year past gathered to witness the closing exer
cises and to hoar the address of Mr. Smith.
. There have boon in attendance during tho past
school year, two hundred aid sixty-four students,
a number sufficiently large te bring into requi
sition all the facilities the institution at present
alfords. The President, T. M.Gatch, is uuassuuv
(ing, but an accomplished scholar and successful
educator. Professors L. J. Powell and F. II.
Grubbs, the latter a graduate of the school, the
former of an Eastern college, are successful tcach-
i era in their departments.
Misa Lucy A. Loo, who graduated with honor
a year ago, is acting as teacher of French and
several other branches ; Miss Brcyman as teacher
of Gorman and Music, and Miss S. A. Cornell as
teacher of the primary department.
This institution has done all that its limited fa
cilities would enable, it to dofor all who have ever
given it their patronuge,and has given satisfaction
to all except thoso whoso "p 'enliiir" views on
certain subjects do not admit of their being satis
fed with anything that does not pander to their
tiroiudices. That all who have boen connected
' with it have boeu unswonriug in their devotion
to the nwtitakoiiB of our country, and outspoken
on the side of Union during the progress of the
present struggle, in an honor that will follow it
through future years, and endear it to the rising
generation. .. ; "
We remember once of hearing President llnyt
remark that this school, if properly sustaiued
would make Salem the Alliens of Oregon, and we
io not think that was an extravagant expression.
Hot have wo any duubt tint the people will sus
tain it. Near twenty thousand dollars have al
ready been subscribed toward the new building,
the foundation of which is already laid, and the
remainder wilt bo forthcoming when our newly
discovered mines begin to disgorge their wealth,
wheu our young city becomes the active center
of a prosperous trade, and the people sea an in.
stitution siriiggling for existence which is to sup
ply an actual want of our growing State. It is
the oldest lite-ary institution on the coast was
founded nearly a fourth of a century age, while
our State was yet a wilderness has Buffered with
her in adversity, prospered in her prosperity, and
is destined we trust in future to be the Alma mater
of many of her worthiest citisens of all trades
and 'professions, and the crowning glory of her
literary fame.

not adopt a better method of advertising their

lose nothing by comparison with those of other

Tall Ryb and Good Wheat. Mr. Pretty,
man of Polk county, has left at our office some
stalks of wheat and rye that aro of uncommon
growth, the rye measuring 8 feet. The heads of

tilump. Mr. P is a good Union man, and as he
las good varieties of grain, we judge him to be a
thrifty farmer.

John L. Zleber, son of John S. Ziebcr,
Esq., died at his father's residence this morning.
He formerly served as a clerk in the Land Office
tinder his father, And was well and favorably
known in and about Salem as a young tnun of in
dustry, honesty, nd sterling worth. He ksavea a
wife and one child to mourn bis loss. His death
which was caused by consumption, has been an-,
ticipated for several months.

has resigned his position as Secretary of War.

tho candidates mentioned to succeed Stanton
are Senator John Sherman and Gen. Schenck.
The burning of Post Master General Blair's
house by the rebels lias led to other than Cab

Washington, July 19. Gen. Sherman on-,
nounocs on the 18th, that having previously :
crossed the Chattahoochie with his whole army,
Jie advanced fire miles south of the river and
mnilo without resistance, except slight skir
mishing with the rebel rear. This move neces
sarily forces Johnston into the defenses of At
lanta, and places that city within range of
Sherman's guns. Subsequent to crossing the
Cliutlnliooohie, Gen, Sherman has occupied bis
troops in tearing up railroads most important to
the rebels.

A scout who has since arrived at La Grange

From other sources we learn that Smith met
Forrest near l'ontotoo, Mississippi, on the 1:1th,
nnd loitght that day and the two following days,
driving him below Tupelo, whipping him badly
in five different battles. Our loss is said lo be

and Boise mines though not thu shortest ii
undoubtedly through the Willamette valley. I
A straight line from Bed Bluff to the mines
leads across such extensive parched and barren
deserts, and over so rugged and difficult mount
ains, that it can never be used as tho main
thoroughfare.

Mr. Harvey. He avers that our statement that
no writ was issued was incorrect. We believe

had ucver issued. Our limits would not permit

incompetent, and grossly mismanages the af
fair of his office, to the great detriment of the
publio and of the department. Mr. Stevens
was the former Superintendent of the Branch
