The complete returns from twenty-one States
in the last Presidential election, as compared
with the vote of 18li0. show an increase of
291,043 vote. If there be added to this the
number ol soldiers from Massachusetts. Rhode
Island. New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, 111
nois and California, who.while away from their
homes, were prevented hy the laws ol their
States from exercising tho right of voting, and
alto the increase in the number of voters in the
organized Territories, the aggregate increase
would certainly bo no less than four hundred
thousand. This it a remarkable proof of the
steady progres of the North in population. not
withstanding the ravages uf a great war.
