I look upon the man Outhouse more in pity than
mi anger. He ban done me no injury. The vio
lent course ho has taken against the Union party
In 1 oik county, has been and is of great lervire to
the party and to myself personally. Mr. Out
house had some conversation with Union men at
Dulles nt the time nf the Democratic rally in Sep
lumber 18H3, when ho s lid he had a good position
nnd wonld like to retain it. Ho was h Union man
nud would act with the Union purtv and re
quested that no further use be inado of the letter.
In fact, he off-red to sell out to the pnrty he now
vails the abolition party for a clerkship at the
Agency At this time he mndo no inquiry about
I where the letter enmo from, nor fur a long time
fter, although he had repented opportunities to do
on. And when he did make the inquiry he did so
by loiter, when it was a greater distance to the
l'ost Office than In the oftica nf the person who
liad possession of the letter, and of whom ha could
have made the inquiry personally.
As he hnd been so long in asking for this Infor
mation, the answer was delayed, nud ho (Mr. Out
house) came out with very strong statements that
the letter had been stolen from the Post Office,
nnd that he would put somebody in the peniten
tiary. It was thought best nt this stage of the
game to give htm plenty of rope which was done,
nud he was offered a fuil explanation of the whole
matter if he would ninke affidavit that ho put the
kii'iiI lelter in thu Post Office. Ho has made an
affidavit to that effect, aud the explanation is
nmdo. There are others beside myself who know
the above statement is true. The letter was used
for the purpose of getting Mr. Outhouse removod
from the clerkship nt the agency. It was thought
that a man who believed as he did was a danger
ous man to hold nn office under an Administra
tion he so virulently hated.
The political sentiments of an official have no
right to be "private, " or in a private correspon
dence to a secessionist: and the extract above
was made public, nnd those who have done so are
willing to bear tho blame.

our Government, and made nn able nud rapid

ing for friends to regret, enemies to pick up. or

A FIGHT WITH TIIE INDIANS.
The Mounluinnr of the gtith April contains the
following from Canyon City, under dnto of the
15th:
Yesterday at dny-brenk the red devils attacked
Mr. Overton's ranch at the mouth of Dixie Creek,
and succeeded iu taking about fifty head of horsos
from tho corral. Mr. Overton, with two others,
followed in hut chuse, mid had already succeoded
ill retaking it large portion of the stock, when they
came upon the Indians in ambush. A brief fight
eiimcd which resulted in the death of Overton
and George Wilson. Three Indian, were killed.
They were eleven in number, and were led by a
white man. ,
The horses nnd cattle driven uff from this camp
in the lust few weeks, numbers by the hundred.
Some of tho horses bolonging to Lieut. Way
mire's command wore driven off. ami ono of the
soldiers wounded while at South Fork. A few
nights ago some cattlo were shot full of arrow,
not a half mile from town.
Of Ihe pursuit the writer says : A brief sketch
must itifliee. On the night of the I lit It of March,
over one hundred head of horses and mules ware
driven from the ranch of D. Ilavis, and aeveral
killed with arrows. This was but a short distance
from town. The miners immediately threw them
selves into a body, aruied with such weapons as
were available, nud started in pursuit. It was
ioipossiblo to move the whole command, jadod as
the hor.ea were, fast oouiijrh to overtake the In-
uiuna. Bcvtn men, wan tlio best horses anil arms
in the command, took the Indian trail, with or
ders for the rear to follow as faat as posiblo.
Over mountains of perpetual snow, aud through

day until wo reached the region of Harney Lake.
We halted tor the mam boilv, which coming up,
found but a few day's supplies on hand. A mes
senger was dispatched for men and supplies. Mi-
tiers ami merchant, contributed freely, auo men
and' money were furthcoming at once. Lieut.
Waymire with twenty soldier, was soon with us.
The whole force now numbered fifty-four volun
teers and twenty soldiers. I he weather was in
tolerable. For seventeen day. snow nnd sleet
full almost incessantly. 80010 nf the men', feet
were frozeu from exposure. Often our saturated
blankets wore freiou like hoard's and we would
camp, after a hard day'a march, on the Indians'
trail, null no wood but a few groeu willows. On
the 4th of April, over two hundred miles from tho
Canyon, with barely bread and coffee enough to
enrry us bark, we came upon the first Indians we
had encountered. Thy were encamped in a
great valley by a liitl" stream. Our approach
was discovered, and the camps were deserted
without a shot from ihe foe. YVu killed but one
Indian and captured two horses, and burned their
wigwam..
With 4.1 men, they pursued the Indians, and
next day overtook them about day-break, and had
a running fight with the savages, having one mail
wounded, Dan. Connor, receiving a musket ball
iu the breast. It i. nut known what ihe Indian
loss was. Knrly in tho morning, Sergeant CnMcd,
with two privates, Cyrus K. Ingrahani nnd John
luuiuert, and one cmzeu Oeo. A. Jaquitti, were
sent out as scouts, but nothing bad be.-n heard of
them when the command returned, and it is sup
posed they were killed by the lmlian.
