Washington, Mity 15. The total number
of wounded brought up from the battles so far
is 1S!.7'K). Our army surgeon says there were
but 1,501) wounded reumiuiug at Fredericks
burg. An official dispatch from Gen. Sheridan
dated Bottom Dridge, 1,1th, says on the 8th we
inarched wholly urouud tho enemy's right and
reached North Anna river. That night wo
destroyed the enemy's depot, nnd three trains
nf ears were driven back and other stores, de
stroying 15 0011 rebel rations, tearing up rail
road track fur ten . miles, destroying several
culvert and recaptured nearly 400 ul our men.
In lliu morning of the lOih resumed thu march
on this line crossing Htnilli Anua, capturing
Ashland .Station, destroyed a lot of cars and
dime buildings containing a largo amount of
cnmiuLsury stores, scverul miles of road, six
culverts, trestle bridges, etc. About 7 o'clock
mi the morning of the Hill resumed the march
uu Richmond, and found General Stewart with
cavalry toncoutruted at Yellow Tavern and
attacked him, after a severe contest, gained
jiossessiou of thu Urtiuk Turnpike, capturing
enemy's works near Itiuhmimd. During the
night Sheridan inarched thu whole of bis com

works very formidable, Sheridan gave up bis

crossing Gen. Morril attacked the cavalry and

The enemy observing onr forces re-crossing
the Cbickahnminy came out of their second
lino of works in considerable force. and attack
ed division under Gregg and Wilder.
After a severe contest they were repulsed
and driven back to their works.
All of our wounded were brought off except

lling, just before dark, the rebels made an at

with artillery. They were driven back wilii
severe loss. Cannonading has continued for
sever d hours. We lost 30 or 40 killed and
wounded. After tho repulse of the rebels, a
division of the olli corps made a charge un tho
enemy's position, ami it is reported to hare cap
tured a buttery and some prisoners. Lee's
forces are believed to be iu liuc of battle 3
miles beyond Spottsylrama court house, in a
south-easterly direction.
Several important changes have been made
iu several of our corps ; Grant will bring a su
perior force tu bear on all sides. Fresh troops
nre arriving, and a general assault would have
been made on the enemy's right, but owiii; to
the condition of the roads, which were almost
impassable, a portion of the artillery failed to
get into position, and tho attack was aban
doned. The impression prevails at headquarter
that there will be hard lighting on this fide nf
North Anna river. Lee has bis forces massed,
nnd will renew buttle as soon as we advance.

enemy came nut of their fortifications and at
tacked us. The fight lasted till 5 o'clock,

At I) o'clock last evening, the enemy advanced
upon our lines near Petersburg." A short on
giigemeut ensued, which resulted iu thu enemy

Later adrices from Alexandria indicate that
Gen. A. G. Smith would be compelled to
march overland to the Mississippi river, fight
ing his way out.
It is reported that a force of 10,00") rebels
are threatening Huulsrillu. General W. G.
Smith, in command of the place, bad ordered
the citizens to work in the fortifications.
Tho strainer Fulton from Portltoyal reports
that when off Charleston, on the 14th, a geu
eral cngatrcineut was going on between nnr
fleet and the rubel forts and batturies on James
Island.

Chicago, May 16th. Later advices from
Red rivhr confirm! former reports, and slate
that rebels have work on Watson's plan
tation nf 28 guns, and another on Scraggy
Point Mountain of 18 guns.
Memphis, May 14. Little Rock advices of
12th report that Steele was confident of mail
ing good hit line of works. Kirhy Smith was
menacing Pino Bluff in strong force, but tho
place was well fortified.
St. Louis, May 17. Vicksburg dates to the
10th says the expedition under MoArtUnr cap
tured Ynzou City, with but little resistance.
Raids by rebels on plantations continued.
Most fiendish brutalities are committed.

Washington, May 17. Dispatches from Gen.
Ilntlcr report success of expedition under General
Kurtz, cutting off tho Danville railroad and de
stroying the bridges uu tho Appomattox river.
On Tuesday tliu robelt under cover of thick
fog, luado nil attack on Smith's lines, and forced
tlivin back with confusion and considerable hiss.
As soon as tin fog lifted, the enemy were driven
back. At the same time the enemy made an at
tack from Petersburg on Butler's forces guarding
the rear, but were handsomely repulsed.
We hold the railroad between I'utorsburg and
Richmond.
Dispatches from Sigid received this evening
report that on Ilia loth ho fought the forces of lm
boden under Hrcckinridgo at New Market, Shu.
uandoah Valley. The enemy's forces wore in sti
perior numbers, and he gradually withdrew anil
reerosscd the Shenandoah, having lost 5 pieces of
artillery and 600 killed, wounded and prisoners
but bringing on hit trains and wounded. He
slates that in consequence of the long lines of
trains which he had tu guard, he could not bring

