Why is it that we have no direct trade with Seottsbnrg ? That is by far the nearest and best shipping port fur t's. Ii y the way of tho Elk Creek trail it is only OS miles from Eugene to where oecan vssels unlade, and with the exception of four miles, it is a good natural wagon 10a1'. Tho Eugeno City trade naturally and legitimately belongs to Sottsburg. The road is direct from ScottsLurg by Eugene tmd the Mclvonzie route to John Day's and Powder Rivers, making thirty per cent, the shortest, and fi'ty per cent, the best road for hauling goods, beside a saving of some TOO miles of ocean service. Freight can be landed in Scottsburg for eight dollars per ton, against $12 to 15 at Portland. If our merchants and traders will take this matter into hand, by the opening of the spring trade we might be pre par. ed to supply the mines, and defy competition. Will some of our capitalists move in this thing? We hope they will. Os the 23th of November the livery stable ofS. cc 1. Durbin, in Salem, was burned down. Tho only assiiitance possible for the citizens to rond ;r was to get the carriages, horses and other moveables out of tho stable, nil of which were saved, and to save tho adjoining houses. The blacksmith shop occupied by D. II. llayden, was also consumed. Loss between four and five thousand dollars. So says the Statesman. Administrator's Notice. I.I.
