of him for their personal kindness. They had not uttered an unkind word nor given mi unpleasant look or gesture, and seemed to have compassion for his misfortune. Tlio minister then uttered a brief prnyer asking for Payne's forgiveness of all sins und iu tho passage out of this world in to tho joys if Heaven. The minister who at tended Harrold also returned thanks for the kind treatment of the prisoner, and offered a prayer tliut God would reueivo his soul. Har rold was affected to tears. The miuister who attended Atzerott also relumed thanks for him to Gen. Hurtroupt lor kind attention, and then invoked the mercy of God on tho prisoners. Thccondemned wero then required to rise from their seats when the chains wero removed. They were now all on tho drops, their hands fastened behind them and legs bandaged ubovo and below the knees while the caps were placed over their heads. Atzerott while being pre pared for execution exclaimed : "Gentlemen, farewell ; be warned by the futc of tho rnnn now before you." Ono of the clergymen stand ing near exclaimed : "May we all meet iu l he other world." As soon as tho nooso was put arouud each head, Mrs. Surratt't being the last one adjusted, a section of the platform on which they had been standing suddenly fell nnd the culprits were hanging several feet from tho ground. Mrs. Surratt and Payne scarcely moved a muscle. Atzerott exhibited some twitching, but Harrold showed more nervous sensibility than any of the others. The bodies hung uu til life was extinct, and afterward were drawn for buriul. rough colli in being on hand for that purpose. The arrangements for the execution were perfect. Gen. Hancock was present throughout the proceedings. It is said that Pavue made a statement lust night iu behalf of Mrs. Surratt, exonerating her from complic ity, and said that all tho other prisoners sub scribed to nu affidavit impeaching (lie testimo ny ot important witnesses ngninst her. IT It generally known that my Grandfather wat tlie , original inventor of these remarkable pills, lie was a srientillo man, and a modicul practitioner of the Old School. Hut becoming alarmed at the mor tality that attended the ltleeding and Mineral Pnte I Iro,' he turned liia attention to tlie study of natnreand , the philosophy of diaense, nt also to the nutnral reme dial ugents which he found to exist exclusively In the Veuetuble Kingdom. In bit reteurcbea and iuvesti gutinnt, he hecume fully sutlslled that the life wat In the blood; that by whatever name diseases were dis tinguished, Imnnrity of tlie blood wat the source of all a simple nnd truthful doctrine, which, In reducing all diseusus to u unit, necessarily established the fact that all were to be treated on the tuuie general prin oiplet. vis: by pnrgation, - Now the grand dilllculty consisted In devising t veg-' ettible compound that would invigorate, purify, and cleanse the blood, correct and regulate nil the diner- ' ent tecretloits, nnd by purgation dlsoharge the wholt ' must of morbid matter from tlie body, without reduc ing the strength. After thirty year of close applica tion, he considered hit object fully accomplished In the production ol these, pills, which have now been before tlie public One Hundred and Fourteen Yeara, and il is now (twi5) nearly ill yours since Dr. Bran drelli'a Vegetable Universal Life Preserving Pillt were Hint presented to the American: public during which time their euperiur excellence aud virtues have been extensively proclaimed hy paperi and pamphleta, nud a rapid yearly Increase of the sulo of them ef fected. To know what will save life, to know what will restore health, Is a knowledge not to be hidden, I, thereto, as a man desiring to do my duty faithfully, have dotted down tome of my thirty-five yean' expe rience witli Hraudreth't Pills', which are an effectual assistant of nature, nnd cause the expulsion of acri monious humors the occasion of every sickness. Let ua admit that corrupt humors prevent tlie free circula tion of tlie blood, that Urandretli't Pillt take out these humors, giving health for pain, aud streugth for wenkuest, Nn man Is tick save when the principle of corrup tion geu I he aacendeneyi Urandretli't Pillt aid the Life Principle to regain theempire by removing tlie corrupt humors from the body. Many a time 1 have teen life apparently at the last ebb, when them Pillt were given, and In a few hours the danger wat past, and health's Mood lido gove the patient renewed life and vigor. Many are the fathers, mothers, tons, and daughters, thut taved. ' Those celebrated Pillt are composed wholly of ma- dlcinal herbs, and do not ooutaiu any mercury or other mineral, being perfectly harmless to the molt tender aire or weakest frame; yet sure to search out the) causa of sickness, aud restore the health If takeu according to the direction!. Let no one imagine they are too weak to bear the effect of these l'ills, which put DO weakness into the frame, but draws weakness ont. A few doeet will be get contldence, and then the beauties of purgation wilt gradually become unfolded to our view, which, en forced with Urandreth't Vegetable Universal Pillt, il able to cure every disease where the organs are wand, and greatly increase the average of human life. I have now need on mv own person, aud prepared and admhilslered, Uran'dretb'i Pillt for thirty-live yean. I believe they aro the best purgative in the worldt and with this medical quality they have alto a tonic elltwt. And at I aro of the llrai opinion that inrlaiumiitioii aud fevers are caused by corrupted bland not being lliuoly evacuated, because it regurgi tates, so to speak, over the whole body, and Unit our rupta tlie sound blood that should nourish all the mem- nert, aun actnuiiy ueetroyi aim paralyses memuere or organs tlmt are unsimtidi and at I know tlmt these Pillt have a direct cltocl to remove all oorrupt blood and acrimonious humors from the body In fact, all humors below the vital standard of bealtm to 1 should be guilty of a great tin, did 1 not do all in my power to propagate tlie use of a mediciue which it possessed of properties so calculated to lava and increase tbe average of human life.