morning began with skirmishing on our right.
We fully cxpsct a general and bloody light, and
we trust decisive battle.
New Yoiik, May A correspondent with
Butler eires a detailed account nf Beauregard's
attack on onr forces at Plymouth Creek on the
Kith. The entire length of the rebel lines opened
with artillery, and shells poured upon onr posi
tion in showers. A dense fog enveloped the conn
try at lite time; both armies were wrapped in a
mist.
This was the condition of affairs, when the
rebels massing their troops, attacked nnr right
under Hindmnn, enveloped its right flank and
took it In snrprise.
The first blow was struck with terrllm force,
Hickman's brigade of Irnh corps, holding the
right, was doubled tip and fell back on the next
brigade, which was also thrown into confusion.
Onr men did not obstruct until a column passed
between Hickman t right and the river. Taking
him in front and rear they placed him between
the columns, and for a time threw them into eou
fusion. Hickman made a gallant fight at long at be
enuld, but the enemy came npon him to tuddenly
and in such overwhelming numbers that success
ful resistance wat impossible. Some of his brig
ade men were captured. After having beon forced
back again, a heavy attack was made on the en
tire line of the Hth corps. The entire right was
forced back for tome distance. The hatUe ragd
with unexampled fnry. The rebels after throwing
heavy m.asses upon onr force finally forced ns
hack nearly a quarter of a mile. Uur men fought
stubbornly, and repeatedly charged the rebel ad
vance with terrible slaughter i but not without

ous fire with a recklessness and sternness scarcely
tn lie believed. We lost four guns. Finally, af
ter forcing the 14th corps back from its position,

came up in the same steady, conildanMal manner,
hut were received by more rapid and equally
deadly fire by our forces.
They Ilien broke and run for the woods, nnd we
opened a murderous fire on their retreat. They
seemed iletermiucu, However, m ores uui mu
and force us out of position. Ko-furnied Had re
inforced they again, after 10 minutes, got to work
and were precipitately driven back at all points.
That ended efforts on their part to force open
our line, and loaving their killed and wounded,
to the number of 1,0(10, on tho field before our
line, they massed upon Smith's position and at
tacked his left, (jilinom immediately ordered
Turner to attack on Hank and ordered Terry to
assist him. Turner's attack had hardly com
menced before (Jilmoro was ordered by General
Butler to return and to strengthen Smith's corps,
now forming in his rear. Our troops fell back
lowly and iu order, repulsing evory attack of the
rebels to" harass our movement, and making a
stand at evory favorable position, until the enemy
ceased to follow and fell back to their works.
The righting which had been going on along the
line now ceased. At half past li o clock prepara
tions wero made to withdraw our forces from the
Held and return to tho entrenchments. The ar
tillery was sent to the rear, except that employed
to cover the retreat and guacd tho ambulances
with wounded. Supply trains were dispatched
to the rear, and finally the entiro army fell back,
onemy not pursuing.
The same correspondent says of Kurtz's raid
on Lynchburg and Danville railroad, that he tore
up several miles of the track, destroyed rails and
blew up considerable stores at Appomatux sta
tion. Sheridan's force again started on a raid around
Richmond on the !5th. Cavalry will koep the
rilroad communication to Richmond cut tor a
while.

llith announce tho battle of Thursday, 14th. and
state that the slaughter was terrible. No partic
ulars were given. They add that Jeff Davis had
received a dispatch from Leo which had been
kept secrot.
General Kurtz's cavalry Is now moving on Roa
noke station with intention of dostroying the
great bridge over Staunton river. If they are
successful they will return by City Point.
The rebels will commence work to repair de
stroyed bridges on Petersburg and Woldon roads.

blockade of Arkansas river, below Little Rock

lutter mutter. I recommend its careful perusal
by the people of Pnlk county, that they may
more fully understand the position Mr. 0. oo-
oupies before them. Whether it proves his in
timity or not l leave lor tne people to je.tige,
So far ns the personal nhuso of myself is con
cerned, I pass it over to the common sense
view nt the people tney nave never yet laiieii
tn do mo justice and I have great confidence
in them.
I ahull treat Mr Outhouse as a man for ho
still wean tho human form. His style it not
my stylo. Ho inyi that he wrote the letter
abusing the Administration at Judge Hayden't ;
this is what the facts indicate. But about put
ting the letter iu tho post office ho is certainly
mistaken, or wilfully nod maliciously declares,
upon hi affidavit, what he knows to be ntitrnc.

heard of suid letter, until abunt the last nf Au
gust, or first nf September, of said year t that
in ft conversation with me in reference to said
letter, ou tho 26th of September, 1863. Mr.
Outhouse never asked me where, or of whom,
the sntnu was procured, nor at eny subsequent
time, ulthough he bad repeated opportunities to
do so ; that he wrote a letter to ine dated the
23d of December, 1863, making said inquiry,
when the place of bit residence was further
from the ost office than it was from my office ;
that in tho conversation referred to above, Mr.
(). said in substance that Mr. Harer, to whom
this letter in dispute wat written, was disloyal;
that be (Outhouse) had a good position oi clerk
at the Agency, which he would like tn retain.
