These cicumstnnccs give the republican a commanding position and superior advantages possessed by but few journals in the Stato. Educational. Miss Boiso opened a select school in the District School House last Monday. About eighty scholars are in regular attendance. All who are interested seem to be well satisfied with the services of the teacher, and the school promises fair to bo'otio of the most useful i.nd successful that Eugene has ever had. Seveiial of our citizens have lately returned from Salmon. Some speak well of the mines, .while other, who were less fortunate in " ma king a ruse," are of tho opinion that this is a batter place to make money than Salmon. -- Wk notice almost daily companies of men ond pack animals passing through town on their way to the Northern mines, and occasionally see a few weary wander, rs returning from that region. . .- Tim body of M-.Purcn, the man who was drowned in the Willamette river two miles above this place on thu 4th, was found on last Wednesday, on a bar in the river a short dis tance below w here the accident occurred. Wk call special attention to the road meeting to be lie I J at tho Court House to-day On last Wednesday there was a drove of about six hundred mutton sheep, passed through this place, bound for Powder river, by way of the Melvcnzie wagon road.
