would be an nrvmonntnirt busiiipss. Hat at
present labor is hick and hard to get in Or
eeon. and therefore a few domestics could
be well, and comfortably employed In ercry
family: , At a distance this looks very wen,
for it has been Ions admitted that, " In win
ter, a eood active darkey is a very conuort
able blanket, and in summer quite a re
freshing shade." Negroes like ail other do
mestics, serve well only generous atu uuuic
masters, by whose care they nave uceu u
nMtSMwi fih r not often in the mar
ket. If the first settlers of the country had
brought domestics of this kind with them,
then would there hare been a much better
show for slavery here to a limited extent.
Bat should the people here, now go Into
the markets of the States for slaves, they
would have to take, both as to health ana
morals, the offsconring of whatever mart
application should be made to. runs womu
they get a set of servants that they could not
keep, or that would not be worth the keep
mv ctnr. or Quite sii mo
of Oregon came hither under the belief that
Xwrro slaverv never should exist here. It
would, therefore now be nn act of rank
fiik to force the institution upon, even a
icsDeetable minority. And in turn they will
' retaliate; for many of tbetn arc of that class
who tUnk more of the ebony, than they do
of the ivory face. Upon all sides Oregon
would be exposed to the workings of the
iHlergronnd Railroad system. If a good
domestic shonld be fonnd in any family, bis
ears would soon be poisoned by the breath
ot fanaticism, and be be hurried off to a far
worse sanation, regardless of consequences.
Notwithstanding tnxy, the most hateful evil
that ever escaped from the box of Taudora,
is the mainspring. to this tuistakejt sympa
lhy, still it exists, and from preseut aspects
is on the increase. A good slave cannot
now be brought to Oregon from any part of
the south, for less than ? 1500. To the in
terest of this add the life insurance, doc
tort bills, clothing and feed of the darky,
and see whether white Iabor'cannet, even at
its present high rate, be had then per. The
wages or labor between the diflerent por
tions of society in Oregon, are not ret in
just ratio. . Time, the best regulator of
all raeh things, will fetch all to rights after
a while. Very little enconragemeut, with
proper management, will bring pknty of
working peeple from middle Europe. Not
least among the provisions of the new Con
stitution shonld be one prohibiting entirely,
the ingress of free negroes. One good la
boring German is worth more than fifty
free negroes, to a neighborhood. Amongst
free darkies, there is, perhaps not more than
one of a thousand, that has any other idea
of freedom, than freedom from woik ; and
lA.it, they are very ninth inclined to enjoy to
the fullest extent. The black and the Cclta
Saxon races are not fit to inhabit together,
only as master and servant. Their disposi
tion, color and capacity ail forbid it. At
ouce then, shut the fctate doors nainst it ;
for, if even but few conic in, they arc for
a bone of contention and stumbling block
among the whites, For a number of years
previous to 182 , the citizens of Uhio
stretched out their hands with eagerness
to
the fugitives from irirmia and Ken-
tucky, and defended them against the posi
tive laws of their country ; but in that
year, the Legislature of that State passed
a law clearing them all out o( her borders.
But whether by repeal cf the net, or
want of energy to enforce it, a sufficient
band had collected in the city of Cincinnati,
to stand the whiles a three days' batile in
the streets, not many years " afterwards.
And it may not be a matter of any great
wonder, that at some eriod not wry dis
tant, one parcel cf the citizens of that
otherwise noble State, banded with free
negroes, may be seen in bloody array against
another, But who ever heard of negro
slavery being carried on to any portiou of
territory in the United States, previously
settled without it? Such an instance is not
to be fonnd in the history of the country..
And it wonld be found ntterlrly impractica
ble in Oregon ; for it u admitted that there
is considerable taint of abolitionism inter
spersed throngh some of her districts.
When this strange delusiou actuates men
otherwise sober aud discreet, to steal, with
out remorse, seventeen thousand slaves an
nually, from their brethren of the South,
what would they not do in Oregon, where
the facilities are as ten to one iu their favor ?
And- this too, when it is evident to every
reflecting mind, that it would be much bet
ter that the whole three and a half -millions
of blacks in the Union, were at once strick
en oct of existence, than thai any two con
siderable portions of the States should
meet in bloody strife. It will also be grant
ed by all who know any thing of the negro
character, that were they all now unfettered
and sent back in the " Laud of Ham," they
would shortly retrogress into the grossest
barbarity. When Israel,' the chosen of
Heart, was suffered to go into bondage for
four hundred years, in order to learn the
arts of civilized life, how long ought the
cannibals of Africa to remain nnder a light
er yoke, for the same purpose ? A nd to
tis may be superadded, the important fact,
that they can more effectually karn the
" Road to Eternal Life," than they conld by
any other method within the ingencity of
mam.
Seat of Government.
That vexed qnestion, the location cf the
Seat of Government, ought at once to be
settled by the Convention, for at least the
first vicctinium, or twenty years. Its agita
tion has already sufficiently disgraced the
country, by leading to the destruction, iu
all probability, of a fine pnblic edifice al
most complete, with other valuable proper
ty. The Seat of Government' will be no
great advantage to any place. It is neither
that, nor corporate powers, which add much
to a town. Compare Springfield to Chica
go rantrort to Louisville, Ac. It is
commerce and manufactures, together with
liberality and good management of proprie
tors, wai Duua up places, w ho ever heard
of a flourishing town springing up in the
hands of a mean, pinching proprietor, al
ways juggling and asking for favors for his
place, but bestowing none on it himself?

