Serious Accident. On tho evening of the d
inst., in Gimp Creek Valley, E. B. Hai ben was
'aceidentttlly shot by a Mr. CUrke, and died in a
fow Lours after.recelviiig the wound. Herben,
and a man by the name of Richey, were in an
oats field watching for deer to come iu. Clarke
xsame up on the outside of the fence, for the same
purpose, and seeing Ilerben indistinctly, and not
knowing that any person was in the field, fired
at him under the impression that he was a deer.
It is unfortt that hunters are not more care
ful.
Returned. Rev. E. P. Henderson, late of
'California, and fcrmerlrly President of Columbia
College and a resident of this place, has returned
with his family. Having tried California, he pre
sjre to make his home ia tfce pleasant Valley of tho
Willamette. Had he remained in charge of the
institution which ho conducted with complete
a iccess for two or three years, it would probably
still oe in a flourishing condition.
New Express. Mr. Joseph Meador, lute
Sheriff of Line county, contemplates starting an
express, if on going out tho condition of things
seem to justify it, between this place and John
Day's river, by way of tho McKenzie road. He
thinks tho trip can be made between Eugene
and John Day's river in four days, or less time,
thus giving the miners later news than they can
obtain trom any other point in the Valley. If
the enterprise is successful it will do much to
start travel on the road, and as the entire Valley
and the counties South will then depend on this
route for latest news from these mines, it will be
of considerable benefit to Eugene, and should be
patronized and encouraged by her citizens.
We promised our readers something further
this week on the McKenzie road. Nothing has
been received on tho subject.
From tho Lewiston Golden Age, we learn
that an dirty otcured in a drinking saloon in
that place on tho 28th ult. between William
Kirby, late ol Yreka, and John Maples (known
us Shorty") of Oswego N. Y. but more re
cently from Mnrysville, Cal. The affray resulted
iu tho uVath of Maples. Kirby is held to an
tswer to the crime of 'murder in the first degree.
All but ten of tho California State Prison
convicts, who recently seceded, have been recap
tured. Protection of Immigrants. Wo are inform
by Mr. Ilutihins, the Indian Agont that three
xmp:inies of Oregon Cavalry have been sent
from Walla Walla to ihe Salmon falls of Snake
river for the purposo of affording pratection to
the immigration via Fort Hall and Fort Boise.

Golden Age.
The first number of the Golden Age, a new
paper published semi-weekly at Lewiston, W.
T., by Mr. A. S. Gould, editor and proprietor
came to hand this week. It is to be devoted to
the iiyttrests of that section of country and to
procuring the latest news from the mines,
nnd is therefore independent in politics, but is
sound on the Union. , M Long may it wave."

speaks for itself, was written by the Dean of the Faculty
of the Philadelphia College of Medicine to the editors of
the Pacific Medical and Surgical Journal, San Francisco
for publication :

To the Editors of the Pacific Medical Journal Gentle
men : My attention has been called to an article in the
December number of ronr iournul, in regard to the ad
euenduin decree granted by the Philadelphia College of
the degree was made to the Faculty, it was accompanied by
affidavits and testimonials to the effect that Dr. Czapkay,
was a regular graduate M. 1). of the University of 1'esth,
had served as a surgeon in the Hungarian army, and was
a regular practitioner of medicine. On tho strength of
these the degrees were granted. The ad euendum degree,
as its name implies, is conferred on graduates only, and
gives us new privileges. Had there been the slightest
suspicion ot irregularity, the application would have been
refused. Uy inserting this in your journal you will do an
act of justice to the college, and confer a favor on,
