That venerable individual known as the " oldest inhabitant," has no rccol. lection of the water ever being so high as at the present. The stores on the north side of Main street are submerged to the second story, nnd parties who had piled their goods on the topmost shelves are heavy losers. The total damage sus tained thus far is certainly not less than $100,. 000, and the end is not yet. Cascades Railroad. From the officers of the steamer Hassaloe, we learn that the freshet has played sad havoc with the Cascades Railroad. This whole of tho upper part of the road has .been washed away, and great fears are entertain'd jor the bridges. For the present all travel over the road is suspended, and it will require many thousand dollars to repair tho damages. Salmon River. Accounts from Salmon river continue favorable. A gentleman who has been but a few weeks in the mines, writes to his part ner in the Dalles that he has taken up a claim that yields e I to the bucket. It is supposed that there are from seven hun. r'ed to a thousand persons in the Powder river country the greater portion of them engaged in prospecting. Not more than twenty claims were fairly opened, and the average yield of these was all the way from 10 to 25 per day to the hand. With a proper supply of water, our in. formant is of opinion, that claims can be found for ten thousand men. A Nsw Cocutt. The people living on Fow- rW rlnr hava nrrrnnizprl new county, which they propose to name Baker county, in honor of our late Senator. On the day of the election, they elected a County Judge, and all the officers necessary to put the county machinery in opera tion. At the meeting of the Legislature appli cation will be made to that body to legalize the action of the people. Baker county has now a population of over twelve hundred the number required by the Constitution and there can be little doubt but that the new county will be re cognized. J. M. Kirkpatrick was chosen to rep resent the county in the next Legislature, and no doubt will prove an efficient RprMeotatire. A correspondent of the Oregon Stattiman says : Any person having friend in Powder river can reach them by nddressing their letters to Walla Walla, " care of Barrett's Express to Powder river." This express is carried every week, running from Powder river to the mines, and Mr. Barrett has names of most of the miners on his list. Tin Indian have recently been committing outrages on Humboldt Bay, killing and robbing. The citizens are out of patience that the military authorities do not prove more vigilent to guard against those red devils.
