wards Chattanooga, and st latest dates occupied a
strong defensive position and was confident of his

Mechanics are scarce, nud wages high. Stone
maious and bricklayers charge ten dollars per
day; carpeulert, eight dollars! laborers, four
to tiro dollars. Four mills, ot live stamps
each, arc runninr ii'olir ,lJ ty. Je hun
dred dollars per ton is paid the mills for crush
ing ore. A tlon-n nmru mills could bo supplied
Mi.h ore from the mines already open. There
is some compla lit at thu high rates charged
for crushing, as llie ore is easily worked. P irt

the river, and Iwo at Hig Creek, aud one at
