Be it mortal by thr. Senate and Hotter, of Rrprr.ir.ntn

regulate trade and intercourse with the Indian
tribes and to preserve peace on the frontier," up
proved June thirtieth, eighteen hundred and
thirty-four, be and the same it horeby amended
ao ai to read aa follows, to wit: "See. iiO. And he
. it further euacted, That if any person shall sell,
exchange, give, barter, or dispose of any spir-
. Ituous liquors or wine to any Indian uuder tho
charge of any Iudian superintendent or Indian
gent appointed by the United Hiatus, or shall in
troduce or attempt to introduce any spirituous
liquor or wine into the Indian country, such per
son, on conviction thereof, before the proper dis
trict or circuit court of the United States, slmll be
, imprisoned for a period not exceeding two years,
. aud shall be fined not more than three hundred
dollars) Provided, however, That it shall be a
sufficient defence to any charge uf introducing or
attempting to introduce liquor into the Indian
- country if it be proved to be done by order of the
' War Department, or any officer duly authorized
thereto by the War Department. And if any su-
. perintendent of Indian aff.iirs, Indian agent or
sub-agent, or commanding officer of a military
. post baa reason to suspect or is informed that any
white person or Indian is abont to introduce or
hn introduced any spirituous liquor or wine into
ine inaian country in violation ot the provisions
of this section, it shall be lawful for such super
intendent, agent, sub-agent, or commanding offl
eer, to cause the boats, stores. oackneos. w 111701m
tleds. and places of deposit of such person to be
, searched ; and if any such liquor is found therein,
the same, together with the boats, teams, wagons,
and sleds used in conveying the same, and also
me rooaa, packages, ana peltries or sued person,
shall be seized and delivered to the proper officer.

teen bond red and fifty -four, amendatory of the act
approved September tweuly-seveulh, eighteen
uedred and tifly, creating the office of surveyor
general of the public lands In Dregon, etc., "that
in. lie of the two tnwuhlia ul land granted to the
Territory of Oregon, by the tenth section of the
act of eighteen hundred and fifty, for universities,
there shjtll be reserved to each of the Territories
of Washington and Oregon two townships of laud
ef thirty-six sections each, to be selected in legal
subdivisions, for university purposes, unilor the
direction of the Legislatures of said Territories,
respectively ;" and whereas it is represented that
sales have been made by Territorial authorities
ef leads selected in virtue of the terms of said
act of seventeenth July, eighteen hundred and
fifty-four, authorising selections to be "reserved,"
merely nnder the conviction that they had the
power to dispose of the same as a foe-simple

mine in illustration of the practical effect of a
policy of rapid extraction, milling the ores on
the best terms that can b made with outside
parties, without regard to the loss in the process.

Sale of tub Cahoo of a Blockade Run-
NBK. A very large sale of oaptured goods was
held in Bostou on the Mih of June. It was the
cargo of the prize steamer Greyhound, oaptured
and sent into that port by the United States
steamer Connecticut. The cargo consisted of
cotton, tobacco and spirits of turpentine, and
realised over half a million of dollars. The
vigilance of our oruisers has about played out
blockade running.
