several dayi in endeavoring to aioertain the
truth or tbe matter, and finally conolutloii that
Baker had laid enough to require a prelimin-
ary examination, and be therefore arretted him
for that purpose alone, that tbe truth might be
ascertained and if not guilty, that he might
ret Dnder no tuipicion or fears, and if guilty,
. that he might be tent to Fort Vanoouver for

'arresting him that hia only object was to in

ating hia home, &o. Although Baker had

under military guard to be tried before a mili
tary commission, and Capt. Keeler, therefore,
Tory properly discharged him.
Beforo discharging him, ho took occasion to
give Baker some good sound advice aa to hia
duty aa a man and a citizen. Baker received
it well, exhibited evidence that he felt that hia
liberty was In the hands of a man that would
give him a fair trial, and would proteot hie
right aa ready aa any other man's in the coun
try ; and when he went to leave the Captain'a
office, ho, seized his hand, giving it a hearty
(bake, declaring that he believed tbe Captain
Was determined to do what was right.
Juat here we will say a word in relation to
Captain Keeler. Ilia office aa Provost Mar
shal is by no means a pleasant one. Upon hia

of feeling seems to exist over in Polk. As an
