-ft THE STATE REPUBLICAN. Tilt 3tra?zla of to-day is not altogether for 10-aay, u 11 ior ias vast iuioro aiso. EUGENE CITY, FEBUAEY 7. 1863. TIIE NEWS. The news this week in varied and important. The relieving of ISurnside was nut an unexpected occurrence. There is little doubt but that lie was relieved at his own urgent request. One thing is very certain, Uunerul Buruside is very distrustful of himxelf, and as a natural conse quence ha would inspire distrust into the army, and we doubt not this is the c tuse of the piescut change. Gen. Hooker, in his address of acceptance, beathes an air of confidence and defiance, well cnlculutcd to arouse the tire in the brea.t of the brave soldiers who are anxiously waiting for an opportunity to meet the enemy. Uen. Hooker says it is his intention to fight the enemy wher. -ever he finds him, and we pried ict that there will be some tall fighting soon, and as Hooker has heretofore shown himself competent for qu;ck inarches aii'l during deeds, we may expect to hear soon of some " striking demonstrations" of his military skill. The removal of Gens. Sumner and Franklin is something we were 'not looking foT, why they are relieved of their commands is to us an un accountable move, nocauso having been yet re veuled we cait but hope that their removal is only a change to some other field ol uction. Their successors, Gens. Couch and Smith, are able, genuine, wide awake and enthusiastic put riots, and wo wish them most hearty success. LOCAL AM) MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. Owing to the indisposition of our Chief printer we are compehd to issue on a hull' thee t this week. The oflice has the mumps. There was a light sprinkle of snow last night, but it was all gone before noon to day. Kend the United States Assessor's notice in anther column. We see by the Portland papers that ex Senator Stark has arrived home. J. W. Derickson, publi.-hcr of the Washoe Times, Washoe City, Nevada Terri tory, was shot through the heart by one Hays it short time since, no particulars given. Mr. Banks has introduced a bill into the California Legislature for the purpose of more effectually preventing gambling in the State, and to make tho puishment severe on offenders. If w e had a law in Oregon to punish Jtien (and boys too) for petty gambling, such lieb's holes as the " Arcade," " Long Tom" and " Lager," and their ilk all over the State, would Mon be forced to " shut up" and their profligate keepers would get a chance to earn a living in at: honest milliner. Iowa produced last season tho snug little amount 'of 20,000,000 bushels of wheat. , W. W. Kurtz, a well known printer, U man of good ability and a big heart, died on the 21st ult. in San Francisco, of ulceration ) the lungs. There is a company ot watch manufac turers in Walllmm Mass. which gives employ ment to 1T5 hands. The Oregon Farmer, has been, through the hardness of the times and meager support extended it by the farmers, compelled to mi. pen J publication. This is a shame and disgrace to tho framers of Oregon. Only 0119 agricul tural paper in the State, and let that starve for want of support. We have received the first number of tho Sanitarian, a semi monthly paper published at Oregon City, by A. Cornelius, at $2 per annum in advance, one half of u hieh is given to the Sanitary commission. The Sanitarian is to be devoted to the cause of our suffering soldiers who are so freely pouring out their heart's blood, that we may enjoy tho blessings of liberty.- We wish it most hearty success in its liable en terprise. ... .As we have recently had two well attend ed, and well paid religious Theaters in Eugene, it is now proposed to got up a (writable donation for the benefit of our follow townsman Mr. M Stevens, who has a considerable family to sup port, and only one leg to walk upon. Now Mr, Stevens Is a real object of charity, and those people who profess to bo tho friends of tho sick and the afflicted, will have a chance to test their benevolence in behalf of this worthy but uufor. lunate man, who is not able to work for a living, Tho Time has dates from the Cariboo country to the 2."th of Jan. The snow on the Hald Mountain was 7 feet deep. Some claims are paying largely. It is feared that all the an imals on Holiapart will die, as the snow is 18 inches deep. The Small Po.x is raging in some localities. .The citizens of Eugene City had a party at the Court House in that place a few day since and contributed tho handsonm sum of 1100 for the Sanitary Fund. Good. Times. This is a sail mistake. The $.",00 dollars was given to a Methodist Preacher, and not to the Sanitary Fund. We doubt w bother the citizens f this place have patriotism enough to contrib ute one hundred dollars t so good a cause. Tho steamer Sierra Novnd.i sailed last p veiling fur San Francisco, tin Victoria. Timet .'