EniTin Stitb'iin Sfr: Mr. Martin fSinith rencst
me to make a f'atement of tlie ream why I snpectcd
hiai of havintr bmken Into my hon during the aii nce
ol mv-srlf aud family, and taking therefrom certain per
son.! ppiperty.
On r'otiinlay the 20th of Jnne.ult bcSnpWnt as
above stated my house was broken open and a Colt's
revolver and silver watch taken therefrom. On the
following Monday, whi!e at Santiaet City, I wa relat
ing the circtimtau-e t-- Mr. Horn, with a view of secur
ing his assistance in their recovery. 1 ake! him if
Martin Smith had started for Jacksonville. He replied
that he had. I -ked hi" If Smith had a wstch or pis
tol tn his knowledge. He replied lie thought he had.
and that he thought Smith bad Imrrowed the pistol vt
Mr. l-ambinar, luit that he never knew Smith owning a
watch before the previous Sunday, and that he only
came to tfte knowledge cf it by his (Smith") asking
him the time of day to set his watch by. He further
stated that Mf. I.niMna conld tell me more about the
watch and pitol than be could.
I then went to Mr. I,aminsr. and Informed him of
what took place a my boose. I a-ked him if he rotild
give rae a desrrlptiow of the wstch and pistol Martin
Smith had in his p-ssesion when he h-fl for Jackson
ville, lie stated that he pistol Smith had bektnged tn
him, tl.ammng.) 1 tnen expresea my satisiaetion
that the ristol was not mine. In describing the watch
however that he saw in the posses-ion of Smith, it so
el.isely resembled the one taken from my bone ns sta
ted a'iove. 1 was led to imjnire if he knew how Smith
git .ewion of it. He replied that Smith had told
him umt ne borrowed it of Koiien ooo. -o naving
seen Itobert t uod ever carrvinK a waton. and the in
formation 1 had previously received that Smith was seen
opposite mv yard fence on the day the mau n and pis
tol were taken away, was inclined to believe that the
watch descrilied by Lambing was mine. I then emesrd
the rimer for the purpose of going to Mr. Samuel Mil
ler . when 1 met 31 rs. ranow. sirs. Miner, and Miss
Kdmodon. I inquired of Mrs. t arlow whether Itob
ert 'oiH bad a watch, or nut. She said that he had
one last summer or fall. I thca said that 1 bad suspect
ed Martin Smith of having my watch, but that likely
1 might ne mistaken, as oud navir.g a watcn last tail,
misht still own it. I afterwards went to Robert Wood,
from whom 1 received a certificate, of which the follow-
nig is a true copy :
This is to certify. tat I nave not sow nor loaned
Martin Smith anv watch. I wi!l testify to in any court
of lawful Jurisdiction.
t signed,) HUBMii nyvp.
June 22. 157.
This increased my suspicion, and I told Mr- Wood
that I lielrcrrd Smith bd my watili that he Smith
would stav iU Thurstnii that n7lt. and that I should
see Thurston before I slept,
I then started ror Thurston, i-y t;ie way or santiam
fit v. to eft a certificate of Mr. l-.aibini. When I
got toSautiam City, Mr. limbing informed me that he
bad made a mwtake in saying that Smith got the watch
from Wood.it should have been from Mr. McXare. I
t.'ien stated there was no use In going any further, as I
knew that Mr. McXare had a watch that would very
near!v answer tlie description of the watch which was
rfden. I afterward saw Mr. McXare when he told me
that he had loaned Smith his watch.
On askinz Mr. limbing to lnrntsn me witn a certifi
cate of the conversation wnicion urc mu n, ue coin
niird and the following is a true copy thcreol i
"This bit certify that I told Oliver Tickard that
Martin Smith said he borrowed the watch of Robert
Wood, but I was mistaken, it was lioisjrc Mc.Nare.
(Signed.) J.IM.AMUIXG."
Jntm i.l 1K.S7.
1 then requested Mr. Limbing to inform Martin
Smith's fainilv that I no longer entertained any suspi.
cion araiust l'.iin. I Martin Smith. 1 and I further stated
to Kdward I'arrish. who a son-in-law of Martin Smith,
and in presence of bi wife, and Mrs. Smith, the wife,
m Martin Smith. Uiat 1 no longer entertained any mis
picion against Martin Smith, end further that il Mr.
i.ambiitg had not been mistaken in the statements
wm.:u lie made to me in saving it was Kobert ood in
st'ad of IU.U rt McXare, 1 should never have ktarlod af
ter mm, (smith.) And that tin was the conversation
had by iwattlie time, as slated aliove. Mr. KilirarH
I'arrish has sinre acknowledged in presence of witness
es. Now as to tlie perversion and misstatements of
mm conversation niauc ny intercrted persons, I can
give them no consideration as 1 rest in the conviction
the v are false.
As to Mr. Lambing I must state that I do not enter
tain any hard feelings against him for the mistake which
he committed, as 1 cannot conceive anv design or in.
wmi Kj mirht hare in leading me into error bv erect
ing a suspicion tliat Smith had my watch in lit pos
session. Hot on the contrary, I must say that in all our
interroursc, he has shown nimscii a ineno ana a gen
And now, in conclusion, I will state that I no longer
entertain a suspicion that Martin Smith entered my
house and took therefrom the pistol and watch as above
stated. Xor have I in any manner charged him with
h.vinr. them in his possession since the date of Mr.
Lambing ccrtiticate. That this explanation is made
