The Bcaatiea of Tobacco, P AS OLD FRIEND AND LOVER OW THE WEED. Having an idle hour, I propose turning my idleness to ome account, by calling the attention of your reader to this very delicious weed, called tobacco. This exceedingly useful, neat and gen teel herb, in a native of America. It was orig inally called bv the Indians, pelum ; but the Spaniards named it tobacco, from tobayo, an is land in the West Indies, where it was found in creat abundance. Being deeply impressed with its value and importance to individual comtort and health, and iU indispensableness to a gen tleman who would commend himself to the fa vorable regard of the ladies. 1 feel that I can not do a better service than to point out some of its advantages, by way of commending it to the favorable embrace of all ages, of both sexes. I trust they will not deem me visionary ia ihio for I not only speak from a long personal expe rience, but I have the testimony of its worth from poets and philosopher of note in ages past. More than a hundred years ago, a noble bard, inspired by the influence of t. bacco, sung its praises in the following very pathetic strain : "Poison that cures, a rapor that affords " Content more solid than the smile of lords; Rest to the weary, to the hnngry food ; The last kind refuge of th. wis. and good. It is a remark frequently made, that there are but two animals in all the world, allowed by na tute to use it, via: man and the tobacco worm. "Ana this true. All other animals are pre vented, by "ll instmci given mem vj ... tor from enjoying the distinguished privilege of eating this incomparable weed. Man, however, has improved upon the practice of the tobacco worm. Rnd curried the luxury to a much greater extent ; for he not only eats, but snuffs and smokes it. This is owing to the fact that he is endowed 1 t.l .u. ..n. .mini, lino- attribute ot rtaton. sun iiib " o . , . a- an advantage denied the worm, or it would snuft and smoke it too at least if it mouth was larga unough for a smoke pipe, and its nose ca pacious enough for a respectable dust hole. In speaking of its advantages, I must be brief. Its eotidusivneea to health; the quietness and steidineiM it give to the nerves, while under its innVierto though they may weaken and tremble after that influence has pas-cd away. B it an I other o iiil, another smoke, or another snulT, at d .. .. . . . . i. :.. l... .1... - I ... till will be set to rignis again, uui mu renurr undoubtedly understands (his as well as I can ti ll him. Idiot, the physician, or some of your smoking, chewing, spitting and snei zing patrons, of both sexes, who have hud, like myself, a long experience in this business, ciin inform him. But, seriously, among the more prominent nd vantages by which tobacco is recommended, I shall confine myself to tho following: First, it is exquisitely le.isunt to the taste. Oue tan hardly imagine th delieiousness of tobacco, es pecially one not accustomed to its use (aud th.it delieiousness is never entirely lost, even to those most adicted to it.) This is undoubtedly owing to the ingredients mixed with the original leaf in its tnauuiacture, such us copperas, ne groes' toe nails, scrapings from his heel in press ing it down, and when added to the scavingers DroDortion from hen roosts iiikI hog pens, must render it unsurpassed in tweelnem and delicacy. In the second place, it contributes very much to the outward appearance, it is true Hint a very distinguished man once said that a "cigar was a Ions twist of tobacco in tho form of a pig's tail, with fire at one end and a fool sucking at the other. But who does not know that great men sometimes say very foolish things of which the above remark is an instance. U is true that a cigar is a long twist of tobacco, in the form of a pig's tail ; it is also true, when in use, it has fire at one end, (and so has a pipe;) but who does not know that so far from being a fool, he is a wis man who smokes the other end to his entire satisfaction. Aud what contributes more to the finish of a gentleman, or sooner elevates the boy of eiyht years old, to a man of lorty, than a twist of tobacco, or an Irish pipe in ones mouth the smoke exhaling and rising in beauti ful wreaths Or what is more becoming than to have one side of tho face swelled out to the size of a pullet's egg, with a quitll Or the jaws in perpetual motion, by grinding it, the juice hang ing like jewels at the corner ot the mouth, out of winch spurts, now a'i0 men, a stream oi uuiii, such as no other animal has the distinguished honor of spurliui; ! The reader must be f.illy aware of all this, especially some small boys in this community, who take pmle in availing themsehes of these, advantages, by a free use of tobacco. I will not, therefore, enlarge. Tobacco is also an excellent cosim-lic. A per son smells exceedingly agreeable when highly perfumed wilh this delectable weed. Not even that noted spotted gentlemen, of four legs, (long denominated as an essence peddler,) sends forth a sweeter fragrance on the balmy air. When chewed, it gives an excellent odor to tiio breath scarcely equalled by the raven that feeds upon the txcresseiico f" the slaughter house. Tin- young lady who condescends to entertain a young man, enjoys a peculiar Ueliulit while inlialuig I lie sweet perfumes that emanate from his clothes and lungs saturated with I he juice aid odor ol this delii'ioiu weed. And should ho venture so funis to steal a kiss from his l.uly love a thing not altogether obsoiclu she estimates it doubly precious when scaled wilh the sweet smelling savor of tobacco. Let no young man, then, when ho contemplates seeking such interesting society endeaveor to conceal the use of the weed by the cosmetics of art, as though