From time to titno we haw received desorip.
, tion of tbo Great Falls of Snake river. From
these report we learn that thu falls exoeed in
bight and volume of water, those of Niagara,
the most noted in the world. The following
from the Boise Newt is front a visitor who has
taken the foublo to measure them and thu
write :
"When we arrived at Book Creek, one day's
travel from Salmon Fall Ferry, we left one
t (sorniog for the great fulls and took a stiaight
line for Snake river. At thu distance of four
Utile.. w came upuu them unawares, a the
blutfn are over three thuosand feet high on each
t fide. consetiHntly yon would not hear them.
There we commenced thu descent to the falls
'on horseback to within a few hundred yards of
the- awful precipice. There fastening our
horse we stHUi ileroeiieil tn a level with the
river above the fulls. The sight that then broke
npnn th view is tun siibhino In be described
by one so little capable of doing it justice as
myself.' We measured tho distance that the
whole voluuie of walur fall in one sheet, and
found it 203 feet. Then, above, I should judge
it to be about 23 to 30 feet full before it reaches
the grand Ull. .The width of the grand fall I
tbould lodge to be about 2,500 feet. I have
viaited Niagara many limes, but thu fall eclip
te It far. Four mile further above we found
another of less note, where the water divide
. lulu two part and fall a distauee of 167 feet.
' Should yon ever agaiu orost the plain don't go
by the fall without visiting tlieiu, as it is well
worth one year of one' life. Our measurement
may be nlied upon at perfectly correct, a we
started prepared for it.