. The steamer Sonora, by her last arrival at San Francisco, brought about 2,500 firkins of eastern butter. A fine story this: the Pacific States importing butter from the east. bully for the farmers and dairy men of Oregon and Califnri.ia. , Every man who wishes well to our country, will rejoice to leurn that Gen Butler has been sent back to New Orleans. Ho has proved himself the right man in the right place, and until there is a worse secession hole to tame, New Orleans is tho place for " Old lion Duller." Duller is to the lories what liarey is to horses, only, horses can appreciate kind treatment and tories can't. We are having a most delightful win ter thus far. It is now llio 5th day of February and we have not had one particle of snow in this part of the Willamette Valley, and but little 011 the adjacent mountains. There has been but two days this season, and they were in Novem ber, that there was ice sufficient for skating, and then the ice was so tender th. t it wus really dan gerous to run on it. Will our Atlantic friends, thoso who are conipeled to " hole up" for from five to seven mouths in each year think of this 1 you who hardly dare poke your nose out of doors lest it should bo blown off' by a Norweslor, think of us in Oregon enjoying the comforts of a miid climate, and then if you prefer to stay there and freeze, upon your own heads be the consequences. Capt. II., of Scottsburg will receive our thanks for his kind regards fir us. The notice was mislaid or it would have appeared last week. Gold is quoted by tho Richmond pa- pcrsat i,25. That's "skukum." Mil. John Hiuuon, of this county, is authorized to receive subscriptions for the Statu Kei'I Iimcan, in Oregon, and Washington Terri tory. Our old friend Air. Lovejoy, has prcsei.ted i s with a beautiful specinie of mixed argentiferous and golcna ore, taken from a lode in the immediate vicinity of Galena. Thu silver and lead in this speciiium, whicA weighs several ounces appear almost in a virgin state, with but a very slight accoinpaliiauieiit of other substance. J he lode that yields sueli ore must have millions of w ealth in its bounds. SucA ore can ho smel ted without much expense or trouble, the lead furnishes uu ample (1 ix for tho silver. II Wioc Hints. A fatal accident happened on Coast Fork, in this county, on the 23 J of last month, (January). While Mr. Keys and his two sous wcro chopping some ti 1 ber the smaller Loy, eight years old, cut off' a limb from a log, when j the log turning suddenly over, caught tho little fellow, crushed him down breaking his neck which caused instant death. A friend of the family has furnished the following lines which we publish by request, Souring aloft on Hngd's wings, Through uiuiiiticuut lavs of heavenly lijjM, He's bade udicu lo miililv things Anil unguis guide Ina la-uvcnlv liiglit. And when yon die you'll mount the sky And meet your boy iu heuven. Coast Fork, Oregon. 0. LATEST EASTERN HEWS, Tho Marysviile Apeal has dates to the 22.1, coiitaiuii'g rumors ol Durnsido having crossed the river, and a great battle ft night, also that Hooker was wounded. Lieut. Cushini;, with 25 men captured Fort Caswell (N C) attlieiioin! nf the bayonet, the rebels being ignorant of his force. He captured a larg amount of stores, &&, but the rebels skedaddled. New York, Jan. 2:J. The Times' letter from headqunrtors Army of the Potomac, Tuesday evening, 20th, says that the right and h it wings of the army aro iu motion. Wetdiall endeavor to cross the river ten miles above Falmouth. All oparalion below us aro merely to deceive the enemy. One corps of infantry is to proceed down the river, wading across at several places. Should any emergency arise. Maj. Snulding and Magruer aro to construct pontoons above. Ono train of pontoons is to be hold in reserve directly opposite Fredricksburg. . Tlw Into great victory iu tho west has had nn exkilei.itiiij; effect on the army. The Worlds letter, same date, says Hooker mid Franklin moved to-day at 1 o'clock; their men are marih iug in heavy order, with tents, knapsacks, and blankets. They took the road towards Hart ford Church, which is directly north east of the I'nitcd Slates Ford. General Sigel moved at 4 r, m. in l lie same direction. Tho Tribune's tetter confirm the above and adds we aro impatiently and anxiously waiting the arrival of pontoons. The exciting nml hazardous effort of building tho bridges will be assisted by tho crossing of large number of men in boats! nfier the plan w hich prove so success, ful at Fredricksgurge. Since writing the above. we learn that the head of the bridge train has arrived within half a mile of tho river. Should fortune smile favorably cn our iindci taking, during the next twelve hours we hope to have driven the enemy lielore us, and have gamed the rear ol Frcdricksburg. Washington, Jan.