he were ashamed of" tho practice; for it will send forth its odor in spite of his efforts, and his charmer will delight in its fragrance. Aud more than this, she will know of liis coming by his smell, and have am ple time to prepare for his reception unless she should mistake him for the above four legged potted gentleman. Space forbids that I should name other advan tages flowing from a use of tobacco. I will only say to your patrons that a new year has just commenced an excellent time to review the past, and turn over a new leaf tor the future ; and if they heed the contents of this article, not ac cording to the teller but according to tho spirit, they will sing their resolutions in the following hymn, prepared expressly foi their comfort : Farewell tobacco, I mean it no joke. No more will I chew thee, snutl thee or smoke ; re harbored thy foulness quite lonj enough No more will I touch thee, thou foulest of stuff. Two dollars a pound to par is no shock. To Mulhollun snd lllanding, famous snd Lock. For a weed so (liracetiil, nauseous and foul ; liegoue from uiy pK-ket, no n:outh and mv jowl. The rebels need not suppose that their government, simply because it is "in a fix ;" is a fixed fact. The Charleston Afrrrnry s.iys "the Yankees love the niifir." The complexion of a largo portion of the servile population ot the South is a pretty strong indication that the chiv alry "love the nigger." Scene in an omnibus rat woman with fat baby : "Must get iu !" French gentleman, "Impossible, M id one ! (to tho driver) you full." "You're a foolyour-elf. Squeeze in there." Panama Xewa ;reat Fire. Dates from Panama are to the 1st of January On the 2tUh December a very disastrous fire oc curred. It broke out in the store of Lansburg it Branden. Everything on r rout street, and in its rear, extendinif from tho entrance of tho city trt th middle of the what f w s consumed. The loss is estimated at 1 135,000. The principal stiflerer are Messrs. Call. Field, Cowan, Lans burg & Branden, and the Panama IJailroadCom pauv. The Bishop of Panama was under arrest, for allowin" funeral service, in the Cathedral for Jules Abolardo, the late leader of the Conscrva live party. On the'2-I Iof Decemlwrthe military mutinied and marched under arms in a body to the Gov ernment house, demanding their pay, whiehwsv nearly one month overdue. The Government managed to borrow the necessary amount, and the soldier returned to duty. Witv is th irtw Tke a pig? lx.auit makes a sty naH. ' j Calivohnia Senator. For the benefit ot I those of our readers who do not know the char- acter aud antecedents of - the three leading can didates for tho office of United States Senator from California, we copy the following extract j from an editorial in HWe'i Exceltior Weekly : I Tho three leading candidates are well known. Plu lp has served tour years iu the State Senate, and served acceptably, as hi present position testifies, lie is not a brilliant man, but enu liently practical, possessing a large share of sound common sense, good judgment, anil is re liable as a man and a politician. He is of the Republican school of politics, a warm supporter of the present Administration, and in favor ot prosecuting I he war to a succssful termination. John Couuess has for years been oue of the leading politicians of the State. He was a firm friend of the late Senator Broderick, aud, of course, is a representative of the Northern or ai ti chivalry wing of the late lJeiiioe.rutic party. Ho supported tho Union party last year and now stands on the same plattoriii as the rival candidates. His Unionism is unquestionable, and ho is bitterly opposed to by the anti-war Democrats, as tho most zealous of t:e Simon pure Republicans. Ho is a tiiiiu of decided abil ity, an able debater, well versed in State aud National politics, but is deficient in that ripe scholarship we would wish tho man to possess who aspires to represent California in the United Slates Senate. A. A. Sargent is a young but risiugiian. He cannot have been eligible to the Senate more than three or four years, and if elected, will probably be the youngest man in that illustrious body. We knew him in '50 when ho was a boy iu appearance, and we did m.t then expect, at this early day, to chronicle tho fact of his being a leading candidate for this exulted office. Ho went to Nevada and entered upon the business uf mining, but though ho took kindly to the pick aud shovel, while the neces sityr existed. he laid these useful implements asido at tho first good opportunity, aud went into tho rii.ting office of tho Nevada Journal. It soon appeared that he could furnish ideas as well as set them up, and the journey man printer was soon installed in the editor's chair. Wo do not record this as his first rise iu the world, but he was then in a position to test his ability. His career as editor was stormy but successful, being occasionally challenged to fight a duel, w hich gentle invitations he invariably declined througu conscientious scruples, -ilia physical courage is beyond question. We have seen In iit watch his q poiieut's hand while it played wilh tho butt -of a pistol, and his coolness was refreshing. As a speaker ho is clear, forcible, but not eloquent. lie argues logically, except when ho g es out of his way to indulge iu hi proclivity for sarcasm, an unfortuuuto habit that has made linn many hitter enemies. Ho joined the Kcpubli can party in '50, when there was small inducement tor an ambitious politician to identify himself wilh the avowed opponents of if slavery extension, aud has clung to its lortunuf through all its vicissitudes. Ho has a clear, active, restless mind ; a remarkably retentive memory, is severely industrious and honorably ambitious.
